Hotel in Anchorage prior to land tour?

Looking for hotel recommendation for one night prior to Royal Caribbean precruise 3nt Denali land tour in early July. Not sure which hotel the land tour uses in Anchorage. Would be easiest to just stay there, but not a deal breaker. Would like to be within walking distance of some restaurants. Not sure what we will be doing yet (activity wise) prior to the land tour. Will be 3 adults and 2 kids (13 and 10). Thanks for any advice!

www.anchorage.net without a car, you'd likely want the downtown area. It's pretty much all walking distance.. Depends what type of lodging and budget??? Multiple possibilities.

Thanks for the link to the site. I'll check it out. We won't have a car. We typically stay at Marriott/Hilton family of hotels. We're not staying at Four Seasons level hotel. Hilton Anchorage is showing up around $300 and really don't want to spend that much. Marriott Downtown has no availability,

I stayed at the Anchorage Westward Hilton for two nights last August...I managed to get a nice room for about $200/per night. That hotel is in a great downtown location, and if you are taking the train, you can actually walk a block and a half from the hotel downhill to the station.

I stayed there back in 1991, when I took an escorted Princess land and sea tour....it still is used by many of the cruise lines, and is a very nice one. We had our 'Welcome Dinner" with our tour guide up in their roof-top restaurant. Very nice!

There is an Embassy Suites (Hilton) in midtown Anchorage. With five of you that might be the most cost effective in one of their two bedroom suites, and it includes breakfast. It isn't in downtown but there are multiple restaurants nearby and a Walmart for supplies.

Depends upon what you would like to do in the downtown area and how much time you have. The Anchorage Museum is probably tops in my opinion and the closest to it is the Sheraton. We stayed in the Sheraton a week ago on New Year’s Eve, I was impressed, and much of it has recently been renovated. The four big “high rise” hotels downtown though are quite expensive in the summer and difficult to book. If you are mainly interested in a nice room with places to shop and decent eateries I would look toward the Dimond Center Hotel, if you aren't interested in shopping then one of those in what we now call "Hotel Row" in Midtown (There are about a dozen name hotels on or close to C Street between Tudor and International Roads) is going to be pretty good and this area is also interspersed with decent eateries.

Living in the Anchorage area, I always use the Hilton when staying in town. They give great service, and we always enjoy our time there. Highly recommended.

Plus, it's just across the street from the hard Rock Cafe, one of my favorites. Right there by everything else, too.

We stayed at the Voyager Inn - good location downtown.

When I had to go to Anchorage on business I frequently stayed at the Voyager. Unless something has changed recently it was sold to the Captain Cook. So now the Voyager serves a hot breakfast in the mornings, and also have wine and beer in the early evenings. And Voyager guests can use the fitness facility and business center at the Captain Cook.

I stayed at the Captain Cook June 2017 and found it very nice with several restaurants on site.

I found this hotel very nice also. Service, exceptional. I liked the nautical theme.

I think it would make sense for the OP to stay at the hotel that RCCL uses. Does anyone know which hotel they use?

Thanks for all of the info. I do believe RC stays at Downtown Marriott which was over $350 for the night. Captain Cook was well over $300 as well. Would rather spend a little less on the one night hotel and spend more money on the excursions since they're all expensive!

Right now we're booked at Quality Suites for about $175 and that includes breakfast, wifi, and airport transfer. Looks like it's decent enough for the night and in a pretty good location. Will be arriving around lunchtime the day before we need to meet up with RC for the land tour.

I'm assuming you are not going to be on a RCI cruise tour but merely a pre cruise type shore excursion for three nights. If it were a cruise tour then the hotel in Anchorage is part of the package; you would need to get the cruise line to add another night for you if you want to arrive early. Most cruise tours are escorted. Multiple night shore excursions however do not provide an accompanying guide, accept that most of the various modes of transportation associated with the tour do have guides offering travel narratives.

However, since it is not a cruise tour, most probably it is some sort of package shore excursion that you are booking through RCI. A pre cruise beginning in Anchorage, going to Denali and terminating in Seward in time for disembarkation on a cruise, is pretty common.

The way those usually work is that a choice of hotel in Anchorage is pretty much up to your pick from a selection of hotels they work with, if you want one they don't then they just eliminate the hotel from the itinerary. The tour package does base their initial price on a given hotel. For instance, the cruise packages listed in the link below uses the Quality Suites in downtown Anchorage, also acceptable is the Fairfield Inn in Midtown for the same price and slightly more is the Lakefront near the airport and Spring Hill Suites near the university.

Transfer from the airport to the hotel and the transfer from the hotel to the railroad station is dependent upon the hotel's shuttle service. The high rises downtown don't offer shuttles so this tour company doesn't work with those establishments, hence the hotel portion is removed from the itinerary, you are on your own if you want to book those.

I think you made a pretty good choice here. You are very close to the museum. Also you are only two blocks from Nordstrom which is interconnected with skybridges to the 5th Avenue Mall and J.C. Penney. Big food court in the Mall. A lot of high end eateries down there too. Our favorite is Ginger, directly across 6th avenue from Penney, try their oyster shooters, ask for Alaska yearlings. Right close by on 6th is maybe the best steaks in all of Alaska at the Club Paris. In the museum is the Muse restaurant. They offer lunch and dinner. I go down periodically from our home in midtown just to have lunch at the Muse. Try their seafood chowder. Hope you enjoy your cruise and Alaska.
