Go solo or find a friend?

Amazing prices on the 3 night staycations.

Problem is, my friends are all only on one vaccine so struggling to find someone to go with. I don't mind going alone but since there's a single occupancy charge, it hardly seems worth it.

Should I seek a roomshare or keep checking with friends or even just pay more to go solo?

It's less about splashing out and more about whether Id enjoy it.

I'm a bit weird. People think I am super extroverted because I love to "perform" and I am quite a social person but I'm only like that when I warm up to people. I'm shy about new people!

Under “normal” circumstances I’d say go alone…..

But if not currently allowed to freely mix with other passengers and only three nights I’d suggest finding someone to share with who is double vaxxed and doesn’t snore!

I take a little while to get to know new people before I come out of my shell as well.

A couple of years ago I went for a solo cruise down the Norwegian fjords (wife has decided she doesn't like cruises) and loved it. Apparently some of the other passengers thought I was some kind of celebrity as I was keeping myself to myself... No, I had just recently broken my elbow, and wanted some "me time". Bonus was that when I was in the MDR the waiters noticed I only had the use of one hand, and each night without making a fuss, they made sure my meals were brought out pre-cut in bite sizes, yet still looked fantastic. They got a big extra tip.

I'm (hopefully) doing a Northern Europe cruise in December, and that will be solo too. I'm dead excited about it.

I cruise both with cruise buddies and solo. I love both equally. I'm a very sociable person and fairly outgoing so enjoy lots of contact with lots of people when I sail solo. I do however agree with Angel at post #6. Under the current circumstances, I personally wouldn't wish to sail solo.

I am travelling solo for the first time on Britannia - July 29th!

Well done you!  I travel solo a lot and it's so nice to have the choice of mixing and meeting (not really me) or being a miserable git on my own (definitely me).  Either way I'm sure you'll have a great time and make some good memories.  Best wishes.  Jane.x

But that's the beauty of solo cruising.   You can be as socially extroverted as you wish, or not.   I've found myself happily in a large group in the MDR, but also sometimes like ordering a room service pizza and watching a movie.

Well done on booking Britannia solo.

Have an amazing time, I cruise with my mum, but if she didn't want to I would go solo. I'm shy as well, but I would just enjoy being at sea, walking around desk, swimming in the pool, eating yummy food, and unwinding after hectic work!

That's just what I do debs - there is nothing like relaxing, unwinding, having a massage, a lovely swim, dropping off to sleep with the sound of the sea, and eating great food.  Bliss!  Jane.x

What I wouldn’t give to be doing that right now……

Hi @ScratchTheRat, hope you've had a great break. I'd love to know how you got on if you don't mind. I usually cruise solo but am not sure what it will be like at the moment and therefore are undecided whether to book a staycation.

Hi Em!

I had an amazing time! First night I spent the time alone but in the morning I went to the solo cruiser coffee meet and met some amazing friends who we spent the rest of the cruise socialising with 😄

So you were allowed to mix with others.  I thought only those in your own family group.  Perhaps it's improving.

We were told that they couldnt encourage/plan things like dinners or solo tables, but if we wanted to do it on our own there wasnt a problem. Its a case of using your own common sense

P&O's website has been updated with the latest guidence and with the lifting of restrictions, the bit about solo travellers is now a lot more encouraging - you are not discouraged in participating in mutual activities with others on board, so should be much closer to normality in that respect.

This is the exact wording from their webiste:

Solo travellers

Solo travellers will be able to enjoy delicious dining, world-class entertainment and adventures ashore. We know solo travellers love to make friends on board and we’re pleased to say guests travelling alone are welcome to join others for dining and all hosted activities such as workshops, dance classes and shore experiences.
