RNB ask: would you rather be up the creek without a paddle or in a creaky cabin

If I hear creaking, I know I'm on a ship.  Imagine being on a pirate ship or a ship back before there were planes and your ancestors traveled to America on a ship of some sort.  The possibilities are endless.

Tell us all about it! 🙂

Well, I just finished my snorkeling adventure at Grand Turk; only ship in port and only me snorkeling from beach. I was in my standard dark blue and white attire which scared the hell out of some swimmers who thought I was Shamu 😳. When I just returned to the cabin there was no creaky sound; oh I know why, we are not moving.

What has happened, since leaving Port Everglades, there has been the creaky sound in the wall behind the bed. It is like someone breathing in and out, creak, no creak, creak, no creak, etc. The carpenters came by twice and could not fix. Almost impossible to get to sleep. So HAL has offered cabins that all smaller and on a lower deck. I am in cabin 6052 which has a balcony 25% larger and a cabin 15% larger. The ship is less than half full. I thought you get a better cabin when things go wrong. The latest response from Guest Services  is to let us sleep in another cabin that is quite and keep our original cabin.

Any suggestions how to proceed.

Sincerely,

Sleepless in Grand Turks

Where is the sleeping cabin?  Might be good if you have a spat, LOL.

We just had the same problem on the Celebrity Constellation.

We, however, had some strong wind and swells and the ship was rocking. The creaking was expected, not the banging that caused the wall to vibrate.

The cause could not be determined (my theory was that it was obvious that passengers around us had balcony doors wide open and something was banging).

Our desired and booked low, amidships, and inside cabin had already been changed at the pier to a balcony cabin as our cabin was in the block used for crew covid isolation.

We were given a suite  to sleep in and given the option to move permanently. Unfortunately, the suite was on an even higher deck and aft so that the movement was noticeable. It was quiet so that we did have a good night's sleep.

We turned down the move as the banging had stopped the next day and I didn't want to have to pack and move.

All was well until two days later when the neighbor's balcony door was again wide open in windy conditions and the cabin door was allowed to slam with such force that damage was done to the cabinets and mirror in our cabin.

But that is another tale that resulted in wine, chocolates and a $300 FCC because we promptly reported the damage and allowed free access for repairs (I was just happy that Guest Relations didn't assume that the damage was caused by wild monkey sex....)

I am off track and to answer your question, it is up to you to decide if it is worth the trouble of moving.

I seem to recall a somewhat related issue on "Green Acres."

"A paint company offers to put a fresh coat the Douglas' house to take "before and after" photos. As quickly as they apply the paint, the porous wood absorbs it while making a sucking sound. Haney shows Oliver how to close the house's pores using a pore key, but that causes the house to gasp for breath."

I don’t think you have to do anything to proceed.  They’ve offered you a sleeping cabin and you get to keep your larger one for the day time.

I’ve seen that happen before and ironically on a couple of cruises, our tablemates who had the sleeping cabin reported that literally a day after that happened, the annoying sound disappeared.

They kept their sleeping cabin to be safe but actually only spent one night there 😉

And no, you don’t always get a better cabin when things go wrong.  The better cabins may not be available.  The suites could be sold out or they may be spacing passengers for covid’s sake.  Hard to say.

A sleeping cabin works.  I’d go with that, keep the cabin you have to enjoy during the day and use the other one at night.

Thanks Kazu. Just got our new cabin on Deck 5. It has a HUGE balcony, cabin 5145. We will sleep there tonite before making our final decision. For your info, the creak came back once we left GT an hour ago in very calm seas.

Had another miracle happen at sail away. For only the second time in 44 years of cruising in the Caribbean, a whale appeared a quarter mile from the ship.

Life is good!

We had that creaking sound on a trans Atlantic on Koningsdam.  I did complain to GS, but when someone came to listen, there was nothing to be heard.  Of course, it returned again the next night.

The cabins are prefabricated by specialist companies and then fitted to the ships structure.  Ours sounded like the fixings had loosened and it was grinding against the cabin next door.

I have recorded the sound on my iPad along with the calm seas so I will always remember it.

Well folks hear is an update to moving to a new cabin on Deck 5.

Unknown to me before moving was that the cabin had one of those connecting doors to the cabin next to us which is not fully sound proof.

I was fixin to go asleep at about 11 pm when I heard these strange sounds thru the connecting door from the other cabin. All I could make out is that there must been some religious ceremony and all I could hear was the need to get closer to God 😲

We received a sleeping cabin once and it was a downgrade, but I didn't care.  The noise from the kitchen galley above drove me bonkers.  Lesson learned.  Stay away from those areas.  Anyway, I was able to get a good and sound sleep from then on.  And we used the day cabin for the views.  Perfect ending.

We have been on the Koningsdam twice. Both time in a Vista suite and both times we had problems with sound bleeding through the walls from adjoining cabins even though neither one was a connecting cabin. Have never had similar problems on their older ships. If I had to guess I would say that the new builds probably saved weight, money or both by having less substantial separation between cabins. Our experience has led us to avoid the newer ships.

I was so impressed with what was going on next door that I did the couple in the cabin next to me a favor. There is this sign that is put up in the Lincoln Stage Center during the strings performance. Last night I borrowed the sign and put it in front of their cabin door. The sign says, “Quiet Please, Performance in Progress”. 😄

Just a quick report that does not pertain to this thread.

In St Thomas yesterday. Our so called free shore excursion to St Johns Trunk Bay was cancelled so opted to go to Magens Bay; only beach option left. I can’t figure out how this is called the most beautiful beach. It was terrible; 1000 fellow passengers off five cruise ships, had to rent chair and carry on your own unless you pay someone to do it for you. Everything expensive. This is not paradise. If we did have this so called free excursion I usually go to Secret Beach; now that is paradise. Only good thing is that I met a lady at the beach who lives 10 minutes from me and wants to see me will I get back home. Please don’t tell the Misses about this.

Well the Misses found out about my encounter at Megan’s Bay and I was kicked out of the cabin and forced to sleep on the balcony. Did I tell you I had a HUGE balcony; 10 feet wide by 18 feet long. So I took a blanket and a pillow out to the balcony to sleep under the stars. I saw the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, Orion, something called      Sirius XM and the Dolly Parton Constellation, or called something like that. It was huge. 😲 So I fell asleep at about 11 pm. At about 1 am I was woken up by this noise probably two decks above my balcony. It sounded like some navy operation. All I heard was up periscope, down periscope, fire the torpedoes. What was that all about. Well, another sleepless night at sea.

Since I been telling tale of a whale experiences, I need to tell you about a real whale. An hour ago while have breakfast in the Lido a whale appeared off the right side of the boat for five minutes thrashing its tale in the water to makes its prey easier to shallow. Never seen any thing like this in the Caribbean. Must be the chilly waters of the Caribbean attracting so many whales
