Britboys Posted March 24, 2021 #801 Share Posted March 24, 2021 I chose the itinerary of my cruise specifically to include both Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay. Comparatively few of these are on offer which, I think, is due to the number of licenses available to the cruise lines. Princess and HAL seem to have the most. We had a 4 night pre-cruise tour in Alaska and boarded Coral Princess in Seward after a day on the train from Denali. Our first 'stop' was at the Hubbard Glacier.
Britboys Posted March 24, 2021 #802 Share Posted March 24, 2021 The next day was spent in Glacier Bay, which actually has National Park status in the USA. Park Rangers boarded to give a commentary and be available for questions. IIRC, the two major glaciers we saw were Margerie and then Johns Hopkins. Apologies if some of my shots are very similar to others already posted. We didn't call at Sitka (our other port was Ketchikan) so I am looking forward to seeing photos of Sitka tomorrow.
Gettingwarmer Posted March 25, 2021 Author #803 Share Posted March 25, 2021 (edited) Today we are tenedered at Sitka. we sail for Los Angeles tonight. We took a wildlife boat trip from the ship. We saw harbour seals, sea otters. eagles and then spotted a humpback whale out to sea. As the waters were so calm we followed it and were then also able to see the stellar sealions out on a rocky island, we then travelled back to the bay to see whales frolocking. We then landed at Sitka in the drizzle to look around the town with its Russian heritage. Edited March 25, 2021 by Gettingwarmer

Aulanis Posted March 25, 2021 #806 Share Posted March 25, 2021 We didnt get to Sitka either, sorry to say I too am leaving the cruise in LA . It has been very enjoyable but I need to get back to other pressing projects now the days are getting a bit longer. Too much travelling & cruising has left the garden a bit (lot) neglected and as a terrible hoarder the garage and loft need attention. Have managed some improvement during lockdown but I am easily distracted. Family have been saying for years they are going to start hiring skips. I used to try and mend Tvs and computers, screens and printers as a hobby. Had quite a lot of success but the parts left over and retained as "essential spares " need reclassifying as recyclable and will have to go to the tip. Doing this cruise has shown me that I need to get an itinerary for all our cruises photograph it and put it as the first picture in the series. I also need to get the paper pictures out of the loft and get them copied. Not sure what for but daughter (40) did ask the other day about a hotel we went to in Russia when they were around 10yo Didnt find our pictures but found it online. There is a good holiday story attached- we were on a fairly cheap 2 centre package holiday. 2 adults and 3 children we often ended up "girls "in one room and "lads" in another. Anyway they showed us two rooms close together and we said that would be fine. They then said or we have another room but the children would have to sleep on couches so DW went off to have a look. She came back and said they have taken our bags there. It was really unexpected as at that time russian hotels (we were in) were a bit basic - this was a suite spread over 2 floors one huge bedroom , marbled bathroom a fitted kitchen and a good size lounge with a Piano! As she said she couldnt refuse it and the kids slept very well on the large comfortable couches. The room is shown on current hotel site. Still a top end suite but lacking the piano and decor. I will leave the spreadsheet with the links to each port visited so far in case anyone wants to find something. The link is in my sgnature. Anyone can add to it. and I might try and catch it up from time to time. Smooth sailing - keep on clicking 🙂 4

Izzywiz Posted March 26, 2021 #810 Share Posted March 26, 2021 I really enjoyed all the pictures of Alaska and was interested to see what Sitka looked like.....the wildlife pictures were excellent! We have been to LA several times over the years, starting in 1991, but have only cruised from there twice. The second time was in 2018 so I'm using my photographs from that trip. We had an overnight stay at the Normandie Hotel and spent our time walking along Wilshire Boulevard before going to the port... Fortunately not Emerald Princess!!!

Britboys Posted March 26, 2021 #813 Share Posted March 26, 2021 Have been to LA several times on land holidays but some time ago so don't think I have any digital photos. Must say that it is not one of my favourite cities as it is pretty soul-less. Looking forward to seeing Hawaii as I should have been there for the first time earlier this year on my worldie sector that obviously got cancelled... Dermotsgirl Posted March 26, 2021 #814 Share Posted March 26, 2021 We went to LA in 1998, so the photos are pre digital. We actually stayed in Anaheim near Disneyland, but we also saw a lot of LA with our hire car and a couple of tours. We didn’t find the driving too bad, as we were used to the M25

Aulanis Posted March 26, 2021 #816 Share Posted March 26, 2021 (edited) Well as there are not many pics on LA I am adding a few of the QM1 and the sail away on Golden from the other dock. We stayed one night as part of the package. Not really impressed as you wil see its a bit dark and I really dont think they are interested in the hotel side of things. There were 3 weddings going on and a lot of the ship was sealed off as private functions. The rooms ( other than ours)shown were also sealed only visible through plastic glass. The cleanest part of the ship seemed to be the engine room 🙂 If anyone is interested the pics are out of a 95 pic album which can be viewed HERE you dont have to wade through one by one there are maybe 8 to a page and you can click on any you want to see enlarged. You may think a lot of funnel pics reason -on a previuos cruise mentioned to a guy from Liverpool we were going on QM1 and he told a story of a relative who had worked on the QM1 funnels and it was like an oven inside so they welded an airpipe onto the funnel and forgot to remove it. It had been painted over and seen a few times since. I took the pics hoping to spot it and sent him the pics but he couldnt see it but it could have been on the funnel that was covered. Izzywiz Posted March 27, 2021 #822 Share Posted March 27, 2021 Great pictures of the Queen Mary. We hired a car in LA in 1991 and visited the QM. In those days, all hire cars were white and being young and naïve, I didn't think to make a note of the registration number or the exact position in the huge car park. It took us over an hour just walking up and down rows of cars ro find it and we only identified the car because i spotted a box of tissues that i had left in the window! I learned a huge lesson that day and now take pictures of our hire car registration numbers and any landmarks to identify where we have parked. I also take photographs of taxi/tour bus numbers too, especially if they are going to return to pick us up later. Now to Honolulu and once again, several visits over the years so I will only post from our most recent ones in 2016 and 2018. We went to Pearl Harbour in 1997 so didn't go back during our subsequent trips but I have enjoyed seeing the very poignant pictures....

Izzywiz Posted March 27, 2021 #824 Share Posted March 27, 2021 My husband found this beach which was close to where the ship docked. Nobody was taking any notice of the sign and he was mesmerised by the surfers...
Dermotsgirl Posted March 27, 2021 #825 Share Posted March 27, 2021 We cruised from Singapore to San Francisco on Aurora in 2017, so I will have some photos to share for this leg of our journey. When we called at Honolulu, we visited Pearl Harbor, something I had always wanted to do
