Aulanis Posted April 16, 2021 #1001 Share Posted April 16, 2021 4 hours ago, Izzywiz said: that is a tricky one and difficult to put in order but here goes... Our list is similar , the order changes now and again I would add Borobudur, Mali with the Mud Monastery and library and the Dogon. Easter Island and the Galapogos. Egypt featured high up in our early lists but dropped down due to the valley of the kings seeming more like a theme park. Huge car park and a small train to get nearer the site . Limited access and extra for the better tombs if iopen. When we first went it felt like we were explorers the last time just tourists.

Izzywiz Posted April 17, 2021 #1004 Share Posted April 17, 2021 'Morning all. I see we have some early risers again! Today we transit the Suez Canal so thank you for the pictures Bee-ess. Tomorrow we reach Israel with the ports of Haifa, Ashdod and Tel Aviv. Aulanis, I quite agree about Egypt. I was absolutely enthralled by the history, culture and the sights when we did a Nile cruise in 2008. It is a shame that you felt that the Valley of the Kings has become so touristy but I would still go back if time allows. I envy your journey to the Galapagos and Easter Island. We should be going in October this year but I can't see the trip taking place. It will be our third cancellation for the same tour. In 2019 it was cancelled 3 days before we left home because the ship had engine problems and, of course, last year it was the pandemic.....oh well...that's life. Now for the Suez Canal...
purplesea Posted April 17, 2021 #1005 Share Posted April 17, 2021 Although I have visited Egypt I don't know where my photos have got to!! We did a mini cruise from Cyprus to Port Said which included visits to the pyramids and the sphinx, Cairo Museum and lunch on the Nile. It is one of the many places on my list of places I want to visit.

Izzywiz Posted April 18, 2021 #1007 Share Posted April 18, 2021 Great pictures of the Suez Canal. We have now reached the Med and have docked in Israel. Our itinerary through the Med is a little different from that of our outward journey as I don't want to repeat ports so tomorrow we reach the ports in Crete. Haifa.... Aulanis Posted April 18, 2021 #1012 Share Posted April 18, 2021 Great - None from me today. Years ago maybe 1970s we did a land tour of Jordan and Israel with the 3 kids so paper pics will be somewhere - think I'll copy yours of the places I remember, they will be better than ours and a lot easier than scanning. - just kidding. Missing tomorrow as well only a few places missing from our Med list -Crete Rhodes Lebanon Corsica and Sardinia which were supposed to be done last year & this. Our airport - hotel taxi driver in Sydney last March was from Lebanon has family and a half share in a taxi business there so he gave us the details if we wanted to contact them. Have only ever found one cruise going to Lebanon & Marella had one that on a 2 week b2b did 3 ports in Corsica/Sardinia that would have been ideal. Izzywiz Posted April 18, 2021 #1013 Share Posted April 18, 2021 I would be very interested in visiting the Lebanon and was looking at a land tour rather than a cruise. We had been in the process of booking a land tour of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan when the Covid problems started but everything is 'up in the air' at the moment so this thread is keeping happy memories alive!☺️
Aulanis Posted April 18, 2021 #1014 Share Posted April 18, 2021 (edited) We went to Armenia & Georgia in 2012 Have over 1000 pics though they are unsorted so quite a few duplicates - different angle- flash or no flash , people appearing from nowhere etc. I am trying to back up my pics on googlephotos but its not without snags. I think it keeps albums by pic number but then the main "store "for want of a better word is in date order. That would not matter but one of my previous cameras did not remember the date when you changed the battery so you suddenly have a batch of pics dated the date the camera was made. Of course it didnt help I often forgot this and didnt reset the date. I also have some where the SD card failed, luckily I was able to recover most as they were not overwritten, but they are all dated the day I did the recovery. 😞 Edited April 18, 2021 by Aulanis
Gettingwarmer Posted April 19, 2021 Author #1015 Share Posted April 19, 2021 Hello again. No early takers for Crete so I'll start with Heraklion, Museum and Knossos
Izzywiz Posted April 19, 2021 #1016 Share Posted April 19, 2021 Hi, Gettingwarmer, glad to have you back on board again and thank you for your pictures of Knossos. We visited there on our first cruise in 1992 but the pictures have disappeared in the mists of time! Tomorrow we continue sailing west along the coast of Africa to Tunisia, Ceuta, Casablanca and Agadir. In 2017 we went on a tour from Heraklion to the Monastery of St. George Sellinari before continuing to the resort of Agios Nikolaos via views of Spinalonga Island
Gettingwarmer Posted April 19, 2021 Author #1017 Share Posted April 19, 2021 I've enjoyed following your travels Izzywiz. Here are some pictures of Chania, Rethymnon and the Souda Bay area.
Dermotsgirl Posted April 19, 2021 #1018 Share Posted April 19, 2021 I enjoyed the pictures of the Holy Land. There used to be a three week cruise on Oceana each December that included this area, and I always liked the sound of it, and thought that I'd do it when I finished working. By the time I had retired the itinerary had disappeared, and even poor old Oceana has now disappeared 😞 We called at Souda Bay on Crete in September 2019 on Azura. It wasn't on the original itinerary, but, due to high winds, the itinerary had to be rejigged. This was a bonus for me, as we were able to visit Chania. I'd seen photos of Chania years before, and liked the look of it
Izzywiz Posted April 20, 2021 #1019 Share Posted April 20, 2021 We reach the North African ports today before heading north west across the Atlantic to the Azores tomorrow. We did a land tour of Tunisia in 2007 and then had a port call in Tunis cancelled several years later. I loved the history and culture of Tunisia and feel so sorry for the ordinary people who are always the ones to suffer when there is political unrest. Just a few pictures from our tour... Gettingwarmer Posted April 20, 2021 Author #1025 Share Posted April 20, 2021 Due to go to Tunis and to see Carthage but the attack on the cruise ship people at the museum meant our stop was cancelled. Visited Casablanca on the SS Uganda on a school cruise and was very intimidated by the locals and have never been again. I have heard Ceuta is nice and is a good change from Gibraltar. looking forward to the Azores tomorrow.
