Smoking is such a nuisance on cruise ships

If someone is sick for weeks because of an occasional wiff of smoke outside, they should never leave their home under any circumstance. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

If smoke has that effect on people maybe people shouldn't smoke "under any circumstance".  We accommodate peanut allergies.  Why not smoke allergies?

I had lunch over the weekend and one of the managers came over to talk.  I could tell he had been smoking.  It was not pleasant.

You're not following the thread if you think I'm saying that poster said that.

Been following just fine and you are the only one who said anything about being sick for weeks.

Some people have health reasons for not wanting to be around smoke and others, like me, just don't like the smell.  I was a smoker for 16 years and until I stopped I didn't know how much I stunk after having a cigarette and now can't stand the smell of it, especially if someone who just smoked sits near me in a restaurant or is in an elevator with me.  Thankfully, on land and sea, there are only certain places people can smoke.

If you think I said that poster's wife was sick for weeks either you're mistaken about following along or your reading comprehension needs some serious work. Good day to you.

I agree. Indoor smoking is just sheerly disgusting and should be banned, frankly.

At least we can probably agree on this.  But we don't agree about whether outdoor smoking should be allowed.

I dont see the problem with outdoor smoking, usually as in most cruises theres always some breeze or outright wind to take the smoke out. I dont smoke so yeah, a full no smoking policy would be cool for me but I think poor smokers should get a place to enjoy their killing vice.

I guess the problem is on cold days when smokers have to go outside.  They cant use casino unless they are playing.  Maybe you could sit in front of a slot machine and pretend to play.

There should be a designated outdoor smoking area on the decks where the casinos are, in addition to the designated smoking areas on the other decks.  I believe the industry (at least in the US) is going to go to a total non-smoking indoors policy very soon.  This has been done and works in the hotel/resort industry, no reason why it shouldn't be instituted at sea as well for safety and health reasons.

I just read this article about Carnival updating their policy.

The comments are even more entertaining than the article.

There are already several cruise lines with no smoking indoors: Celebrity, Azamara and P&O are three that i have sailed on. I am a smoker and I enjoy my time in the casino as well. Non-smoking casinos are fine by me (it gives me a nudge to get out of the casino when I want a smoke). Azamara are probably the most restrictive - one small smoking area on deck 9 and that is all. (They are also removing the casinos from their ships as well).

My ideal would for there to be an indoor smoking room (cigar bar) as well as some outdoor places. When the decks are closed due to weather, and there are only outdoor smoking areas allowed, this is when you may get a few smokers sneaking a crafty one on their balcony. I do not condone the rule-breaking BTW but the rules need to be properly thought through.

Just read a review of, I believe it was the Bliss, where a guy spends half the review talking about smoking and how inconvenient it was on the ship.  I don't smoke, never have.  I find it disgusting and don't like to be around it BUT I am kind of a live and let live person.  If it is not in my face then do what makes you happy.  I think there should be a designated smoking area on the ship but it should be in a enclosed room with proper ventilation so it doesn't stink up the ship or perhaps outside at the very back of the ship.  I do think a lot of smokers are petty and most of us non-smokers don't give a rip if you are inconvenienced because you smoke.  To me it would be like me ranting and raving for 1/2 of a ship review because they don't have my favorite beer on board or the in room slippers were a size smaller than I would have liked, etc.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents of experience. We enjoy our balcony on our cruises. Our neighbor lit up on his balcony, guess we are too quiet for him to have noticed( On the Allure OS #14644 in July). I quickly and quietly opened our balcony door and got our steward to catch the perpetrator. He caught our neighbor in the act and just said hello. Steward told us there was nothing he could do. Was it because our neighbor did not have prepaid gratuities or that RCL only pays lip service to its policies. Tell me, does the CC 'meet and greet 'have separate smoker  and nonsmoker soirees ?

The room steward probably isn't the best person/most authoritative person for that situation. It would be like asking a dishwasher to break up a fight between guests.

Like I said. I am spoiled by living in a state and community that makes it almost impossible for me to encounter second-hand smoke in my daily life.

Indeed, we are very lucky in  NY that we have the restrictions in place. I too enjoy it.

They should have never gotten rid of the smoking/cigar lounges. Most are just unused rooms now specially on carnival or they are getting rid of the lounges entirely and moving in more staterooms. Poorly designed layout didn't help as you would have to walk through them much like the casino to get to spaces on other side.  People smoke and will bend the rules if necessary such as smoking on balcony when options are limited. I'll have a few cigars on a cruise(on the rear deck outside where it's still allowed,) reminiscent of the gilded years of transatlantic travel. It's not about smoking, but the people I meet and converse with even though a nice stogie and scotch in hand are a plus. Back when there were cigar lounges and men could discuss topics of the day and network. Things have obviously become soft and touchy-feely.  I think I'm due for a QE2 experience.

On QM2 our suite was a couple of doors from the cigar lounge. I worried because my lungs stop working if I breathe in smoke.

With the door to the lounge closed, not one bit of smoke escaped.

I see no reason smokers can’t be accommodated like that. Several lounges on different decks could be made available.

Empirical evidence with statistical significance indicates NCL would make more money if they banned smokers,  ncl should do some studies/trials to determine if the program would  increase revenue.  If they adopted such a strategy because of evidence then anyone caught smoking should be kicked off the ship at the next port.  I would not be surprised if the study indicated over a 93% reductory therefore concluding it would be in the best interest of ncl corp to BAN smokers from their ships

speaking as a FORMER smoker... I would think that logic would dictate that if there is such a persistent problem with so many smokers on these ships, then it wouldn't be in the cruise lines interest to ban it completely. they would certainly lose a significant number of customers.  I know that when I was a smoker I would definitely research if a cruise or even a hotel had some kind of accommodation for smoking.  If not, I would look elsewhere.  I know thats not "empirical" evidence, just logic.  Now that I am a non-smoker it doesn't bother me if someone is smoking nearby (within the rules).  And, I am sympathetic to the pervasive and difficult addiction.
