Injections - Panama Canal Cruise

 Share

Recommended Posts

We have done six full transits of the Panama Canal, and before the first one I checked with the travel specialist at our clinic. He didn't feel there was any need for any specific injection, but the OP should check with their own primary care physician. But on every CC roll call for these cruises there has been someone concerned about yellow fever.

CDC recommendations:

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/cruise_ship/panama?s_cid=ncezid-dgmq-travel-single-001

I'd start there and follow up with your physician, and if possible a travel specialist. While the CDC has firm recommendations for most travelers, and others for some, no one but your physician can answer this question based on the information provided. No one knows your age, your hepatitis B status, whether or not you've had a liver transplant, or any of the dozens of health conditions that would make you at greater risk for Yellow Fever or malaria and might change your individual risk calculation.

None are required by the countries you will be visiting.

Of course the CDC has recommendations, but those are not requirements and most of the recommendations made sense for having even if you do not travel away from your home city.

Fish Lover - I am not looking for medical advice per se as I do not have any heath issues, I just wanted a general idea of what people have done in the past when they've been on a Panama Canal cruise - luckily most people seem to get that:o

There are very few countries or cruise lines that REQUIRE vaccinations or innoculations (yellow fever is one of the major exception in South Africa and many other countries). That doesn't mean that you shouldn't make your own decisions based on discussions with your doctor and public health recommendations....based on YOUR medical conditions and perhaps on what excursions you plan to take. If someone decides not to get a yellow fever shot when visiting the amazon....and you decide to follow their decision...don't blame anyone but yourself if you get yellow fever. Ditto on Tetanus, Typhoid, malaria pills, etc.....if any of those diseases hit you....what everyone else did has little meaning.

FishLover had the right answer....

I have to reply as I want to defend myself but this will be the last one in this vein. I do make my own decisions and if I were to get a disease I wouldn't blame anybody else - I'm an adult who doesn't need telling off! These are social boards for people to share their experiences on a wide range of topics. Subjects vary from tipping to meal choices, injections to joining private tours as in people giving their opinions in a positive way. There is no need for the tone of your answer.

We're spending 2 months in Panama this coming winter, and stay current with most vaccinations as a normal health regimen. We get annual flu, 5 yr pnemonia, hep A, dpt booster, etc. Nothing special for Panama, and we'll bring a DEET based spray JIC.

But check with your doctor for your particular needs.
