If you like Patricia Cornwell, you should try Kathy Reichs - the original Temperence Brennan books, not the "Bones" ones from the TV show, which aren't as good.

Thanks, i will look into them.....I saw on the B and N website that Janet Evanovich has anew one out..."Smokin Seventeen", but I am sure it will not be in paperback in time for the trip.:( but lots of others to look for..thanks, L

I gave in and got a Kindle 2 months ago. Great in direct sunlight or normal room light. I usually read 4 -6 books on a week cruise so my suitcase just shrunk in size and weight. Probably will be reading new Grisham, John Locke, Tom Clancy and some of the"older" free selections available.

What will you be reading on your next cruise? I love easy reading mysteries on vacation (Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton) and will be bringing both on my next cruise. This is the first time I'll be bringing a Kindle rather than actual books on vacation. If I get tired of reading, I can always play Scrabble. I'm addicted!

We will be cruising in May with my DH and my Kindle. Since getting the my Kindle back in August, the two of us are attached...I go no where without it! And of course, I will be reading whatever tickles my fancy since I have a wide assortment of books on it. Best invention ever!

I waver between paperbacks I can leave on ship or a nook. I read a lot, belong to a book discussion group. The decision is the weight of books in your luggage or the price of books loaded on your nook!!!! As to what I will bring to read; Dana Stabanow & Sue Henry (I am going on an Alaskan cruise next), a couple of regency romances (my trashy reading) and anything else that that strikes my fancy at the moment!!!!

I love Sue Henry!! I always try a new one if we go to Alaska. With all of her dog sledding , it fits right in! :D But I actually like the character of Maxie who drives her big RV all over with her little dog best. I wish she would write more about Maxie and her adventures! Thanks for reminding me!

Also I can't wait for Auel's new one - I have got to check that one out. I always loved "the clan of the cave bear" series. She just takes so long between books that I forget the previous one. Guess it's time to reread.

Love Jean Auel also. Her last one was Shelters of Stone and the new one is Land of the Painted Caves. It will be out shortly.

I also love Maxie and her dog. My Dh and I are spending some extra days after our cruise/tour in the Kenai area and plan on driving to Homer.

This is Balfour680. Getting my ducks in a row for the upcoming Celebrity Cruise on the Infinity to the British Isles 6/13-6/23. Am I part of your Channel a Island walking tour? Contacted you so many months ago & wonder if it's still a go? Harriet

Just got off Caribbean Princess on Sunday and read Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah and Hold Tight by Harlan Coben. Love both of those authors!

How was Magic Hour? I like Kristen Hannah.

I bring my Nook Color - so much easier to transport. Just finished Where we Belong by Emily Giffin - chicklit for sure, but entertaining.

I plan on filling up my Nook Color with all sorts of things from the library. :)

Right now I'm reading Shogun by James Clavell for the 8th time. One of my favorites.

ah...anji-san; i think i have read that 20 times...pretty good tv mini-series too.

I used to think there was something sacred about holding a book in my hands and turning the pages ... until I got my Kindle. Now I can't imagine packing a dozen books or trekking to the ship's library.

I just spent an hour on our local's library getting a half dozen more books for our upcoming trip. I've been working my way through a list I found of the 99 Best Mysteries of the 20th Century (or something like that). I discovered authors I had never heard of. One I especially like is Aaron Elkins.

My DW and I are going our first cruise to Alaska this summer. I received a Kindle paperwhite for Christmas and have loved using it. I have several books from my favorite authors while new releases by our trip planned to download. Then I will grab some of the free items from my prime account. Looking forward to reading David Weber's new Honor Harrington updates along with Jim Butcher latest Harry Dresden book.

Can't wait under 90 days until the cruise.

If you like mysteries with a sense of humor, you should enjoy Flash Mob by Robert O'Connell. I've heard that the next book in the series will be set on a cruise ship (I can't wait for that one to come out...they say it will have some of the same characters).

I do most of my reading on a tablet (Flash Mob is available in paperback and Kindle...not sure about other e-readers).

Kindle for reading the endless number of books (free Amazon and library books) and for playing Scrabble. Laughing at how many others are addicted to Scrabble. Thanks for the info on other word games...I've now downloaded a bunch more...the perfect solution to noisy airports when you can't concentrate on reading.

My Kindle !!!! It is one of the original Kindles and is still going strong. I bought 2 Nooks for my Kids and 1 Nook for my Grandson because that is what they wanted for Christmas. All 3 broke within one year and B&N would not make good on them. My Kids and Grandson all have Kindles now :D Love the Kindle!! (I also found the Twins series in the free books--I loved them as a child--Many Years Ago -- and have enjoyed revisiting that time in the re reading of them)

We've had our Kindles for several years now and love them. It started out that we thought we'd use them only for travel, but now it's hard to go back to 'real books' - much heavier and can't adjust the font size.

We like to bring along books that are relevant to our destination, so for the next cruise (19 sea days!) we're bringing along Mark Twain's "Letters From Hawaii", Michener's "Hawaii" and "Tales of the South Pacific" to re-read. You can find a Michener book on just about any destination in the world!

For more modern authors, we enjoy some of the Bill Bryson travel/humor books, Ed McBain, Michael Prescott, Christopher Moore (very funny, similar to Carl Hiassen), Michael Connelly (especially the Harry Bosch series), Laurie King (the Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series), too many to list! For those of you who loved the series by the late Tony Hillerman, his daughter Ann is now taking over the series and her first book continues the high quality writing of her father.

By the way, in addition to Scrabble and word games, there are also solitaire games and even a rather cumbersome version of BlackJack that you can download to your Kindle. They make a nice diversion when sitting and waiting for your flight to board, or waiting to debark your cruise!

Paperbacks. Easier on my eyes and easier to deal with at the beach or pool.

I also read books related to where I'm going or have visited and sometimes leave them in the ship's library. For example, really enjoyed "Tales from the Expat Harem" for Turkey, "The Madonnas of Leningrad," and "Child 44" and "The Secret Speech" (both by Tom Rob Smith) for Russia, and, having seen the film "Monuments Men," I'm just finishing "The Rape of Europa" by Lynn Nicholas. It's incredible that literally thousands of pieces of great art moved by the ****s as well as countries in fear of them were saved and are now back in museums, pieces I've seen and had no idea the perilous journeys they had been on. Will be in Amsterdam in the fall and will probably take "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom.

I'll be bringing the Nook the DH got me for my birthday in 2012. I like to read biographies so I'll be downloading a couple of those. I usually read at night before I go to sleep as most of our day is spent doing other more active stuff. I sure do love to read though!:D

I use a Google Nexus 7 (won enough in the Casino last fall on the Breeze to upgrade to the 2013 version from the original). That way I have tons of books! I use both Google Books and Amazon Kindle. The format is almost identical and that way I'm happy with both Amazon and Google gift cards at Christmas! :D And there are some great games that don't require wifi access.

I remember 20 years ago thinking kids with Gameboys were strange - till they invented smart phones and tablets. Now in my fifties, I am that kid!

Last fall I read the latest Evanovich, a Lee Child, an autobiography by a former US Park Service Ranger in the Great Smoky Mountain Park plus one by a former Pro Football player turned successful business man turned drug addict turned straight. I spent the better part of three sea days out on the balcony reading! Its my favorite part of cruising!
