Teechur Posted June 27, 2023 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2023 Is it just me? 🙃 Constant use of acronyms makes it hard to follow threads, especially when you aren't starting at the original post. For example: "CC" can refer to Cruise Critic; credit card; club class; call center; et al. If posters have time to contribute opinions, would it be possible to spell out more of the subjects to which you are referring? Thanks! 😵💫 5
Rare cr8tiv1 Posted June 27, 2023 #2 Share Posted June 27, 2023 More often than not, it is easy to figure out CC from context (or thread title). But I do blame it on texting, tweeting, or other social media. Grammar, punctuation, short cuts, capitalization, and grammatical marks (periods, apostrophes, etc) have been thrown out with syntax. I am more bothered by posters using interchangeable condensations like FCD/FCC or Princess calling a cabin a mini-SUITE instead of a "balcony". At least they changed it to "Reserved Class" to make sure everyone understood that they are moving to a "CLASS" society. Oh, the glory days of the Titanic or Queen Mary in Long Beach. As for me, I still have to ask someone who sends me letters what those letters mean. I do know LOL, BTW, TA, but CVP? I dislike changes.

Rare Rick&Jeannie Posted June 27, 2023 #4 Share Posted June 27, 2023 (edited) I've even seen "TA" used for both travel agent/advisor as well as TransAtlantic. It has taken me awhile, as well as the incentive to read a complete thread in order to get the context of everything. You can usually catch on when you do so. I used to work for NASA and they are BIG on acronyms. Half the time I would have to ask someone what it meant or try to look it up.🙂
John99 Posted June 27, 2023 #12 Share Posted June 27, 2023 OK folks -- there are many good ideas present in this thread. I can see why UK cruisers may have a problem with our acronyms. Rick & Jeannie I like the one about the TA (Travel Agent versus TransAtlantic) Also, I like the one using a TA to book a TA. I’ll give it my best shot on some definitions (or acronyms) people use: FCD - Future Cruise Deposit can only be purchased on previous cruises for $100 that will be charge to your credit card on file (not cruise portfolio). They are to be used as a deposit toward a future booking. By using a FCD you will also receive OBC dependent on cabin category. Expiration date: 1 year (this is new). FCC - Future Cruise Credit given by Princess for a cancelled cruise. Usually has an expiration date or book by date. It can be applied to cruise payment, EZ Air, port taxes and fees. OBC - Onboard Credit that you receive from a promotion or purchasing ahead (as in casino credits). (Includes Military OBC) Shareholder OBC - Requires ownership of 100 CCL stock. OBC is dependent on length of cruise. (Shareholder OBC and Military OBC are not combinable – this is new) Medallion Class App - mobile device app that lets you check in. Also, most (but not all) of it can be done on a Web Based link. Many cruisers have experience problems and consternation – IT Dept get your act together. Medallion - Little round thing a ma-jig that opens your cabin door and allows you to do a few other things like get you on/off the ship. How about ordering drinks or food – if it’s working. Some cruisers report drinks never an arrive in reasonable amount time or at all. So they walk up to the bar an order. MedallionNet - paid inTERnet service/wi-fi/surfing the internet for email, Google, etc Ocean Concierge - inTRAnet. Used for ordering and finding people. Ocean Navigator - the IT folks who are supposed to help you with the Medallion Class App. I know there are a lot of other definitions. OK I give up! What is SWAK? Maybe I’ll learn something. My favorite: A mini-suite is NOT a suite. It is a premium gloried deluxe balcony cabin. No suite perks, even with Club Class. John

BTW, I’m happy with these, because it’s a lot faster than spelling everything out. You can figure out what it means, by the sentence context. Well, usually. 😀

XBGuy Posted June 27, 2023 #17 Share Posted June 27, 2023 Googling "Acronym Definition" quickly leads to this: Acronym -- an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g. ASCII, NASA ). Other commonly used acronyms include: COVID -- COrona Virus Disease Laser -- Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation Qantas -- Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Things like BTW or DOJ or FCD are abbreviations, but are not acronyms.

damiross Posted June 27, 2023 #19 Share Posted June 27, 2023 What I do for abbreviations/acronyms is to spell it out the first time give the abbreviation: e.g. Princess Cruise Lines (PCL) By the way, there is a difference between abbreviations and acronyms. All acronyms are abbreviations but not all abbreviations are acronyms. An acronym is an abbreviation that can be pronounced (e.g. NASA). An abbreviation is not an acronym when you cannot pronounce it or it usually isn't pronouced (e.g. PCL, COD). 1
