Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Two recent and major engine room fires does make me wonder if there's a problem at Fincantieri. If there is, it impacts the whole corporation, not just Carnival Cruise Line. Fincantieri is a major builder for other brands under the Carnival umbrella, and many of the ships share a same basic hull and design.

Very true

I am one of those people. I will be sailing on Carnival in 12 days and I can't wait!!

No one is in danger right now. They have food and drink. They have 3 extra days to sit on the Lido looking at the beautiful ocean. Carnival is compensating them very, very well. A bad day at sea is better than a good day at work, cold and snow. Crap happens. Just go with it.

You have no clue. They will be having 3 miserable days. And you are wrong about no one being in danger.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH - Update

February 10, 2013 – 7.30PM EST

This morning the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. At this time, the fire is fully extinguished. There were no casualties or injuries to guests or crew. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The ship's technical crew has determined the vessel will need to be towed to port. A tugboat is en route to the ship's location and will tow the vessel to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship’s current location. This will enable us to disembark guests and get them home as quickly as possible. The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso Wednesday afternoon and guests will be flown from there back to the U.S.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board. Guests are being provided with food and refreshments. Another Carnival ship, the Carnival Elation, is currently on scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph.

We have contacted the designated emergency contacts for all guests presently on board Carnival Triumph. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 888.290.5095 or 305.406.5534.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

The next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart Monday, February 11 and Saturday, February 16 are being cancelled. Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 percent discount on a future three to five-day cruise. Carnival is in contact with impacted guests to advise them of the situation.

The current Carnival Triumph voyage departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday, February 7 and was scheduled to return on Monday, Feb. 11.

I wonder how people without passports are going to fly back.

Have you ever, ever heard of any cruise ship passengers being left in another country when things like this happen???

Carnival said you didn't need a passport to cruise.

The Carnival cruise ship is unable to cruise.

Carnival said they will fly "ALL PASSENGERS" back home.

Don't you think Carnival or any other cruise line would tell their passengers that they "HAVE" to bring a passport in case of emergencies before they cruise?

THINK!!!!

Maybe you should go look up the laws.

Well this sucks for their vacation, but nice compensation. I'm sure everyone is taken care of that medically needs electricity and as for all others, it will be an adventure later to tell over and over again. The situation is not great but highly survivable, really, no different than being stuck with no power for a week or two when a hurricane hits us.

I remember when Andrew hit, I traveled (work) to Miami to help out a sister hospital that had been hit. We relieved other workers for 72 hrs straight who had been working nonstop.

It was 115 degrees inside the hospital, only generators, so yes you relieved yourself in dirty toilets, at least on ship you have a HUGE ocean to disperse of, we had no ice, cold food, no showers and we VOLUNTEERED for this. :p

Best wishes for all and that everyone get's home safe.

It's all in the attitude!

REALLY??????????

Besides it is New Orleans as home port 6hrs away from Galeston

How would they choose the pax to hop on the Elation

Would it be the Bingo winner or would it be a lottery

Would the winner sell it to the highest bidder

Nope.....Carnival would package it neatly and charge $5,000 and call it Faster To Galveston (FTG) ;)

There are no facts about the most recent incident so labeling it a "major engine room fire" is perhaps a bit premature. According to reports the fire was small. Loss of propulsion is a concern but with no injuries reported and the ship capable of power generation I think waiting for an actual incident report would be prudent.

Suggesting that this fire might be indicative of a design or construction flaw also seems imprudent. For all we know the fire may well have been as a result of several small human errors. I for one am going to wait until more is known before wondering if the Carnival fleet or engine room protocols are troubled.

Come on people be happy no one has died and that the ships is still afloat....instead of bashing Carnival, think and pray for the company to get the tug there and get the passengers taken care of......especially the elderly and sick. I have been on this save cruise 3 times in 2012 and she was great. We enjoyed everything about Triumph......When you run a ship 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year you will have issues......look how many passengers are safely handled fleet wide without incident in a week, percentages are pretty favorable for carnival and other lines......you will have issues and when you do it is usually unavoidable......I hope for all on board they can practice patience and can avoid health issues with no running water and restroom issues......no one got on this ship or cruise line hoping for this to happen and we should all hope and pray for a quick and favorable outcome...

Cruise ships provide cruises, not transportation, so TSA has no authority. Security plans do have to be approved by the Coast Guard.

Two free cruises plus free drinks and other compensation is way beyond fair.

All fires at sea are investigated.

Sure it's fair. However, one incident would be one thing, but this begs the question of why does this keep happening?

All the experts here and we have yet to get confirmation that they have no power, no hot food, etc. Only the assumptions so far.

Appreciate that Carnival overcame a devastating fire aboard the Ecstasy when she was based out of Florida. They tried to fight the fire themselves and delayed calling for help, even with the ship in the proximity of port.

Do you not think they learned something from this? Their success has made them targets when things go wrong.

These passengers are perhaps uncomfortable, and I feel deeply sorry for them. Wednesday is a long time away while not having the amenities they had for the first three nights at sea.

The Triumph has 4 generators that power 2 electric engines aboard. We have yet to learn just how much AC power is lost and what capabilities they have aboard. The lack of direct communication does suggest those services might be affected. Yikes.

The largest cruise line in the world will recover. They have before. Those fantasy class ships sail full every week, and the Triumph has done well here in Galveston.

Really? And why is that? Quite basic to parallel their grids after you connect. You would need some transfer switches along with sync and protective relays of course. Also have to have the proper programming mode set up for the governor and sequencer. They use 4 power cables and a neutral.

PLEASE STOP!!! There's a lot more to it than that. If it was as easy as that don't you think cruise lines would have service type boats available to go and do that when ever needed?

BTW, power systems are either 3 wire or 4 wire plus ground.

Events happen. That is life. No one injured, no one died. Carnival is stepping up to the plate. Nothing to look at here. Move it along folks.

Another ridiculous post. There is plenty to look at and I for one hope that Carnival Corporation is raked across the coals for their number of mishaps.

Agree, jumbie. Boaterette, since it bothers you so much the soltion for you is simple, Don't click on the Thread. Quite simple. That allows you to "Move along" Try it.

Yeh and that Tom Hanks guy in that castaway movie...Why didn't he realize Fedex gave him a free trip to a tropical paradise when he could have been toiling away in

Memphis.
