  1. I am very much looking forward to cruising next August from New York to Reykjavik on the Star with stops at Halifax, St. John’s, St. Pierre, 3 stops in Greenland and 3 in Iceland. Much more interesting to me than any round trip.
  2. Protectors are a waste of time. Tags only have to last from ship side to your cabin. In 20 cruises, never had one break, never heard of one breaking.
  3. Go for the smoked salmon on toasted half bagel with cream cheese, tomato and chives for breakfast in the MDRs.
  4. I’d rather eat every meal in the buffet than be the sixth adult in a 2 bedroom suite. The latter are meant for 2 parents and 2 kids.
  5. A lot crowded. I wouldn’t do this. I would rather be outside the Haven.
  6. Sailed around the Mediterranean, from Rome to Lisbon, on the Viva back in September. Had a Club Balcony Suite. Very enjoyable cruise.
  7. I liked the shrimp and mussels on ice, with cocktail sauce available, in the Viva’s buffet one evening in September.
  8. As we say in accounting, “sunk costs are sunk.” Can’t be recovered, not to be considered in new purchase decisions.
  9. The buffet has had hard ice cream (not self-serve) on the NCL ships on which I have cruised.
  10. On the other ships, hard ice cream is hand scooped by a server behind the counter (soft ice cream is self-serve). No information here as to whether or not the Prima and Viva have the same.
  11. That’s right. Subtracting out the 20% service charge, that’s $33.12 per meal. Difficult to find a decent 3-course dinner here for that price.
  12. I have four scheduled NCL cruises. For each cruise, the cost of a two-meal specialty restaurant upgrade is $82.80, including the 20% service charge. That’s a good deal cheaper than two dinners in a decent restaurant in my small-city hometown (Dayton, OH).
  13. Luggage rack above seats. Europeans often travel by train between cities with luggage.
  14. No, the easiest and most comfortable way to get from Venice to Trieste is by the modern train. Short walk or, if you have heavy luggage, very short cab ride to cruise port.
  15. I use it to buy a bottle of high-end duty free liquor in the ship’s stores.
  16. How disappointing. While the Daily lists an “informal bridge play get together,” it lacks the organized bridge program (beginner lesson, intermediate lesson and game) that I have enjoyed on sea days on four previous NCL transatlantic crossings.
  17. Surely I am not the only one who remembers that terrorists with AK47s, posing as passengers, hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro in the 1980s. They separated out the Jews, shot one of them (Klinghoffer), and dumped his body overboard.
  18. I grew up in NYC in the 1950’s, when the early editions of the Times, the Herald-Tribune, the Daily News and the Mirror hit the newsstands on the evenings before their publication dates. In fact, the advertising slogan of the Daily News was “tomorrow’s news today.”
