Rare Jamman54 Posted October 10, 2022 Author #354 Share Posted October 10, 2022 We decided to skip breakfast today. I went down to the Legends Café for a coffee, and to pick up today’s “Fun Times”…… We are approaching Halifax, Nova Scotia….. The Adventure of the Seas, and some “Dam” ship, have arrived before us…. Because we are the third ship, we are forced to dock in this industrial area….. Because we are docking in an industrial area, we are not allowed to walk on the pier, and have to be shuttled to the cruise piers. Here’s all the information….. Here is our room steward, Kris….. To be continued……

Back in 2010, we did a four-day NYC cruise to Saint John over Labor Day weekend. In all our sailings, we've had three that were storm-impacted - and two of those were Canada cruises. This was one. 2010 was Hurricane Earl (not this year's version). The storm formed on August 22 and eventually became a Category 4 hurricane. As we waited for our cruise, we saw the storm's track forecasted to skirt the U.S. East Coast and head right up the Bay of Fundy over the weekend - right where we were supposed to sail. I was prepared for the cruise to nowhere, but when we arrived for boarding we learned that the plan was to sail ahead of the storm and port in Saint John before the storm hit. When we reached Saint John, they doubled the docking lines and stationed two tugs on the ship's port side to keep her in place - Atlantic Hemlock was one of the tugs. The ship stayed put. Needless to say, we stayed on this ship!

The name comes from sailors who would visit the harbour back when there wasn't electricity everywhere. Halifax had electricity first, Dartmouth didn't - so it was the dark side of the harbour.

I don't know what other possibilities there may be because if I'm in that line I'm usually CRAVING pizza.

Rare Jamman54 Posted October 11, 2022 Author #368 Share Posted October 11, 2022 Our first stop was going to be the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, or the Titanic Cemetery as it is sometimes called. Patti got these shots along the way. The Harbour Hopper is loading up….. We are passing the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. We recommend a visit there, as they do have quite a few Titanic artifacts….. Here are some random shots as we head to the Fairview Lawn Cemetery….. This last shot is part of the Casino Nova Scotia….. Rare Jamman54 Posted October 11, 2022 Author #369 Share Posted October 11, 2022 We go under the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge which goes over to Dartmouth….. We pass the Halifax Shipyard….. We have arrived at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery….. Doug, our guide, points the way. There are several tour groups here at the same time, so quite a few people….. Doug explains that in addition to those from the Titanic that are buried here, there are quite a few who died in the Halifax Explosion in 1917, also buried here…. Here is some Titanic and Fairview Lawn Cemetery information….. To be continued…..
Rare Jamman54 Posted October 11, 2022 Author #370 Share Posted October 11, 2022 This is the Titanic Grave Site….. Doug explains some of the history and stories of some who are buried here…. There are 121 victims of the Titanic buried here. These are some of the graves. In case you didn’t know. The number at the bottom of the head stone was the order that the bodies were recovered from the ocean….. No, this is not the grave of Jack Dawson of the Titanic movie fame. This gentleman actually shoveled coal on the Titanic….. Some of the families purchased more elaborate head stones for their loved ones…. To be continued……
Rare Jamman54 Posted October 11, 2022 Author #371 Share Posted October 11, 2022 For me, this was the saddest story. The 4th body pulled from the water was that of a very young child. For over 100 years the identity of the body was unknown until a DNA test confirmed the identity…… On a side note, they attempted to get the DNA from all the unidentified victims, but except for a few, viable DNA was unable to be obtained. Here is one such person. Really sad….. Here is the grave of one of Titanic’s musicians….. Here are some additional Titanic Grave Site views….. To be continued….. 6

Rare IntrepidFromDC Posted October 12, 2022 #373 Share Posted October 12, 2022 Did you get chills or anything considering you're cruising and visiting Titanic graves? I ask because over the course of the nine years I've been cruising, "Titanic" came up in conversation a handful of times and just one time did I feel creepy about it. I still wonder why "just that time", like maybe a relative of a survivor or victim was on the ship with me?

There are quite a few ports where that is the case! We first found out about the explosion many, many years ago when we visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

When visiting the Titanic grave site, I felt a sadness, thinking of the people literally below my feet. The only other time I felt anything like that was at a Titanic Exhibition in Orlando. They had an actual 20' section of the hull, and when I reached out and touched it, though you weren't supposed too, I was deeply moved.
