How would an East Coast Port Strike affect the Cruise Passengers (Updated 12/28/12)

I am seeing more each day about a potential strike by dock workers along the East Coast including all the ports normally used by Celebrity. How is this likely to affect the ships and passengers? I would guess all the handling of supplies and on/off loading of luggage would be affected but really am just guessing. Any ideas?

According to some reports I've read in the press, the strike would not affect cruise ships as well as certain types of cargo operations. It appears to be aimed at container operations.

You are correct it is against the container operators.

BUT the management group is meeting this Thursday to decide whether to lock out the union all together.

If this happens every port from Maine to Texas would be closed as the ILA will not be allowed on the piers to work. Thus cruise ships would be affected

Here is a report from the Jacksonville Florida newspaper and it states cruise ships will not be affected. http://jacksonville.com/business/2012-12-20/story/east-coast-ports-may-face-strike Scroll down and read the fourth paragraph from the end of the story.

Also, one of our Cruise Critic editors heard from Carnival that they do not anticipate any interruption to cruise operations.

One problem though is that while the Longshoreman's Union say the strike will not bother cruise ships, the question is... will OTHER unions cross the picket lines. In a few other strikes, Teamsters and other union workers would not cross the picket lines. And there are reports the strike will include workers from Florida to Louisiana as well.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting a possible lockout which would shut down all the ports from Maine to Texas.

The management group is to meet this Thursday to decide whether to lock out the ILA or not.

Would a strike deny disembarking? The cruise ships need to arrive before they can depart again right?

Like worrying about an impending snow storm mid week that may effect me getting to Ft Lauderdale, now I have to worry about a strike?:(

The Baltimore Sun article linked above says this:

The port has been in contact with two cruise lines that have ships coming in next weekend. Enchantment of the Seas should be able to discharge and take on passengers Saturday, Dec. 29, before the deadline. But Carnival Pride, due in Sunday, Dec. 30, could do neither in the event of a lockout, and Enchantment of the Seas would have no return port in a prolonged lockout.

:eek: Containers are one thing. Totally disrespecting fellow workers enjoying a vacation is another matter completely!!!

I sure hope Host Anne's report that the labour issue won't infringe on peoples long awaited for Holiday Vacation plans.

The problem for cruises is not the strike but the potential lockout.

If I read correctly, it actually kicks in early Sunday morning so my Eclipse Saturday departure should be safe.

Crossing my fingers for Sunday and later departures.

The Federal Mediator has asked both ILA and management to meet before the Dec 29 the deadline. Both sides have agreed to this request the date time and place will not be announced per the mediators request
