Thinking about smuggling in liquor?

Recommended Posts

Take it on board with you in your carryon bags. That way you're not hiding it and taking on that much. You won't have to wait in line to claim your luggage. They'll either take it or let it go through. I usually take on a few bottles of sealed water and haven't had a problem.

Thanks :) I will do this. I don't wanna hide anything, just gotta have my diet dr peppers, lol!! In all seriousness though, I will try this and if they wont allow it, no biggie, I will still be on a cruise with my dh, and that's what matters :)

My family of 5 will have 4 or 5 normal size suite cases delivered. Inside 2 or 3 will be a full size bottle of shampoo and condition in a zippy bag. I will also have a zip bag of contact eye stuff and probably hair spray bottle (pump) and possibly mouth wash will be inside one case. Im probably forgetting a product or 2 that we'll need that is liquid in a 16 oz (or so) bottle.

With all these bottles- and this thread- I feel that its highly possible theyll snatch my bags for inspection. While I understand what they are doing- I find it to be a bit of a stretch of boundaries that they would sniff my bottles and even make people go through this. We have to bring our liquids?!

Again I say I understand- but every suite case with a few bottles cant be grabbed- can they? Seems way too excessive to me, making people wait hours to retrieve their stuff. I leave 3/31 and am sooo excited!

On the occasions when I bring water on board, I luggage tag it seperately from my other stuff, so even if it gets delayed ( hasn't yet) my clothes and other things will not. If people weren't trying to smuggle alcohol, then they would not need to be sniffing mouthwash and shampoo.

I am very glad they enforce this; Ive never seen anyone act like an idiot and keep anyone up all night on shampoo or Dr Pepper; but haven't we all seen that happen when people over indulge? I like a cruise line where the drinking happens under the watchful eye of the bar staff in a public area.

With all of the drunk people falling over railings this year I can understand why RCCL would want to stem the flow of "illegal" liquor. Especially during Spring Break. I wouldn't be happy if I had to wait for hours because of contact solution but you can't hate RCCL... they put the rules up for all to see. If people followed them the searches wouldn't have to happen.

I advise all liquids be put in your carry on. My suitcase was held by security last week on the NOS. The only thing I had in it was sunscreen. I spent all evening trying to find my bag. At first they told me it wasn't on the confiscated list and no one knew where it was. We finally made another trip down to security and there sat my suitcase. The security officer insisted we had alcohol in it. They searched it and only found sunscreen. It was not a fun start to our trip.

I personally find that the whole attitude of Royal Caribbean towards the luggage search thing insulting and belittling. What is this high school? Get real, the whole thing for Royal is their bottom line...... I have been on Princess, Celebrity, and Carnival all of which have allowed a bottle of wine per person at least. I have never seen any issues on any of these cruises I have been on, starting in the early nineties all the way to a month ago. By being so restrictive they are inviting trouble. JMHO....

I guess pax can thank those that are smuggling alcohol onboard for the long lines and the waiting to claim baggage that may or may not have smuggled alcohol in it.

Yes..it is about RCIs bottom line. They are in business to make money. Their alcohol policy is different from CCL..HAL..Princess and X. Pax can choose to sail those lines if they prefer their alcohol policies to RCIs. I know that CCL line allows pax to purchase alcohol for their cabins. If you read that board you will see that many CCL pax still smuggle. So much for the argument that it isn't about saving money on booze but more of a convenience issue.

I have a feeling that in this economy smuggling has probably increased and continues to impact RCIs bottom line, which in turn impacts everyone who sails on those ships, including those who don't cheat and smuggle alcohol onboard.

It must be worth it for them to inspect that many bags and catch more smugglers or I doubt they would expend the manpower to do it.

We were on Mariner of The Seas Janurary 15-22 2012, one of our bags did not make it to our room... we were notified that they were downstairs to go to security ... we went down about 9:00 PM there were about 4 people in line .. it went very fast , they ask us what we had, Liquid showed up on the xray machine... we had a duffle bag with 3 12 packs of diet coke and a 6 pack of bottled water ... we took our bags and left with the diet coke and water... they did not care at all that we brought them....we saw a cart full of all kinds of wine and liquor ... wraped in bubble wrap , towels, etc....

I purchased a soda card as well as bring on my own diet cokes.... I don't like fountain diet coke YUK!!!!!!! but for convience I will drink a fountain coke or 2 there were 6 of us traveling together so RCCL should be happy I brought most of my own....

You mentioned that it bad customer service? Or is it good customer service because they clearly state you can't, so if they look the other way, what happens?

First of all, I don't smuggle alcohol. I also don't shoplift. The reason I make that comparison is there is a department store in this part of the country called Meijer. I don't shop there because they treat everybody like shoplifters equally. They evern broke an innocent guys neck because they thought he was shop lifting.

I'm not one to demand compensation for most things, but if you waste an hour of my vacation needlessly I will expect to be paid for my hour.

Who wants some strange person sniffing their water bottles, shampoo, etc.!

The cruise lines are getting to be ridiculous. Coming back from an excursion on our last cruise, I had a water bottle that they insisted on opening and sniffing-it was just water so they handed the bottle back which I promptly through away. Yecch:p

I totally agree with you. I am going on my first RCCI cruise very soon and I better not have to waste my time going to get a suitcase that has shampoo, gel, sunscreen, etc. in it.

It really is very simple. If people follow the rules, then they won't have to be punished and stand in long lines waiting to open their luggage for inspection.

And if I follow all the rules and do not bring on any alcohol on board but get called to the naughty room due to contact lens solution - I will be more than upset. In fact, out of protest, I would do everything to not spend extra on that cruise. Cancel all pre booked shore excursions and specialty resturants and have a very, very sober cruise. Casino - forget it - we will spend the time in our cabin playing cards. Book that cruise line again - not very likely. The small size of contact lens solution does not warrent that kind of hassle. Spring break or not - that is going overboard.

So who are you really punishing? RCCL can exist just fine without your purchases, but you will be hurting yourself over something really trivial.

Maybe I missed it, but I think the offending contact lens solution is the big "Costco" size bottle, not the 4oz. "normal" size bottle. Don't get all twisted up before it even happens. Yogimax, above, is right; you'll only hurt yourself!

What are the consequences of getting caught with liquor? Besides the inconvenience of going down to get your bags etc. They just confiscate the liquor and you are on your way with your bags correct?

Edit: Me and the GF bought 2 rum runner flasks and are also going to try it out.

For those worried about being called to the Naughty Room and wasting your time over things that are NOT prohibited..... Bring your soda and ALL of your liquids in your carry-on. Get a wheeled one so you can easily pull it along behind ya. They'll check it on the spot as you go through security, might take a few extra minutes. Then you'll walk right on with your allowed items. Simple.

So you would have to put them with your checked bags at the airport and them transfer them to your carry on before boarding the ship.

One more time. Is anyone tried Rum Runners?

Have been successful on other cruise lines. There are ways to pack them, & of course pockets.

Might just try the carry on this time.

But people who follow the rules are punished, too. Is RCI to the point where all liquids are suspect? Pity if so.

Not that big of a deal, really. Just have them all in one travel bag and swap it out with something from your carryon (not something valuable, though).

I have taken my friend Jack on every cruise I have ever been on. RR work well. I also have learned the trick of putting a 16 oz RR in my cargo pants pocket and walking on board without any problem.

If you get caught, they will take the alcohol and send you on your way. Personally I have never known anyone who had been caught but have read posts here on CC of those who usually reported they knew someone. You know the story a friend of a friend of a friend of mine got caught! OK.

As for the so-called naughty room, you can only be embarrassed if you allow them to do it to you. It would not bother me in the least if I ever did get caught. It is a stupid rule about as intelligent as the old 55 MPH law here in the US and yes I was caught several times breaking it.

I don't think their alcohol policy has anything to do with customer safety, otherwise all cruise lines would prohibit it. I have no plans to bring on alcohol but I will be really peeved if they retain my case on the presumption that my shampoo or other similar container has alcohol in it and I have to queue for an hour to prove its innocence. :(

The cruise line must look at all the luggage. I don’t want some “cruisers” bringing firearms and explosives so they can take over the ship.

If the cruise line is going to use the necessary screening for weapons to also look for alcohol, they should dedicate enough cruise line employees to prevent long lines.
