Crew Smoking Area

Sorry to start yet another smoking thread, but couldn't find answer in SEARCH function.

I seem to recall the HAL crew has an outside smoking area. I believe it is on Deck 6, port side on all/most HAL ships.

Can anyone refresh my memory? Is it located forward on the ship?

Thanks in advance for any help.:)

Crew is not allowed to smoke inside their cabins!

Every HAL ship has an interior crew smoking room on a 'crew only' deck

Only crew with officer's status can smoke on an outside deck where smoking is approved and ashtrays are provided

I believe that is the casino! :D

The casino isn't always open when someone wants to smoke.

A smoker must also be actively gambling to smoke in there. Not every smoker wants to gamble.

The casino can't truly be termed an "indoor smoking area for passengers".

That Smoking Room for crew is there because it is the only area crew, below officer status, has to smoke. I should also add that for a year now, HAL has been/is providing a 'Dam Quit' program which assists crew who are interested to stop smoking period

Copper 10-8

Glad to hear about the program being available.

Ruth,

True about the casino, but I know there are folks who are willing to put a few quarters worth of pennies into the machines to sit there long enough for a cigarette. Maybe they will even get some pennies back.

No one can sit in the Casino and smoke when the Casino is closed, and not everyone wants to make donations in there. If the Casino were to be considered an indoor smoking area for passengers, then smoking would have to be allowed in there 24/7, without regard to gambling.

At best, the Casino could be considered a part-time smoking area, with restrictions.

Hey maybe this program can spread to the Daily Program and let HAL ramp up their smoking ban!

I stand corrected but perhaps the :D meant I was speaking in jest. Sorry to be unclear. My bad!

Last November, the crew smoking area on the Prinsendam seemed to be near the forward stairs.

Yeah...actually its a real problem on the Prinsendam for some passengers. The crew smoking area is located near the bottom of the forward passenger stairway and the smell of smoke floats up the deck above (passenger cabins) and seems to sucked down the port side corridor. We have had cabins in that area and never smelled the smoke in our cabin...but as soon as we walked out of the cabin the smell was not nice.

Do they allow smoking throughout the ship ?

With the exception of the Oak Room (dedicated enclosed smoking room, with outdoor access), the casino is the only indoor passenger smoking area on any HAL ship.

Good for HAL. I quit smoking 17 months ago after smoking 54 years. I'm really proud of myself and now love cruising without having a nicotine fit and hanging out at the Seaview Bar. I have no problem with the crew smoking but don't feel I should have to smell it on them like I did in the MDR on the Zuiderdam this past May at Main late seating. They should not be allowed to smoke just before going on duty.

There was talk that crew quarters would be altered in the November 2013 Prinsendam dry dock. I do not know if the crew smoking area was moved. Does anyone?

I don't think smoking is allowed in the Oak Room.

It's definitely not allowed in the Prinsendam Oak Room, but I'm not sure about on the Noordam's O.R. In 3 cruises on the Noordam I've never seen anybody in there (besides me & DH) and never smelled stale smoke.

RuthC,

Wow, I did not expect that reply from you!

I was only reporting what I personally experienced on a recent cruise. More than once a passenger came into the casino, played about 5 minutes on a "penny" machine near mine, had a cigarette and then left. I honestly do not know if it was the same woman or different women. There was so little smoking in the casino on that cruise that I guess I was perhaps sitting in the smoking area. I personally have been a non-smoker for almost 50 yrs.

Considering that the only time the Casino is closed is when in port (or just before or after), it is in fact opened 24/7 for the slots.
