I am posting from my room at the El Convento. We checked in at 2:30 PM with no issues; their check-in time is 3 PM.

 

El Convento has power (they appear to be generating their own) and water. Air conditioning in our room is great. Both of their restaurants are open their normal hours. The Internet is fast. Hotel itself is lovely -- a wonderful boutique hotel which is one of the Historic Hotels of America.

So glad to hear that! We aren’t sailing until March but I have been looking forward to staying at El Convento almost as much as my cruise. I did a tour of the hotel a few years ago with my sister, who was a TA at the time, and I loved it.

Found this on the Embassy Suites hotel & casino Facebook page, dated October 27:

 

"Embassy Suites Hotel & Casino San Juan Hi Jamie, the Hotel is open and running with limited services, however now we are focused on accommodating the immediate needs of the recovery efforts, so we do not have suites to offer until December 31, 2017."

Instead of cancelling, I was able to rearrange flights on Southwest at "no cost". Instead of flying day before, we are now driving from Jersey to catch flight in Long island to change planes in Baltimore to get to San Juan. "No cost" except my sanity.

Glad to see your post on Hotel EL Convento, we are checking in this week. Would love to know what restaurants around the hotel are open, we really like the little restaurant across the street Rosa de Triana.

 

 

The El Convento room they use for their cheese and wine reception overlooks the Rosa de Triana. We sat at the long table looking toward the Rosa de Triana, and there were no lights in any of the windows on that block. So no lights in the windows of the Triana. The building beside the Triana has been badly damaged.

 

This afternoon we took a walk, and the shop at the corner of that block was trying to operate with no power (just natural light through the open door).

 

Last night we had dinner in the El Convento's patio restaurant. Tonight we will try their Spanish restaurant. During our afternoon walk we saw very little open near the El Convento in terms of restaurants.

Sheraton Old San Juan cancelled our reservations today. Non personalized, canned letter. Claimed it was due to hurricane damage. I think that is what really pushed my buttons most - Sheraton is housing responders and FEMA - it’s not because of damage, so why lie....

Anyway, it was for mid-December, and again in January. They did not even specify which reservation they were cancelling.

I do not believe this hotel situation is going to improve anytime soon.

San Juan is really NOT ready for tourism past (at best) port stops. It is not ready for tourists to stay there. JMHO

Wow! There canned letter is a lie as you stated.

We have reservations there for end of March. I am calling my friend who made those revs,refundable, and cancel. I would rather stay in a locally owned small hotel instead. If tourists are not staying by end of March they are in big trouble.

I got the same deal from Embassy Suites when they called me and cancelled last week. I pressed her 3 times before she admitted they were in fact open and operating but using the rooms for fema workers and such. I had already called a week before and was straight up told they were closed until december 15th for any leisure travelers, but it was annoying that they're implying I cannot stay there because of damage to the hotel.

She further annoyed me by saying that I can call 800-HILTONS and they would book me in another hilton property. I'd already called and was told there were no rooms available in any San Juan area hilton property.

 

I'm very empathetic to the situation in PR, but the way some businesses are handling it is not good. (It may be better in the long run for the local hotels who will lose business to people who would previously only have stayed at big name chains.)

eek gads! Double Tree cancelled 12/1-12/3 but it is still on-line booking thru third parties. I sent them an email asking why they cancelled me if they are accepting reservations for the dates I had reserved/prepaid. I did get a prompt response from their main office and they are investigating. Oh, the rate for the rooms is more than doubled. HMM...something fishy here. I did see that they were FEMA approved. We were also booked at the Sheraton for 12/17-12/19. They did notify me of the cancellation last week. Hubby is concerned that we will be encountering angry and hungry PR folks and it may not be safe to stay there. He prefer we leave the day of the cruise.and I feel we can show our support by spending dollars there. The discussion goes on....

We’re on the Adventure now and people on our cruise stayed at Casa Sol and raved about how good it was.

 

We are booked at Casa Sol for November 24-26. We are not too worried about our reservation, as they have solar panels and are actually sharing electricity with the neighbors and storing their refrigerated food. There are also reviews from people who have stayed there since Maria. TripAdvisor lists it as the #1 B&B in San Juan. Unfortunately, it only has 5 rooms. But their we site shows some availability in the upcoming weeks.

Not good to hear, we have Doubletree reserved for Nov 23 - 25th pre-cruise, I talked to them last week and they confirmed the reservation, this is our 4th reservation after being cancelled by Caribe Hilton, Embassy Suites and Intercontinental.

Our TA called them directly for us during the fires here, and they assured him we would not be cancelled. The letter I received today started with ‘Dear Guest’....no reservation number, nothing personal. I responded and called them our on their reason provided.....no response back.

 

Booking at the smaller properties is the direction we will go in San Juan in the future as well after this. We generally do that anyway, but chose Sheraton purely based on location to ship. That didn’t work out so well.

Today the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, along with La Fortaleza de PR and FEMA, announced that temporary accommodation assistance is available to Puerto Rico residents who can't return to their homes because they were displaced as a result Of hurricanes Irma and Maria. This is one of several short-term housing options that are being offered to cover the demand for safe housing after storms.

 

Temporary Accommodation Assistance (TSA) allows eligible applicants to stay in a hotel or motel for a limited time, such as a bridge to medium and long-term housing. FEMA pays all costs and taxes for the rooms directly to the participating hotels and motels.

Comfort inn in Condado area cancelled our November 10th reservation. Not sure they would have let me know this soon if I hadn’t checked with them today. I went ahead and obtained accommodations through Airbnb.

We confirmed our reservation for 11/16-11/18 with Embassy Suites on Sunday. They cancelled on Tuesday.

We rebooked at San Juan Airport hotel on Tuesday. They cancelled today. Now looking for another hotel for our pre cruise stay.

According to the FEMA website they are arranging transport for eligible people to hotels on the continental US. There is no link from FEMA to that list of hotels in SJ and I strongly suspect this is more "fake news" So please do take care before acting on it!

Drilling thru the FEMA website for assistance goes to the map in the previous post that lists those hotels in San Juan as available for transitional housing. The list is real. It also lists hotels in the continental US. It may be that many will opt for hotels in the continental US over the ones in San Juan, it has been reported that many are leaving, but the San Juan hotels listed are available for transitional housing.

 

It is not fake that hotel reservations have been and are being canceled whether a hotel is on the list or not.
