Zaandam out of Montreal Hotel and Walking to Port Question

So confused and trying to figure this out. I believe the Zaandam will sail out of the, Montreal Cruise Terminal - Iberville Station, and we are looking at a hotel that google maps says is a 9 minute walk or another is a 3 minute walk to the port. Is the area down by the port safe to walk with luggage and is the port easily accessible to walkers?

When sailing out of Tampa we walked into the port and it worked out really nicely.

I personally only have experience debarking in Montreal at the terminal and getting a cab right outside of the area. But I have been in other parts of Montreal a few times and felt safe especially during the daylight hours. Like any major city there are areas that should tread lightly in after dark but this is not one of them, and on the weekends with cruises coming and going I'm sure there is more security around the entire area. Here is an article on the subject from a few months back. https://www.viahero.com/travel-to-montreal/is-montreal-safe

Montreal native here. Which hotel are you looking at and what time of year? Anything that close is probably going to be in Old Montreal or just on the fringe. Old Montreal is very safe and touristy at any time, particularly in summer, but keep in mind that some roads in Old Montreal are heavily cobblestoned and may be a bit challenging if you are dragging luggage. Easily do-able though.

Not one hundred percent sure on hotel yet. The issue we have is our flight gets in at 10:45 pm so not sure if pays to get a hotel near the airport and get a ride in the morning or get to the hotel by the port at roughly midnight.

we don’t know how long customs takes but guessing it will be a bit. Lots of decisions but it will be comfortable weather when we go.

I would probably also stay at the airport and head in to the port the morning of the sail. You probably wouldn't get to a hotel near the port until midnight. My suggestion would be to stay at the big new(ish) Marriott which is physically attached to the airport terminal, making it easier to get a taxi or Uber to the port the next morning. It's a very nice, conveniently located hotel.

One further thought: When we did a cruise that was to end at Montreal, our small ship (Veendam) was unable to go all the way to Montreal, due to high river level, so we ended at an industrial area downstream.  If that should happen, you, and anyone else arriving in Montreal to board, would need to get transportation to that area.

A good reason to have downloaded the STM system map in advance!

To be fair Veendam, while a lovely ship, really was/isn't that small. Still 57,000 GT. She's small in comparison to most cruise ships today, but typically the older liners that would regularly (and successfully) call on Montreal (vs stopping in Quebec) were around half the size at 22,000 GT like the Saxonia, Carinthia, etc in the 50's. Vistafjord, later Caronia, which we took to Montreal a few times, was also around 25,000 GT. When you get above 50,000 GT its a crapshoot in Montreal.

Good news is, if you do get diverted, Uber works quite well in Montreal.

Disembarking in Montreal in October 2024 and will spend the night, depending on flights out the next day. Any hotel recommendations?
