Sailed on Norway? Not "to" but "on".

Has anyone sailed on the old liner Norway.  She had an explosion in the Tampa port and is now resting on a reef in he middle of the Atlantic.  Anyone?

Yes in 1994 out of Miami but the boiler explosion took place at the port of Miami and then she was not sunk but beached and broken up on the beaches of Alang, India.

She was our first cruise.  I loved the Norway and had a fantastic time on her.  Too bad she went the way she did.

My family of 4 was booked to sail on the Norway February 1993...our first cruise. We had booked our air with NCL out of Albany, changing planes in Baltimore the day of the cruise (we were newbies!). We got stranded in Baltimore due to snow and missed the ship. But NCL said, "we have another ship going out tomorrow, would you like that one?" I didn't care where the ship went, just get me some sun!! ( and NCL covered our hotel and meals that night!) So they put us on the NCL Dreamward sailing the next day...it was later stretched and re-named the Dream. They didn't have any cabins for 4 left so they gave us 2 cabins for 2 each...yay!. On the way home more snowstorms...we left Miami on Sunday, I walked in my front door Tuesday! 7 airports later!!

Even after 30 cruises I still wish I had gotten to sail on the Norway!

My whole family (17 of us) sailed on her in the mid to late 90s. Beautiful ship. I’m sure with 8 little ones, todays mega ships would have been our choice, but we had a wonderful time.

That is so sad. She was our first cruise ship in 1993. Absolutely amazing ship. The largest cruise ship sailing at the time. We had a oceanview junior suite with 3 picture windows. Got us hooked. The chocoholic buffet was out of this world and the midnight buffet was photo worthy.  Sigh...

We sailed on the SS Norway twice - both times in the same cabin.  What a wonderful old ship...our favorite.  No bells and whistles-- a throwback to a different time. It was a shame how she came to the end of her sailing days.

We sailed on the SS Norway on our honeymoon, the week of August 3,1991 in the western Caribbean. 27 years later, we sailed last week on the Joy to Alaska. Had a GREAT time! I think we’re NCL customers again. 

 

On a side note, we weren’t credited for or first sailing because they had no record of it. 😜

She was my first cruise ever...I found her to be just ok...now our cruise to Norway on the NCL Jade...that was an amazing ship and itinerary!

Sailed on the S/S Norway in 1998. Loved that ship. Loved the nightclub with the windows that looked into the bottom of the swimming pool. 

 

I sadly followed her demise after the 2003 boiler explosion in Miami and ultimate scrapping in Alang a few years later. 

 

FYI - The tip of Norway's bow is on display at Paris Yacht Marina.

Yes and I had the worst cabin ever!  This was in the 90's and I had read that they had spent millions restoring the ship.  I had assumed that it also meant the cabins but come to find out that it was only the common areas.  My cabin was probably on deck 2  as every time we reached a port the damn anchor would wake us up.  It did have a little port hole and I do remember that it was a volley ball cruise as there were a lot of professional volley ball players.

I don’t know if they still do this, but I got credit for sailing on the Norway by sending them a picture of myself (and my then wife) on the ship showing some part of the ship identifying it as the SS Norway.  But, that was several years ago.

 

It was a “no frills” experience compared to NCL ships today.  I think during the day, we just hung out at the pool and hit golf balls off the end of the ship.  They did have some singing and dancing shows, but nothing remotely as good as you see on today’s ships.  I think we played some bingo (which wasn’t our idea of a great time as we were both in our 20s at the time).  The casino was the highlight, as we both won money.

 

We had an inside cabin, and when someone was getting dressed, the other person had to sit on the bed to be out of the way.  Since it was our honeymoon, we really didn’t care, though.

 

Can’t remember all the ports, but I do remember St Thomas, and wondering if we could stay there and not re-board the ship to go home.

Sailed on the Norway three times in our early cruising lives. Beautiful, classic ship. Agree the cabins were nothing fancy, but that was true for most ships back then. We were twice in the same inside with bunk beds, forward on the ship. On port days they would lower the vessels they used as tenders, what a horrible noise. Since we often were in the nightclub very late, it certainly woke us up. We were a lot younger back then and just laughed it off.

Maybe it changed later, but in the early 80’s we saw full production shows of My Fair Lady and I believe Fiddler on the Roof.

I sailed on the S.S. Norway in 1992 with my family.  Dad booked Viking Deck Room 139 (largest suite on the ship - had a dining room table that sat 12 people).  It had a master bedroom with a canopy bed.

 

Please see attached scans from that cruise.  My personal photos of the ship were lost in a move, years ago.

 

The midnight buffet was spectacular... with ice carvings galore!

Would have loved those shows.  I remember the shows we saw as being relatively generic singing dancing.  They were good.  Just not something recognizable (at least not by 20-somethings) at the time.

 

I also remember being able to walk front to back on the ship in a relatively short period of time compared to today's mega ships.  The furnishings were quite opulent to us, however.
