It depends on the cruise line, but typically 30 days or so prior to sailing.  You should provide more detail regarding your cruise line to elicit the best responses.

On HAL we can print our e-docs and luggage tags 50 days out from the cruise.  We get an e-mail from HAL at that time.

Carnival, you can print them at anytime. Have printed out tags for a cruise a year from this September already.

You can always save your ink and get them from the porters at the pier.

Would I be correct in thinking it's like the difference between printing my baggage tags for a flight at home and getting them at the airport?  At the airport they're much sturdier and user-friendlier.

I think so. They both work well, but when throwing away some old dive bags last week I found luggage tags from 8 years aog still on them, and we got those at the pier. I don't think one we printed would have lasted that long.

It can be anywhere from 30 to 90 days before cruise. Princess has them 75 days before cruise. The way they fold makes them pretty strong but many cover them with clear packing tape or luggage tags holders made especially for that purpose.

At least for RCI, if you print them, there is other info to help them get the luggage sorted and delivered.
