techteach Posted March 12, 2022 #2401 Share Posted March 12, 2022 @rakkor It is great to hear you are up out of bed and preparing for a cruise. Don’t try to do too much too fast.
Host Hattie Posted March 12, 2022 Author #2402 Share Posted March 12, 2022 Thanks @Camgirl, he brought a piece home for me and it was very good. Have a lovely trip both, I had my eye on that trip as well as it would have been a nice trip for my birthday but we'll have to make do with Pembrokeshire instead !
Camgirl Posted March 12, 2022 #2403 Share Posted March 12, 2022 That's partially why we are going 😀. We will be away on my birthday 😊. I hope you have a lovely day for yours, where ever you are.
navybankerteacher Posted March 13, 2022 #2404 Share Posted March 13, 2022 Things where I am now are a lot better than things at home (Connecticut) - where yesterday’s snow has been followed by more very cold weather. We have escaped to Sanibel Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida for three weeks (in lieu of this winter’s cruise) sea temperature now 75 F, not a cloud in the sky, and a soft breeze invigorating the 80F air. We expect to drag Spring back north with us in early April.

Host Hattie Posted March 23, 2022 Author #2406 Share Posted March 23, 2022 We're having a lovely time in beautiful weather in Pembrokeshire. A trip to the local heritage centre unearthed this Cunard connection - "Curacao was a Ceres class light cruiser of 4,190 cons launched on May 5th 1917 and completed the following February nine months before the end of the First World War. By 1929 she had been converted into an anti-aircraft cruiser, serving with the Home Fleet in the Norwegian Campaign of 1940 and in the Arctic. The career of Pembroke Dockyard's last fighting ship ended tragically on October 2nd 1942 when she was sliced in half in a collision with the liner Queen Mary, which was carrying over 10,000 American troops to Britain. The cruiser had rendezvoused with the Cunard liner 20 miles off the Bloody Foreland, on the Irish coast, to escort her to Scotland for berthing in the Clyde. But a series of errors led to the collision, which saw the Curacao sink in six minutes with the loss of 338 lives."

Funny you should come up with that; It was at Blauwbaai Beach in Curaçao on 8 January 2006 that we had our only ever swim in the Caribbean. We'd got email of my wife's Mum's death the night before. It wasn't unexpected, she had been in a coma before we left, and we made it home for the funeral. We decided to have a boozy lunch at The Grill King restaurant in honour of my mother in law, and to have brief respite from the "British" food on P&O Arcadia. It was berthed in St Anna Bay, but QM2 was berthed at the Mega Cruise Terminal. Throughout our visit we had constant glimpses of QM2 from taxi coming back from our swim and wandering along the front to the restaurant. We got chatting to a chap at a neighbouring table who said he was the pianist in Queens Grill on QM2, don't recall his name. We have a couple of photos and plan to ask after him when we board QM2 on 29th May (we're not in grills though). So a different Curaçao has a strong link to Cunard for us.
Host Hattie Posted March 23, 2022 Author #2408 Share Posted March 23, 2022 We have visited Curaçao on QM2 but that was on the Christmas 2009 cruise so not at the same time !
bluemarble Posted March 24, 2022 #2409 Share Posted March 24, 2022 I'm a happy camper. I just received my US passport renewal in today's mail. Much sooner than I was expecting it. I requested routine (non-expedited) processing. I had been reading the US State Department's estimates of 8-11 weeks for routine passport processing, not counting the mailing times on both ends. I actually received my new passport 27 days from the date I placed the renewal application in the mail, using 3-day (non-express) priority mail on both ends. Pretty impressive. Glad I didn't pay extra for expedited processing. I've already updated "My Cunard" to supply the new passport details.
Host Hattie Posted March 24, 2022 Author #2410 Share Posted March 24, 2022 Which reminds me, I really need to get on with renewing mine. Although when we have such amazing views here I'm not in a mad rush to travel.

Host Hattie Posted March 24, 2022 Author #2412 Share Posted March 24, 2022 The 3rd photograph is Tenby as well, South Beach looking towards Caldey Island. We have a nice stroll around the town after a pretty disastrous lunch on Tuesday. The top two are near Castlemartin, normally inaccessible during the week at this time of year but the MoD kindly had a day off on Monday. 1
