  1. If is June 2023, at this point should try to book anything as they might be full already. Coastal in Juneau, Temsco in Skagway or from ship. We have done both as well as Matanuska and all were very pricy and spectacular. Also canceled due to weather often. With receding glaciers might be harder to do in future. Extra days leads to expensive hotels & car. Check youtube for videos of all three. Skip the ad ones and do the RVers (like A Plus K) and Cruisers. We went ICE CLIMBING on the Matanuska Glacier in ALASKA! - YouTube We didn't climb but just walked with cramp ons, helmets and poles. sightcrr.
  2. Recent posts about Valdez said that the ship docks in an industrial area that does not allow people to walk off the ship without ship tour or paid ticket to downtown. My advise would be to make sure to check with your tour operator. sightcrr
  3. Only Juneau & Skagway and each helo only. Maybe Seward again helo. Only one someone can drive to is Matanuska 1.5 Hr drive outside ANC. Not sure about Portage Glacier area. sightcrr
  4. In Whitehorse keep an eye open for the DC-3 airplane that is a weathervane and spins around as the wind direction changes. It is at the Transportation Museum. The World's Largest Weathervane, a DC-3 – Whitehorse, Yukon - Atlas Obscura
  5. Thanks for taking us along with your details. The gold mining in the area should be starting to pick up. Two different mines nearby on Gold Rush tv show. Take Care.
  6. Here is a long shot at a great tour. Read up on his web site and see if it would work for you and if he has openings. Lucky chance guide serviceSitka, alaska907-738-8233irmadiman@yahoo.com - Home
  7. I have not done W/C to totem bight park but have done it from downtown and it was easy. Looks like you want the silver line and less than 10 min ride. One per hour each way. Here is the link. From watching youtubes it looks like the hardest part is getting uphill to the main road from the building after the pier. BUS-Schedule-2023-SPRING (kgbak.us) but look for the SUMMER schedule later. We wanted to see more of Ketch so we got off at park & bus continues on & turns around and heads back to town and we caught the same bus back. Not sure how the senior passes work. Hope someone else could provide more info. sightcrr.
  8. Make sure you have your shore excursions planned out and if time allows at least one backup. With short times in port please don't just walk off the ship and look for things to do. Many may be full already.
  9. I have no idea what the O-dam drydock is going to have done. If you want a sample of what a cruise ship drydock looks like here is a 1 hour youtube about a RCCL in Cadiz Spain by a crewmember temporally assigned to firewatch. I found it fascinating especially when he looked over the side into the drydock. He didn't know what he was filming for a lot of it.
  10. When I first saw your post I thought you must have worked the conversion to USD wrong but I don't see any cheaper way. It now includes the $70 usd gondola ride. fyi here are some web cams of the area of Juneau and ISP. TheSnowCloud Juneau area Webcams
  11. NCL Ketch is likely Wards Cove short stay out of town. Hubbard vs G/B both great. ISP whales better than college fjord if the ISP times are long enough. Don't to much care for NCL overall short port times. Same days? What about NCL one direction and Princess the other?
  12. Here is the shot from the faa camera near Denali. FAA WeatherCams Thanks for taking us along. sightcrr.
  13. Should be fine if not docked at Wards Cove. Google street view will let you view the walk the whole way now. sightcrr
  14. Since you are asking about O-dam look at the archives of the web cam. Find the dates and then go along with the ship. You can rotate, zoom and move it all kinds of ways. They were in Stanley FI on 26 Jan 23. Webcam Holland America Line - Oosterdam - PANOMAX 360° sightcrr
  15. Check on the Antarticia and also the South America ports boards. Lots of good info. Read a little about the drive by vs stand on tours until you get tired of them and skip them once you made your decision. sightcrr.
  16. go on youtube and view excursions. just about every tour will be there. with all the glacier viewing skip Mendenhall and go whale watching. skip the log show in ketch and do crab boat. since the road past mp 43 likely closed skip Denali. with budget flights are out. Keep Matanuska glacier whatever you do. Look into Musk Ox farm nearby.
  17. Do a search of "live From" and sort out the ones that apply. The NCL Bliss has some early trips. This year Skagway had some excursions shortened due to heavy snow pack. sightcrr.
  18. Watch some youtube videos of the AK helo trips to see what it is like.
  19. The HAL 14 day starting May 7 had real rough weather the first couple days & Kodiak got canceled. From then on it has been unbelievably great. Likely no relationship to what 24 will be.
  20. Make sure you read up about the crab boat tour in Ketch and note that you are likely at Wards Cove in Ketch. Grandson did snorkeling in Sitka booked w/ HAL and enjoyed it. Just told you everything I know about snorkeling. Forgot to add to check youtube as just about every AK tour will have someone that did it besides all the ad ones that you can skip. Snorkel Sitka - YouTube sightcrr.
  21. Check youtube for past tips on R-dam and take a good look at outside videos in slow speeds that may give you clues on good spots. Spend the first sea day scouting for places. Take a copy of deck plans. One of the best spots we found was outside a door in the corner of the gym. (was not on R-dam). But you get the idea. While looking for a spot take note of what would work best in rain or sun & wind and as captain turns ship around. Make sure you have weather worthy rain/sun hats, coats etc. Look under the aft pool when you are leaving from one to another. Bow may be open but have to be there early and long time. Likely if outside won't be able to hear rangers. Photo on something HAL on way to Hubbard Glacier, sightcrr

    Valdez

On the C/C Holland American board several people are commenting on Valdez this week. Go to page 4 &5 from CrewNews link. Do a search Live from Nieuw Amsterdam 14-Day Alaska Explorer .
