Cheers 1st day

We are cruising out of New York and had a question about The cheers package. I realize the regular package doesn’t start until the second morning, but are we able to get sodas with it the first day? Trying to decide if its worth spending the money for a bottle of Jack or just buying the drinks individually.

You will not have Cheers on the first day, you are not paying for Cheers on the first day. So any drinks you buy on the first day will be paid a la carte. Doesn't matter if it's alcoholic or not.

I’ve heard from a friend that on YouTube there are great videos on rum running…or you can just pay for your drinks that you order… OR don’t drink day one and save money (my favorite).

Must be a New York thing? Out of Miami, Cheers was active from the moment you boarded. There are taxes added on to each drink, which are extra on top of Cheers, until the ship reaches international waters. The taxes don't amount to much, however.

Only NY and TX. Has to do with the laws in those states. Why can't they just make Cheers kick in once the casino opens and they're in international waters? Not sure.

I think that would raise the 'what do you charge' question.  I don't know what I would pay for a drink package that won't start until after 6pm.

So the reality with Texas is that the liquor must actually be purchased IN Texas. The ships have a completely separate bar supply that literally gets boxed up and stored away the moment they get to international waters. Total PIA. I'm guessing that the accounting for that is completely separate making the handling of Cheers a literal impossibility practically speaking.

My initial reaction was that law is ridiculous, but I guess I see the logic to it. Say a Texas bar near the border of a neighboring state with lower liquor taxes buying liquor there to evade the Texas tax.
