What's Happening on Symphony?

Recommended Posts

Just received an email from our daughter as they were just starting dinner on Deck 3.  Suddenly, about 100 people started coughing, including our daughter.  It was announced there was a big fight on Deck Two and security had to use pepper spray which may have gotten into the ventilation system.

Anyone have more details?

In our experience I find it odd that they would "announce" a big fight, usually not wanting to draw attention to an incident such as that.  Similarly defining pepper spray as the cause of the irritation also seems odd. Certainly they may say that something inadvertently entered the ventilation system but has been cleared so as not to have people overly concerned.

But if they did in fact announce that with the detail included then I think you have your answer.  Your quest for more details may be futile as nothing more may be released.  But if it was, it would likely come from your daughter as well, although fact versus speculation passed amongst passengers may be hard to discern.  Perhaps others on board would respond able to add to this information.  So far, however, it seems not.

Onboard now. Not aware of this but recently both my wife and I started having breathing issues, constricted breathing. We were in the WJ and Suite Lounge then down to Sthe Boardwalk and back to our cabin. That’s when my wife mentioned her breathing difficulties and I thought it was odd that I was also experiencing the same thing. So perhaps the pepper spray theory is the cause. I’ve just been out and about and all is quiet.

So if an announcement was made, you did not hear it?

Not sure what you are asking. No announcements have been made since we left Coco Cay. If there was one I would have heard it. Maybe it only occurred in certain areas of the ship where I was not present.

The OP indicated that an announcement was made regarding a big fight and pepper spray being used to control it that may have into the ventilation system.  I was wondering if you had also heard that.

I was hoping someone else would chime in. Perhaps an announcement was made in the dining room but I wasn’t there. I just came to report that my wife and I both experienced tightness in our chests around the time this supposedly happened. It only lasted a few minutes. The pepper spray theory seems plausible, we don’t have any other explanation for it.

OP - have you heard anything more from your daughter?

As soon as I do, I will share.  She did follow up to say the effects wore off after a time.

I was on Symphony this past week. My DH and I were going to early seating (5pm) of dinner and we were running a few minutes late. Our family members had already arrived by elevator to Deck 3 a few minutes before us. As I walked onto the elevator on Deck 9 feeling absolutely fine I started coughing from the time the elevator doors closed behind me to the time they opened on Deck 3. I figured maybe I was slightly allergic to someone’s cologne on the elevator. As soon as I tried to step off the elevator to go to dinner on Deck 3 my daughter was waiting there and she quickly ushered me back onto the elevator, telling me not to step into the elevator waiting area…that someone on the staff (security?) had used pepper spray on Deck 2 because a fight had broken out. This pepper spray incident would be an upsetting event for many people but for me it can be deadly as I go into anaphylactic shock due to strong chemicals in the air around me. I have gone to the ER over potpourri at a craft fair, really strong perfumes, new car smell in a car with closed windows on a rainy test drive, Tilex, Chem Lawn, etc. Luckily I always carry two EpiPens with me at all times but I did not need them that night. My family and I hung out in Central Park a bit until we heard that conditions were safe to walk through Deck 3’s elevator area again as they were using large fans on the floor to improve the ventilation. No formal announcement was made about what had happened but a waiter later confirmed the vague details I noted above.

( Just an FYI…I would have gladly allowed any adult to use my EpiPens that night if they had needed them because, believe me, time is of the essence. But just in case someone would think of allowing a young child to make use of an adult EpiPen…don’t ever do it…they are too powerful for a child under 66 pounds.)

I got an update from our daughter.  Apparently, a fight took place at or near the gangway between two passengers.  Security used pepper spray.  At least one person was escorted to the brig and later taken off the ship.  Glad you are o.k. Eleanor Rigby 14.

Thanks, Yogimax. By the way, that’s a cute photo of your cat. Makes me miss my cat who I had for 13 years until recently. She really became a valued member of our family.

Dubinsky, named after a hockey player.  He's 14 and we love him dearly.  Thank you!

Thank you for this update acknowledging, as I suspected, that no announcement was made regarding the issue.

The only reason I raised the question is we were on a ship once when a rather aggressive domestic issue took place in a stateroom that resulted in the couple being separated with the husband locked in a vacant inside stateroom on our deck under guard.  The husband and wife were both escorted off the ship the next morning in St. Martin, the husband in handcuffs.

No announcement of any kind was ever made regarding this. Guest Services staff actually claimed no knowledge of it when a woman who was traveling solo, who was very frightened by the commotion with the husband being detained in the inside stateroom, which happened to be across from her stateroom, asked them if everything was resolved and wanted assurance all was now safe. We went with her to GS and she was very frustrated that they denied any knowledge to the point of implying that the woman must have been incorrect indicating it never happened. Our confirmation of the event was responded to with a blank stare.

We only knew of it as we witnessed the activity with the husband and saw them escorted off the ship from our balcony. My point being most cruise lines are very guarded of these things on board and IMO go out of their way to avoid any mention of it, and certainly don't typically announce it.  Very protective of negative fallout.
