Current Open Hotels in San Juan

Just received cancellation for early January at Sheraton Old San Juan - I do not know if this is in response to my letter after they cancelled my pre-cruise stay there in December, or if it is now expanding into January. Just and FYi

According to the FEMA website they are arranging transport for eligible people to hotels on the continental US. There is no link from FEMA to that list of hotels in SJ and I strongly suspect this is more "fake news" So please do take care before acting on it!

Interesting ... I was kind of surprised to see El Convento on that list. We have a reservation with them for March and that's a pretty pricey hotel for FEMA to be paying for! Happy to have my tax dollars going to help people in need, but I do question them using hotels at the higher end of the price scale :eek:

Sheraton Old San Juan just confirmed to me in writing that they are canceling reservations INTO January now. Just An FYI. I do not know how far into the month as ours were early (6-8)

 

I don’t know about El Convento being false or not....but nothing is surprising me. There are a finite number of properties that can actually house people at this time......I did read on a thread this week someone who actually stayed there post cruise, commenting that there were a number of Federal (I think Coast Guard) staying there as well......

We have just received cancellation for January 12th - one night pre-paid pre-cruise stay at the Verdanza Hotel booked through Hotels.com

Our December 2nd Comfort Inn Condado reservation was cancelled. They didn't notify me and it still showed on my Choice Hotels account as reserved. I called (for the 4th time) to confirm the reservation and that's when they told me.

They cancelled my 11/10/17 reservation too. I found out yesterday after I checked with them for the third time in as many weeks. We finally went with an Airbnb.

It's not fake news. Approval of Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) is finally a reality for thousands, including the 3304 Puerto Ricans who may now be able to leave emergency shelters after over a month in limbo.

 

David Begnaud of CBS News reported on this on Monday:

A couple other comments related to this:

 

- while TSA hotel rooms are intended to be very short term, it can go on for months...TSA for Texans affected by Hurricane Harvey is now eligible to be extended to Nov 27th...that's more than three months in hotels for some folks

 

- as part of this announcement, FEMA has also said they will be paying to transport Puerto Ricans to the continental US to access TSA hotel rooms...which potentially means less availability for cruisers on the limited number of flights leaving San Juan, which are already running at capacity

I doubt they're paying the same rate that leisure guest would be paying. I've seen a couple articles about the FEMA reimbursement rate being $167/night.

We’re on the Adventure now. We stayed at the Comfort Inn but they developed a water and generator issues while we were there. I’m not surprised they’re canceling reservations. People on our cruise have reported staying at:

 

Casablanca

Olive Boutique

Casa Sol

La Concha

And various airbnbs

That was likely a post by me. We were on the Celebrity Summit re-positioning cruise from Bayonne to San Juan, arriving on October 28th. We spent three nights at the Hotel El Convento and flew out of San Juan as planned yesterday. Given what so many people are dealing with regarding hotel reservations, I will be forever grateful to the El Convento for honoring our reservations.

 

But we did appear to be the only tourists actually staying there. The bulk of the folks we saw were Coast Guard personnel in their uniforms, about ten electricians and some local families with young children. We did talk to one guy who we thought might be in OSJ on business and he turned out to be a US Postal Service person as they are still trying to get emergency post offices opened.

Because of your booking being honored, we canceled Sheraton Old San Juan before they canceled us! We just booked El Convento. Two night in late March. It is pricey with a high local tax etc. that is ok. it is our contribution to the hurting economy of San Juan PR

Probably not, but a small hotel can’t afford to let rooms at the rates a large chain can afford and still stay in business.

Those of you who have had your reservations suddenly cancelled have my complete sympathy but please don't be mislead into believing that some poor, homeless local has "grabbed" your room. Whatever the reason for the cancellation, that is not it!

To counter any such claims I just posted a new thread "FEMA will not be using SJ hotels for TSA applicants" in which I quote the real facts as published in yesterday's "The San Juan Daily Star" including the following advice from FEMA to eligible locals "FEMA will be providing transportation to select locations in the Continental United States, where you will be connected with support services and lodging."

 

There are no hotels in SJ participating in the TSA program and you can confirm this for yourself using the link given in the article www.femaevachotels.com/index.php.

FEMA and the government has indeed leased the many of the hotels through the end of 2017, hence the cancellations!!

 

FEMA is using those hotels but not for those who have been displaced. The hotels are being used by FEMA works, government workers, contract workers, military etc. who are down in Puerto Rico helping with the recovery of the area.

What you are talking about his something very different. There is indeed only one hotel in Puerto Rico for those locals who are eligible to participate in the TSA program. Isn't a good thing as if you have a job, you need to remain in PR and not be on the mainland.

Not sure why the San Juan Daily Star published this link www.femaevachotels.com/index.php, but it is not tied to the official FEMA website that the US Government is having those requesting assistance use to apply for benefits and see available properties? We just got cancelled again for Dec 1st. This time by the San Juan Marriott Resort & Casino. I did just book a hotel through booking.com after speaking with the Hotel first. It's the Casa del Caribe Inn located at 57 Caribe Street, Condado 00907............spoke to Omar at the Hotel and after he received the reservation from booking he called me. He also mentioned that there are restaurants open in that area. Not the Ritz, but they are operating on generators and have running water.

I just got off the phone with Marriott Stellaris yesterday and they said my reservation on November 25th was still good. What the heck? Why did they cancel your booking for December 1st? Did they give you a reason?

just got a call from the hotel fairy ( manager) at the vanderbilt who said they had a room for us on the 17th of nov. its more than i would normally spend but beggars cant be choosers. we are now booked.

I got another cancellation and the hotel we booked has no phone service. I sent an email and never got a reply. That made me nervous thus the reason I went with airbnb.

I just got off the phone with Marriott Stellaris yesterday and they said my reservation on November 25th was still good. What the heck? Why did they cancel your booking for December 1st? Did they give you a reason?

 

 

After being cancelled by another Hotel I saw an opportunity to book the Marriott Stellaris, and at that point in time the rate was reasonable. Anyway I called the Hotel and they told me that they would be open for tourists come November 1st. About a week ago I called the main Marriott reservations number and they told me that date had been pushed to December 1st which was my arrival date. Two days ago I called the Hotel direct and talked to one of the managers named Ruben. I just wanted to know where I was on the priority list considering all the hotels are filled with Fema, the US Army and locals. I actually felt pretty good after the conversation, but when I went on to their website this morning to check my reservation I saw that it was cancelled. I did not bother to call the hotel seeing it was time to move forward and look for another alternative.

San Juan Airport Hotel cancelled our pre cruise reservation for Nov 23-26...plus our after cruise reservation for Dec 3-4...noticed hold on credit card was gone a few days ago and today received email stating cancellation...
