Hi..first time sailing out of Rome and need help. What is the best or most economical way to and from the port going to the airport? Also, is there enough time if the ship is docking at 5:00 am and we are looking at a flight that departs at 10:00 am? Thanks..Jay

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

If you come over to the Italy board, located here:

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/8-europe/

you will see this topic discussed daily. A 10am flight is very tight, particularly one going direct to the US. Security is tight and slow. 10:30 is the typical earliest recommended flight time.

To make a 10:30 flight you must arrange private transport. You will not make it on the train, as you need to go to Rome and connect.

As others have mentioned, docking at 5am doesn't mean getting off at 5:05. Another option is what we did...take a full day private tour of Rome ending at the Airport Hilton, and catch that early flight the next day.

"Best" and "economical" are entirely different animals.

Best, IMHO, would be a private transfer - expensive.

Most economical would be the train - we have utilized this option in the past. You would need to be able to manage your own luggage & also make a change/connection in Rome. This is not overly difficult and if you are budget conscious, this option may be worth consideration.

Have you checked you roll call? Perhaps you can find a shared transfer.

As others have stated, a 10:30 flight is way too tight (and impossible if you decide on train). Anything after 1pm should be fine.

Agree with Bruce that a 10am flight out of FCO is a bit tight....but normally doable.  But you need to give your disembarkation  some thought.  You would normally want to be at FCO around 3 hours before your flight and should allow for about an hour to get from the port to FCO.  This means leaving the port around 7:00 to 7:15.  Our advice would be to use express disembarkation where you walk-off with all your luggage.  As far as transfers our personal recommendation is to book a private transfer with one of the reputable companies.....our choice always being RomeCabs.com.  With RomeCabs and others, you can lower the cost by getting a few others to join your transfer (we prefer to do our transfers with 6 although 8 also works).  To find others, simply post on your CC Roll Call board (specific to your cruise) and this will normally get you a few others with the same time issues.  Before you agree to accept others you might want to ask if they have any issues using Express Disembarkation.  Early plans can quickly get foiled if one party has to look around for their luggage (assuming it is even off the ship).

Hank

P.S.  The train is out of the question for such an early flight.
