newbiecruiser25 Posted February 9, 2019 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2019 (edited) Does Norwegian Gem offer biodegradable straws for drinks or do we have to bring our own? Edited February 9, 2019 by newbiecruiser25
NYcruzzer Posted February 9, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2019 Not sure about the Gem.. However on my recent cruise on the Escape paper straws were served with frozen drinks and were available upon request for other beverages.
Rare Kmkub Posted February 9, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2019 Just off the Jade and we had nothing but paper straws. It made me happy. I hope it's fleet wide.
zqvol Posted February 9, 2019 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2019 They should give them with any frozen drink. On other drinks you will likely have to ask, and probably won't like them because they are really tall or is long the right word?

Junes Posted February 9, 2019 #6 Share Posted February 9, 2019 I just found compostable straws on Amazon that work and feel more like plastic. I'm not a fan of paper straws, so I will be bringing a box of these!

Tossing them in the bin is just like tossing a regular plastic straw. They will not break down in a landfill or in a home compost due to the heat necessary. So unless you plan to keep your used straws and bring them to such a facility, you're wasting your money and not making any difference when it comes to waste production.

One lady pulled a giant bag out of her carry-on and was handing some out to others.
david_sobe Posted February 10, 2019 #10 Share Posted February 10, 2019 I had my first paper straw yesterday at a restaurant in West Palm Beach. It was fine but after 4 refills of iced tea the top got a little soggy but it still worked. Its my understanding that NCL uses paper straws on their ships. Rare Newleno Posted February 10, 2019 #11 Share Posted February 10, 2019 All my chocolate milks on the getaway a few weeks ago came with plastic straws attached.
Kelly1195 Posted February 19, 2019 #12 Share Posted February 19, 2019 Just off the Getaway. I wasn't aware NCL had stopped providing straws. When I ordered a Miami Vice I asked for a straw but was told there were none available....I was not offered paper but didn't specifically ask so I am unsure if paper straws are available. I didn't have any problems without straws and will take a metal straw on my next cruise. Upon reflection, I do find it interesting that the cruise line had no issues with selling packages of plastic water bottles at a steep profit. Plastic water bottles are recycled, whereas plastic straws end up in landfills, because of their size they pretty much make recycling impossible. barb65 Posted February 19, 2019 #14 Share Posted February 19, 2019 (edited) I bought stainless steel straws (the wider ones) on Amazon and they work great! Edited February 19, 2019 by barb65

I am going to do the same at home now. A small contribution but one nonetheless. Bottles can be recycled.....if they make it into the proper place of disposal. Reviewing research will demonstrate just how much eligible plastic goes to landfills not to be recycled. Again, research about straws led to info about plastic bottles and have changed my ways. myjillian Posted March 13, 2019 #19 Share Posted March 13, 2019 Just bought 50 Flamingo straws on e-bay for under $5.00 and that is free shipping. I plan on handing them out on my next cruise if people tell me how cute my straw is and where did I get it 😍
