Actually it isn't originally American at all, it's European. An ancient Celtic tradition, taken over by Christians, and honours the dead on All Hallows Eve.

 

Americans just commercialised it.

No Les the public holiday wasn't today, it is tomorrow. People do take today off for a long weekend and according to my husband, many must have taken Friday off too, as the trains weren't busy during morning peak.

Hahaha, I had to laugh even though I thought it a tad nasty! I just put a note on the door saying we're not doing it this year, and turn off the doorbell. I feel a bit of a grinch when my daughter reports on the effort some people go to and the loot her brood come home with 😪

Haven't had any kids come to my house for about five or six years.

Actually not many kids live around here. There used to be but they've all grown up and gone away.

A silly American thing like Carnival or Royal Caribbean? If it doesn't hurt you why not let others have their fun.

 

My area does it well, everyone in the neighbourhood gets a sign in their mailbox a week before and if they choose to put it up kids can come and if not kids know not to.

Absolutely correct, Julie.  All Hallows (All Saints) is to honour those saintly souls who do not have a name-day during the year.  These days, in Canberra at least, kids only call at houses that signal it's okay, such as a candle, broomstick, pumpkin, etc. outside the front door.

Here is something for everyone to think on that I got told yesterday.

 

We bring our children up with Stranger Danger and all that it entails - so why then do we encourage them to go knocking on strangers doors to collect lollies!
