hbr777 Posted January 14, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2019 ...into town? Or, I guess another way of asking is, "How far is town from where we would dock? Can we actually stroll into town?" I would be on Amawaterways. Vilshofen Passau Linz (jumping off point for bus tours to Cesky Krumlove, or Salzburg) Weissenkirchen Vienna Bratislava Budapest Thanks for your advice! ReaderGirl57 Posted January 14, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 14, 2019 (edited) We went with AmaWaterways and we were able to walk into town in every port except Vienna, where AMA provided a shuttle to the city center. Vilshofen Passau Linz (jumping off point for bus tours to Cesky Krumlove, or Salzburg) Weissenkirchen Vienna Bratislava Budapest Thanks for your advice! I can answer for a couple of ports...... Vilshofen Passau - right in town. Linz (jumping off point for bus tours to Cesky Krumlove, or Salzburg) Weissenkirchen Vienna - nowhere near the town. Need a shuttle or we caught a train in. Bratislava - been past it but didn't stop. Looked like it was right in town. Budapest - right in town. But depending on your cruise line, will depend where you dock. We cruised on Viking and they had three different pontoons to dock at. They are all "in town", some just a little longer a walk.
Rare notamermaid Posted January 15, 2019 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2019 Vienna: this seems to say to me that Amawaterways uses the Nussdorf dock. It is a suburb connected with the city centre by tram and train. The tram ride is pleasant but in the evening, for your safety, I recommend relying on the shuttle provided by the company. notamermaid
Rare mskaufman Posted January 15, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 15, 2019 Passau and Budapest, right in town. In Vienna we had about a 10 minute walk to the subway. Of course, if there are low water levels again, that changes things.
Rare Roz Posted January 15, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 15, 2019 In Bratislava you walk across some train tracks and you're there. Vienna is the only port that's not close. When I and 2 other passengers wanted to visit a museum after our schedule tour, the Uniworld front desk staff called a taxi for us. I'm sure AMA would do the same. dogs4fun Posted January 15, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 15, 2019 Below is where we docked: Vilshofen - docked in town Passau - docked in town Linz (docked in town, across from the Ars Electronica Center - we walked to the train station & took the train to Salzburg) Vienna - docked in Nussdorf - took tram D into the city (about a 30 minute ride to reach Opera on the Ringstrasse) Bratislava - docked in town Budapest - docked in town (next to Elisabeth bridge)
Netta7 Posted January 16, 2019 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2019 In Passau the Crystal Mozart was too large to park right in town and we were at the farther dock. It was a 5 minute bus ride to the place the other ships were docked in town. I don’t know if this varies with river conditions or it is always this way for the Mozart. hbr777 Posted January 18, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted January 18, 2019 Thank you everyone! Wow! Vienna I was so sure we would be docked IN town. Everything else I sort of guessed!
Floridiana Posted January 19, 2019 #11 Share Posted January 19, 2019 Downtown Vienna is not on the Danube, only the suburbs are.
Rare Coral Posted January 19, 2019 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2019 Also realize that if there are low levels - you maybe bused. For example - we were bused to Bratislava.
petsgalore Posted January 20, 2019 #13 Share Posted January 20, 2019 Vienna depends on where you dock. If you are in Nussdorf, yes it will be a bit more complicated and take about 30 minutes. If you are near Mexikoplatz/U1 Metrostop Vorgartenstraße a lot less (approx. 10 minute metro ride) and it is very straight forward to get to Stephansplatz.
