Does anyone know if you booked through Costco Travel does it process through Costco or Carnival?

My problem is that Costco doesn't take AMEX for payment.

Can you we use this to pay gratuities and buy a drink package directly on the Carnival website?

Unless the charge comes through to Amex as "Carnival Cruise Line Reservation" (or something very similar), it will not be eligible for the credit. The gratuities "may" qualify but they would have to be at least $500; the drink package I believe comes through as a "Fun Shop" charge and won't qualify. I'm sure others will correct me if I'm off in the weeds but my experience says otherwise.

I booked the reservation on Amex and it says CARNIVAL CRUISE LINEMIAMI FL on my statement. I booked the drink package on another card and it says CARNIVAL - THE FUN SHOP MIAMI FL. I have no idea if Amex will give you the credit with a non-reservation purchase, but just wanted to share how it shows on my credit cards.

Can this be used on anything other than the cruise itself (I am already fully paid)? I was hoping maybe it could be used for excursions since you are making a "reservation" for it. Long shot I know, but just wondering if anyone has had success doing that before.

I doubt it would apply to excursions. IIRC, the excursions booked online are shown as "excursions" on your credit card in which case, they would not qualify.

How often does AMEX usually offer this? My final payment is due May 7th so I am wondering if there is a chance I'll see another promo like this once this one has ended or is it highly unlikely and I should just pay off my balance now with a 10% off gift card deal at my local grocery store.

If I recall, it has been made available twice a year for the last 2-3 years: once early in the year then another later in the year (Fall time frame). But like with the financial markets, past performance is not an indicator of future performance. 🙂

Thanks I appreciate it, that is helpful to know.

  • 8 months later...

I have been checking daily, finally found it this morning.  I received a nice casino offer on Princess two days ago, but we were out of town yesterday, so luckily I had just put a hold on it.  Perfect timing!  There is also a Celebrity offer ($125 off $500) that I can use, and an NCL offer ($150 off $500) which I won’t use. This is the first time I have seen three different offers at the same time.

I was NOT going to book any more cruises till everything settled down. I had already canceled my Feb 2021 cruise months ago. I was holding on to my Sept 2021 cruise but still ready to cancel if things did not seem stable. ... THEN I see this offer. Had discussion with Hubby about the strong potential of prices going up once things go back to some kind of normal.... so I decided to book a cruise using this offer for Feb 2022.... and since I was there I also looked at rates for Sept 2022 and booked one there also using Gift Cards.

You guys are a bad influence. 🙂

But all on fully refundable rates so no loss if I chicken out.

I also looked and saw the Celebrity offer and the NCL offer. I did  not see the one for the Carnival brands at first, but then I found it. I also do not remember having 3 different cruise line offers at the same time.

I know that this is an old post, but an ongoing issue.  How I get past this is book online at Carnival using the American Express card, then transfer the booking to Costco paying with their CitiCard, getting 3% back from that, and the Costco Cash Card as a bonus from Costco.

Nice trick.  How do you do the transfer to Costco, do you call Costco immediately after making the booking with Carnival and give Costco the booking number?

You have 60 days  from the booking to contact Costco to make the transfer. You cannot have the cruise fully paid for when you make the transfer. When you call Costco they will do a three way call with Carnival and the Carnival rep will ask identifying information to insure you have the authority to make the change.  Takes a while but it has been worth it for us.

Have Celebrity and NCL but no Carnival.

On my AMEX offers, the Carnival deal appears as something called "World's Leading Cruise Lines."  You have to look in the fine print to see that this offer (of, for me, 10,000 AMEX points for $500 spend) includes Carnival Cruise line as well as other cruise lines under the Carnival Corporation umbrella.
