I have not wrote my review yet because I am very sick, got sick on the last two days of the cruise. I have bronchitis (I am not a smoker and have never even had one smoke my entire life) I am 23 y/o and healthy. My Dr asked me yesterday if I had been exposed to second hand smoke recently and my answer was a YES. I am here to state that I knew the smoke issue was an issue on the Breakaway I just did not think it was of a severe problem as I encountered throughout the ship. I should also state that I do not have asthma. This alone would discourage me from sailing on the Breakaway again...very poor planning on NCL's part. It is mind baffling how many smoking areas there are and how the stench permetes the entire ship.

Thanks

Taylor

its luck of the draw. i played in the casino in OCT and came home just fine

came home from DEC trip where i played at the casino as well. and had super bad cough. but i looked at my records and i got sick the previous december and i was never on a ship before

so basically its luck of the draw if you get sick

Sorry you got sick. Not really sure you can catch Bronchitis for 2nd hand smoke exposure. There is a very bad upper respiratory infection going around in NY area. Are you sure you didn't just catch some type of virus ?

Yes...the NYC area is being hit hard with URIs ....it would not be surprising that there were infected PAX on your cruise. (last year..I came home with infection and pneumonia after a cruise....there were many coughing people on the sailing ...on day one...I got sick..day 4)

I am just going on what my Dr. told me he said that you can get it from second hand smoke because it weakens the bronchial (Sp?) tubes. along with some other medical terms.

It certainly doesn't help, but I doubt such a small amount of smoke is going toke someone that sick. When I was growing up, people smoked everywhere, movies, supermarket, planes, homes, cars, restaurants... and people weren't ruining g around plagued by bronchitis. I did get it a few times in college, combination of germs and smoking, but I smoked back then, and so did my friends in the dorms. It was like living in a casino with zero air purifiers.

I have been sick for the past three weeks with a cold and cough and have not been on a cruise when the cold started.

It's that time of the year and you would have gotten sick if you were home or somewhere else.

You can't always blame the cruise ship for your sicknesses.

also sometimes on vacation you run yourself down more and make yourself more likely to be sick. i firmly believe this. however 2 days i was in bed untl 1130 and still got sick so this was not the case for me.

or maybe i was getting sick and thats why i was in bed that late lol.

i do believe if you are on the verge of something and dont get enough rest and you are in small spaces with 4000 people. smoke or not, you will get sick

i tried to teach the kids to do the knuckle on elevator buttons but they even forgot sometimes.

My mother-in-law got Bronchitis the second week, and my husband and I have it now. There were so many people coughing and hacking, that it could have come from anywhere.

I felt that the ship was VERY clean and really don't think I caught it from the ship itself. There were also several cases of Strep Throat and Pneumonia, as I found out whe I took my MIL to the infirmary. You get all kinds of people on ships. It could, and has, happened on other ships/cruise lines.

We can't wait to plan our next one. We loved the Breakaway, and couldn't, for the life of us, figure out where all the previous, negative reviews came from. Oh well, hope you feel better!

Just off the Gem last week and EVERYONE was coughing or sniffling by the end of the cruise.

We were a couple weeks before you and really didn't see anybody really hacking away. I did go back to work though where it seemed 75% of the folks were hacking and a couple days later so was I. Going on 4 weeks now and slowly feeling better each day.

The total bill was $1600, but we will get it reimbursed through the travelers insurance. I will say though, for everything they did, (bloodwork, chest xray, medications, and nebulizer treatments) I was okay with it.

We were on the same sailing. I just assume I'm going to pick up some kind of bug every time we cruise. We're self employed and I work alone in a home office so I don't get exposed to anything normally. Every time we get on a ship with a few thousand other people I get hit with something. I just plan for it - use lots of hand sanitizer, pack cold medications, and order lots of honey lemonades. ;)

seriously I hope you feel better! I am an ex smoker and I HATE smoke. I am going on that ship in March and I am a little nervous about the smoke issue. DH and I love to gamble, we'll see how it works out, feel better

There are 4 smoking areas on the entire ship including the Haven which most passengers do not have access to. I would hardly call that "many".
