VIPcruzer Posted May 1, 2008 #28 Share Posted May 1, 2008 Hi! We have a suite on the Gem leaving May 11. So excited!!! I have read on cc that the Garden Cafe is crazy for lunch on the first day and that we should try and go to one of the main dining rooms for lunch. Can suite guests go to Cagneys for lunch instead on the day we leave? This is my first cruise and I am not sure how the first day works.

I have read on cc that the Garden Cafe is crazy for lunch on the first day and that we should try and go to one of the main dining rooms for lunch. Can suite guests go to Cagneys for lunch instead on the day we leave? This is my first cruise and I am not sure how the first day works. When we got on the Gem on the 4/12 sailing, we asked someone if the VIP lunch at Cagney's was open and they said no. Since we got back, we've seen a few posts here that said it actually was open. It is worth the effort to take the mid-ship elevators up to 13 to check. The restaurants (buffet and dining room) get packed for that first lunch. luvwater Posted May 1, 2008 #30 Share Posted May 1, 2008 On my last Gem Cruise, I was also told that Cagney's was not open for lunch. So we went to the buffet, had lunch, walked upstairs to check out the ship and yes, indeed Cagneys was open.
ItsBob Posted May 1, 2008 #31 Share Posted May 1, 2008 We ate breakfast and lunch almost every day for our 13-day TransAtlantic. I'm inclined to say that having that benefit was one of the major highlights of our cruise. We were indulged with great food, wonderful service, and a luxurious setting with beautiful views; to say that we were "spoiled" is an understatement. It sure as heck beat crowded buffet lines with people pushing and shoving and hoarding precious table space.

So, if you did not identify yourself as a suite (not minisuite) passenger, you were given the correct answer.
angeljt Posted May 1, 2008 #33 Share Posted May 1, 2008 This was Cagney's breakfast menu from April 5-12, 2008. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2774639530051977359hSgWSp We never made it to Cagney's or the Courtyard for lunch, but we did see a menu in the Courtyard. The breakfast menu was the same in the Courtyard as it was in Cagney's, but I'm not sure about lunch. This is the menu we saw. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2313715500051977359miiEbE
luvwater Posted May 2, 2008 #34 Share Posted May 2, 2008 Cagney's is NOT open for lunch for non-suite passengers. So, if you did not identify yourself as a suite (not minisuite) passenger, you were given the correct answer. We asked our cabin steward while he was in our suite. So no...we were given the wrong information. No big deal I know for next time.
letrader Posted May 2, 2008 #35 Share Posted May 2, 2008 can anyone confirm if fruit juice (ie. Orange juice, apple, tomato juice) is included with breakfast or is it an additional charge. I had heard that they were included and available for breakfast at the buffet, so assumed they would also be available free of charge at Cagney's for breakfast, however according to the menu's posted above they show a charge. Anyone know the scoop on this?

Family From Down Under Posted May 2, 2008 Author #39 Share Posted May 2, 2008 When we got on the Gem on the 4/12 sailing, we asked someone if the VIP lunch at Cagney's was open and they said no. The restaurants (buffet and dining room) get packed for that first lunch. That's a great tip, thanks (these boards are so useful!). I wouldn't have thought to check if Cagneys was open for lunch on the first day. On previous cruises (RCL and Carnival) the lunch after embarkation has always been crowded and manic. In fact, we were only discussing recently that we might give lunch a miss that day. Now, we'll be heading to Cagneys.
watchdiva Posted May 2, 2008 #40 Share Posted May 2, 2008 On our Pearl cruise last year, after being escorted to our suite on embarkation day, our butler mentioned that we should go to Cagney's which was open for suite passengers for lunch. I had the BEST hamburger I've ever had in my life! We were hoping that under the new 2.0 that Cagney's would be open for breakfast and lunch for suite pax on the Dawn and WOOHOO - it is! Guess I know where we'll be eating on embarkation day:D .

garycarla Posted June 27, 2017 #45 Share Posted June 27, 2017 NINE YEAR OLD THREAD? It really should be deleted or locked down. Things have changed quite a bit in nine years. Bummed I actually spent time reading it.
Rare All-ready2cruise Posted June 27, 2017 #46 Share Posted June 27, 2017 I know, right... 9 years... wow. Nope, suites are suites only if the category is an "s" or an "H". Any other category is destined to dine in the MDR or Buffet or O'Sheehans... one of my favourites. PS, I obviously had nothing better to do this evening so no worries for me... ;p
njhorseman Posted June 27, 2017 #47 Share Posted June 27, 2017 Someone replied to a 13 year old post today on the Oceania board. The strangest thing about it is that the poster is hardly a Cruise Critic novice. Usually this sort of thing is only done by new or infrequent posters. jinteso Posted June 27, 2017 #49 Share Posted June 27, 2017 I have to give davidk credit though. At least he did look for an answer rather than just start a new thread like most people do (including me). And I did have room service on the Norway in 1996. My very first cruise.
