How do you get an upsell

I have sailed Princess many times and my small travel agent usually sent me via email or phone upsell offers that were usually good that I took. I have read a lot of the upsell threads when I did a search but now my travel agent seems to be out of business or does not respond to request for quotes. The only other travel agent I have thought about using is the large membership wholesale company (can I mention the name of this and my old agent or is that forbidden) that has good OBC but does not offer upsells. I called them and they will not call me and I called Princess and they said you have to work through the travel agent.

So how do you get an upsell offer if your travel agent offers no customer service other than good prices and good OBC?

Can people give recommendations on good travel agents with good service?

Thanks, Rick

we're not allowed to mention agencies here.

you said your travel agent does not offer upsells.... tha'ts true. the upsells come from princess.

i think you are very fortunate if you've had many!

Join your Rollcall- and monitor it.

When someone says they got an upsell offer, get phone number from the CC member. Call immediately.

If you get the phone number - give it to the others on the rollcall AFTER you have called and decided about taking the offer.

You can call if you see someone else on your roll call saying that they got an offer, but this doesn't mean that you will also get an offer. And since it is an upsell, not an upgrade, the financial part must be handled thru your TA. I guess I don't understand why you would choose a TA who offers no service (yes, I do understand the value of OBC). Unfortunately we are not allowed to recommend agents here. On your next cruise, talk to people you meet about their agents....or if your roll call has a meet and greet, that's a great place to ask.

You actually have to have the phone number and extension to call for the upsell. It's not the same department as calling the 1-800 Princess line. Each time I've gotten one, it's been a different extension.

The financial part of the upsell can definitely be handled directly between the booked party and Princess, a TA does not need to be involved. Once I get the upsell email forwarded to me by my TA, I call the phone number listed and handle the transaction myself. Always have to leave a message and then wait for the call back from Princess.

I received an upsell on my last cruise and my next cruise. Both times I booked a balcony and went up to a mini. My sister and my parents who cruise more than me have never gotten one. They also book balconies. So how? I have no clue but it makes me happy.

The bottom line on how you get an upsell offer--luck of a sort. Not all upsells are good deals for the purchaser. You need to look at the cabin you are giving up and what you are getting!

Absolutely the upsells are not always “good deals”.

I will stand by all the methods listed above including the one labeled Method four.

But if the CC member puts the phone number on there, wouldn't everyone already be able to see it?!!!

The vast majority of upsells are not worth it. At least to me. They are offered based on supply and demand, usually if you’ve booked a lower category of inside or oceanview. If demand is high for your cabin category and there are cabins available of a better type, you MAY receive an upsell offer. There are never any guarantees and it’s different for every sailing. I’ve been offered quite a few upsells but only took one. The rest were far more than I was willing to pay.

I have been offered several upsells and have taken two of them. Others I have passed on as I didn't want to move. One upsell I took likely wasn't worth the money but I wanted to do the cabin change so, to me, it worked out OK. What I want is not really an upsell but a move over offer. I have seen so many posts about amazing move over offers. Now that we are retired and don't have to worry about work schedules and such I would dearly love to see a move over offer come my way. However, I won't hold my breath for such an offer and will continue to book cruises and cabins that work well for me.

That being said, even though I've already taken one for my next cruise, I'm hoping for one more. There are still CC Mini's, PH's and Window Suites available and we sail in 25 days. A girl can dream.

Waiting too for our cruise that leaves in 11 days to Alaska. Received one upsell about 3 or 4 weeks ago to go from an OV to balcony but the add'l amount was too much at that time. Probably won't be getting an upsell to a suite, which would be sweet!, just hoping another balcony upsell or even upgrade comes my way. There are still some CC Mini's, PH's and Window Suites that are available for our cruise as well. I'm guessing the ones that are in the mini suites will receive upsell offers soon and then that will leave way for balcony's to go to minis and maybe OV to go to balconies. We can certainly dream. Good luck with your cruise!

We’ve only received one with Princess but have received several with Holland America. You must jump on them immediately as I’m sure they are offered to way more people than they need in order to get enough to take it.

If you used a travel agent they will get the email first and hopefully they will forward it to you in a timely manner. Then you call The number provided and speak to Princess directly. If you have cruise line insurance the cost of the insurance will go up according to the extra cabin cost.

While you can see what is showing on line, there is no way that you really know what is available. There can be unassigned gtys needing to be placed in cabins, which may or may not affect upsells. Typically it seems that Princess attempts to clear lower cost cabins by doing upsells, then assigns the gtys to something close to what they booked.

So apparently the secret to getting access to upsells is to book with a TA who is reliable enough to pass along the offer or to book directly with Princess. I had to check to see which way I booked the one cruise where we took an upsell--directly with Princess. It was last December's cruise on the Royal. I took the upsell to a suite. It was a cruise that included my birthday, plus DH had recovered from surgery earlier in the fall. I felt we should celebrate. We'll probably never splurge for a suite again. It helped that my original booking of the cruise was a great casino rate for a balcony cabin. The per person per day rate for the suite turned out to be reasonable.

Because I had received such a great casino rate, I went ahead and booked the cruise directly when I could not contact my regular travel agent. For our February cruise on the Regal, I booked another casino rate but through a big box store's travel department. The little bit of OBC credit we got for doing so was nice. No upsell offers on that cruise for us--but I did not hear of any on our roll call either. Our upcoming cruise is back with my regular travel agent. I know from past cruises booked with him that he's good about passing along the emails he receives from Princess (although I usually find out my cabin assignment on the Cruise Personalizer before he has the chance to send it to me).

We always reserve the cabin we want and have our TA mark it do not upgrade. Before a Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale cruise 5 years ago we decided at the last minute (about 2 weeks before leaving for Quebec) to add on the following 5 day Western Caribbean cruise so I reserved directly on line. We requested a guarantee ME mini-suite (our preferred cabins) and were assigned an MA mini-suite the next day. The day after that we were offered an upsell to a Vista Suite. I don't remember the cost but it was very reasonable.

On the subject of casino rates - I've never gambled and I try to avoid even walking through the ship's casino due to the smoke so I was very surprised to receive an email offering me a very good casino rate last winter. We didn't take Princess up on it and I still wonder why we received the promotion.
