JuliaMS Posted January 18, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2018 What would a Government shutdown mean for cruise departures and arrivals? Lots of government agencies involved in getting a cruise ship and it's passengers in and out.
jamesr3939 Posted January 18, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2018 CBP is considered mission critical so they will be working same with TSA.
hannibal54 Posted January 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2018 I never thought about it, I guess I will find out next week on the Brilliance.

Ashland Posted January 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 18, 2018 Perhaps longer lines.
Flymia Posted January 18, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 18, 2018 Maybe longer lines, but that is it. The government does not fully shut down. CBP, TSA, FBI, TSA, are all working etc.. There will be "essential" employees at every single agency. The employees just might not be paid on-time.
Rare markeb Posted January 19, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2018 If memory serves, back in 2013, the definition of "essential" didn't include "adequate for planned workload". Too many posts on Cruise Critic, but it seems there was a very minimum number of CBP officers at the ports of entry. That's been a while, and my memory could be wrong. And, as stated, they're working with no guarantee they'll be paid on time.
Rare geoherb Posted January 19, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2018 On the news tonight, they mentioned that people who are waiting for passports may have their travel plans endangered if there is a shutdown and it goes on for a few weeks. Passport processors have never been declared essential. We have an acquaintance who was a senior staffer on a Congressman's staff during a shutdown in the 1990s. He tells the story of a rant by another Congressman during a committee meeting when he couldn't get a passport issued during the shutdown - and he had voted for it! SevenSeas1492 Posted January 20, 2018 #10 Share Posted January 20, 2018 We were on a Pacific coastal cruise during the last shutdown. Noticed no disruptions at all in the ports except for the closure of Alcatraz since it is a National Park.
capriccio Posted January 20, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 20, 2018 . All agencies have money in reserve to cover a shutdown. That is not how government fund accounting works.
Rare markeb Posted January 20, 2018 #12 Share Posted January 20, 2018 There will be very little disruption to any services. This president is not as vindictive as the last one, who shut down everything to hurt us. All agencies have money in reserve to cover a shutdown. Uh, no. Some agencies or departments may have multi-year appropriations, and some may have non-appropriated funds through fee-based services, etc. Previous administrations (not just the most recent) have interpreted the law to prohibit expenditure of any appropriated funds in the absence of either an appropriation or a continuing resolution (which allows the "continuance" of expenditures at the previously appropriated levels). So, sorry, this is a well established precedent through administrations going back to probably Carter, if not earlier.

HaraldOslo Posted January 20, 2018 #14 Share Posted January 20, 2018 It might affect cruisers coming from abroad. I remember quite a long wait getting into the US on MIA and after the cruise
BlueHerons Posted January 20, 2018 #15 Share Posted January 20, 2018 With fewer employees working at the port, those who have booked tight flight times may be in trouble.
