Vacation from he'll...my fault though

Recommended Posts

I have just gotten off the Grandeur of the Seas with a possible broken wrist and missing camera :(:(

The ship was awesome, the crew fabulous. They definitely insured a trip to remember. And the nurse in medical was amazing as was the crew that helped me out. The shows were ok. It was impossible not to have a good day when we saw our steward, he was always so happy! John Blair, cruise director was ok...didn't see him around much. But overall the ship and crew made it an amazing trip! We did dock in Cozumel right next to the oasis...fiancé and I had been considering our honeymoon on it...what a beast of a ship!

Unfortunately, the trip changed after I took a nasty spill in Cozumel. Was walking out of a souvenir shop and missed the stairs as I had turned back to talk to my mom. I fell down the stairs on the concrete on top of my left wrist which I am now not able to move and has abrasions up and down. Right after I fell, the employees quickly helped me up and got me in a chair and wrapped my arm in napkins and paper towels to stop the bleeding. My mom was panicking about what to do next and being in another country. Someone must've told some crew members because not too long after crew members from both carnival (inspiration was docked) and royal cariabbean were there to help. My mom gave them my sea pass and I was taken through security directly to the ship to medical where the nurse had already been radioed and already waiting. I had abrasions on my wrist, right shin, and left foot cleaned and wrapped. My wrist was wrapped especially well to hold it still. I was hoping x-rays and such could wait till I at least was back to my parents a place in Naples where insurance would cover it. We are heading to Naples now.

And unfortunately, my camera was lost in my fall. There was so much chaos around with people helping me and I was more worried about myself. When I remembered, I was already in medical. Only photos lost were from the trip to that point...everything else was loaded on my computer. Losing a camera was a bummer, but I can buy a new one...which I will with the 330 bucks I won at the casino!

Overall, minus the fall, the trip was another wonderful experience and I firsthand got to see how they help you when you need it most! Hats off to everyone on the Grandeur of the Seas!

Ouch! So sorry to hear about your fall. That sounds very painful, and puts a huge damper on your vacation enjoyment. Here's to a quick recovery.

I really hope someone finds your camera and gets it back to you. Maybe someone getting ready to go to Cozumel can ask around. Do you remember what shop it was?

Oh no! I hope your arm heals okay!

On another note, I went on the Oasis end of May/early June- docked next to Grandeur in Cozumel and then went on the Grandeur the very next week. It is jaw dropping to see both ships next to each other. Love both ships! I highly suggest you make Oasis your honeymoon trip, it would be a blast!

What a great outlook you have! Hope your injury isn't too serious! Speedy recovery to you!

Absolutely. You have a terrific attitude to life and whatever gets thrown at you. Wish there were more on here that had a similar perspective. It's lovely you can give a pat on the back to the crew too.

I commend you for you great attitude and not letting your misfortune taint an otherwise enjoyable trip. The comment about about how the crew members from not only RCCI but Carnival attended to you really gave me a renewed confidence in those folks that work so hard on the ships. You do get a bad apple every now and then but they are very much in the minority. As others posted, I too, extend my wishes for your speedy recovery.

Wow, what a story! Sorry for your fall and I hope you heal quickly. Glad you could make the most of your vacation, even injured. I'm also glad you didn't lose many pictures and won the money to buy a new camera! A little good fortune mixed in with the bad.

I agree - do Oasis for the honeymoon! Don't let the wedding plans stress you or your fiance out, and enjoy this magical time of your lives together!

OP, I had a similar experience in St Maarten a few years ago when I fell off a curb onto cobblestone and seriously sprained my ankle! The locals were all wonderfully helpful in getting me back to the ship, and the staff on the Disney Magic were wonderful to me. Our room steward even tracked down the rest of my party to let them know what happened! I ended up using my dad's gout cane for the duration of the cruise, and everyone I encountered was just fantastic. Still had a great time, although with my limited mobility (I had to skip getting off at a couple of ports) I ended up spending way more at the spa than I initially planned! ;) Hopefully your camera will turn up at some point!

I couldn't tell you :( Just that it was a shop in their cruise terminal (which doesn't narrow it down much) :( I didn't really pay attention to the names as I would go in and out. And if I did, I would HIGHLY recommend a jewelry store that was around there. (1) The employees were NEVER in your face following you all over begging for a purchase and (2) they did lower their prices a lot, but once you told them you still couldn't pay it or you didn't have the money, they thanked you anyway and left you alone. In fact, when I fell, I broke my bracelet. One of the RCI guys that wasn't needed to help me (there were plenty) saw my mom holding my broken bracelet and asked if it was mine because he was going to hold it for me till I got on the ship...my mom told him I broke it in my fall. he actually asked for the place, my mom pointed it out and he took it to the store himself to get it fixed! That night, the steward left it on my bed! So another mad prop to RCI and also to that jewelry store for fixing my gorgeous mother-of-pearl bracelet (it is so NEAT looking!) There was one shop that was AWFUL. I walked in, looked at stuff, told them I couldn't afford it and walked out. Then my mom wanted to go so I walked in with her, she said she couldn't afford anything and then they got ME involved and told her I could help her buy something since I walked out with buying anything earlier! I told them that I never EVER said that and they could leave me out of it...so they then told my mom "well since your daughter does not appreciate you and your hard work, we will by lowering this to (insert price here)". I was PISSED:mad:

And it was hot as hell in Cozumel too LOL :D

I'm not sure who went and told them...but both Carnival and RCI came (I am assuming someone assumed I was a cruise passenger since I was shopping in their cruise terminal and they weren't sure what ship I was on) and Carnival even stayed to help even after my seapass card was shown. They all were awesome. They stood by me at the chair trying to calm me down and someone was explaining options to my mom (as far as transportation to a hospital--we were scared to do that, treatment on the ship, etc.) and others were asking what happened. As soon as I was on my way to the ship they did leave, but they were all there up to that point. RCI had radioed the nurse already and she was waiting right when I got there. It all ran very very smoothly. And I don't want to forget the locals either that helped me up and stayed with me until help came...they were just as awesome:D

Well bless your little heart..what a way to end a vacation..

I sure hope someone finds a way to get your camera back to you,but chances are,no one even noticed it until after the commotion was over..

Someone posted a great tip the other day.

write your name ,address, and number down, and take a picture of it..leave it as your first picture on your camera..

Hope you get better soon!

I, too, am sorry about your wrist and commend you for your attitude and not blaming others. Last year aboard the Ex of the Seas I was ice skating and took a nasty fall. My fault for going too fast! Luckily, I didn't break anything (except my pride--what an embarrassment)! My husband insisted that I hit my head, but my other end is what was really sore the next day. He is now pleading with me to wear a helmet (like a bicycle helmet) on our next cruise on the Mariner in Sept. Does anyone know if they even have them for ice skating? I really don't want to pack one.

Sissaysu -- so sorry to hear about your accident! :(

I do hope that someone finds and returns your camera -- that has happened before, as reported on these boards -- so don't give up hope. Best wishes for a speedy and uncomplicated recovery from your injuries.

Your story reminded me of a tumble I took several years ago in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. DH and I had just come out of a shop on one of the little side-streets, and I was carrying several packages. Even with sensible walking shoes on, I managed to turn my ankle on the uneven cobblestones -- and down I went! Fortunately, nothing was broken -- on me, or in the bags I was carrying. I escaped with bruised dignity and a little "road rash" -- nothing that couldn't be cleaned up with some bottled water and a little hand sanitizer! :o

What really amazed me about that experience was that every shop-keeper on that little alley came running out to see if I was OK, and kept asking if there was anything they could do. Just reminded me that there are good people everywhere! :)

Wow, thanks for that nice review and not blaming the cruise line for everything. Seems common sense is still to be found. Good to see that the crew members from the ships (did not matter which one) were quick to come to your aid as well.

Very nice. Hope all turns out well. You have a wonderful spirit.:D

Hope your recovery matches your great attitude and that someone is able to return your camera to you.

But am I the only one who noticed that there is no mention of that dreaded word "compensation"? It's so refreshing to see someone who understands what an accident is and isn't looking to blame someone else and get compensated.

Guest maddycat

I'll repeat what everyone else has already said. You are to be commended for your great attitude. Hope that you heal quickly.

You might want to consider buying travel insurance for your next cruise.
