Is There a Polite Way to Say This?

I'm not advocating or disagreeing with washing hands afterwards I just think before is better as there are more germs than after in my opinion. I agree with some points on the info u wrote and I typically don't touch the public toilet and a lot of restrooms here in Vegas ( in casinos ) are open so there is no door in or out except the bathroom door and as you stated , yes there are probably germs there. So maybe the answer is to wash before and after

I lost it on a recent cruise when I queued behind a woman at the buffet. When she moved a tad I saw she had no plate, no utensils and immediately picked something up and take a nite while there. I did verbally gasped and said, oh please don't do that. Use the tongs and put it on a plate. She turned, hopefully somewhat embarrassed and said, it's okay I picked it from the top.

So FYI, that makes it okay. Whatever planet she comes from.

You touched it, there is not a lot of difference in picking it up. Nobody wants a plate you touch.

Seriously? When you pick up a plate from the top of a stack of plates with your freshly sanitized hands, do you not brush your fingers against the next one in the stack? Actually, it's probably your (not so freshly sanitized) fingernails that brush up against the next one in the stack.

Touching the backside of a single plate with a sanitized finger is not an area where the next person will pick up anything. Most people carry the plate by it's edge, where your aforementioned fingers have brushed against it.

We need to keep this in perspective here, and not go all phobic on each other.

I don't touch others plates or pick up food and eat it or touch others food or sneeze on food etc and it's not because I'm worried about germs. It's because I respect that other people don't want a stranger doing any if this to their food. Sadly in our society today alot of people only think of themselves and not others. If we all just respected other people more threads like this wouldn't happen but I guess that's too much to ask for on today's selfish world :(

Ok, I´ll give you that Point, but it still wouldn´t get you anywhere:p

Pheewwww, I´m glad to be part of such an exclusive group of cruisers:cool:

I will, I certainly will.

I like you, Paul. You've got some stones and a good sense of humor. Two things I always appreciate.

Good stuff.

Polite: "Please don't do (insert offending action). It is unsanitary and could cause others to get sick. Thank you"

Snarky: "Hey, why don't you act like a human?"

Rude: "Stop being a disgusting slob!"

So, yes, there is a polite way. Whether you use it, or say anything at all, that's another matter entirely.

Valid points. I'm usually in the don't day anything at all category.

I deal with conflict for a living. I don't need to get my blood pressure up during my relaxing vacation.

I usually just take the high road, shake my head, and move on.

Hi right back at you! How are things? When is the next sailing??:)

Things are going well, thanks. How about with you? It's getting awfully cold here :(

Going on the Vision in May so I've got a bit of a wait. Are you guys still doing Allure? What's the latest on the propulsion problems?

Things are good. It is getting cold here also. I had to cover a football game Friday night and I was miserably cold. I am still booked on Allure but I keep toying with cancelling because RCI isn't coming clean with any info. But Friday night I didn't care. I just want to be in the Caribbean where I always find peace.... and HEAT.:)

Add me to the list of those that use their foot to flush, and never mind the fact that I darn near lost a shoe a time or two. Now, that would have been a sight to behold for the next user. Back to the OP: some folks are just plain nasty, in more ways than one.

Thanks. Leaving all your gross foot dirty for those of us who use our hands to flush!

All this seems excessive. If I think about all the shared items we touch, from shipping cart handles to stairway hand rails and on and on I'd go crazy!!

Even that long"helpful" post about why we wash hands in the bathroom made no sense - it referenced the germs left on faucets, handles, etc. - which you wouldn't touch if you didn't wash your hands! Sigh.

(I have taken to opening bathroom doors with my elbow or a towel, though... and I try not to touch handrails in stairways onboard... I'll touch up light switches and tv remotes when I first move into a cabin but not each day afterwards... that's about it... I don't freak out at how everything in the promenade sales has been touched by everyone else, etc.)

Now if us guys could just learn how to "hover".;)

My architect friends are learning to specify doors that open out or no doors at all in group toilets. Or, they put a trash can within reach so once you open the door, you can toss the towel away. Also we specify sensor operated faucets and toilet valves.

On a high tech note, the latest hand dryer technology is to draw air into the hand dryer through a HEPA filter, then slice the water off with 400 mph blast of air, not heated air. That way you are using highly filtered air to blow the water off your hands. The old fashioned heated air method promotes bacteria growth while blowing unfiltered toilet room air on your hands. And of course all those paper towels are bad for the environment.

Not looking to start a fight...

Do you eat carrots? Do you eat corn? Do you eat peas? How come we do not run out? Because they grow them every year. The same is true of trees.....yes, for paper....it just takes longer to grow.....more of the US is under forest that hundreds of years ago.....Every tree cut, 3 are planted.

The demogogs that blast the nation with false information, to serve their own purpose have won the day, they have convinced intelligent people that flat out lies are truths.

As for manners in the buffet or the restroom....The factor any and all cruise lines use is...is the cruise paid for....No where in the documentation is there a clause requiring people to have manners.

The operative problem today: Stupid people. Note, not ignorant, those folks lack knowledge, stupid people know what is best and ignore it.

Let's face it, a cruise ship is no place for a germophobe, and I am one of those people! We all know there's a little johnny who just had his finger up his nose, or an oversized big suzie who had a wedgie right before getting in line at the buffet. And I still manage to finish almost my whole plate. It's that, or eat at home.

One of my pet peeves is the fact that restaurants go to some length to make sure the tables are wiped properly and dishes and silverware are clean. Not once have I ever seen a restaurant employee wipe off the salt & pepper shakers.

There's no fixing stupid. Not even with duct tape.

Cathy

I've seen workers wipe salt and pepper shakers along with ketchup and bbq sauce bottles that sit on the table. Not sure how clean the towel they use is though.

As I've mentioned in other recent posts, I'm a generally happy, roll with the punches, glass is half full kind of guy.

But there was one thing on our last few cruises that was really driving me crazy (and I saw it numerous times on my cruise last week)-- the seemingly complete ignorance by a small but noticeable percentage of cruise passengers of the fact that it's not acceptable to shove your hands in your mouth and/or lick your fingers immediately before grabbing a serving utensil in the Windjammer.

Seriously people?? Are you THAT hungry that you just had to jam that pastry/ piece of bacon/etc in your mouth? Are you going to run out of energy during the 30 foot walk to your table?

And are you so rushed that you couldn't unfold the green cloth napkin that is IN YOUR HAND as opposed to engaging in an oral act with your finger that would get you an NC-17 rating if it were filmed??

It absolutely blows my mind. It's amazing that there aren't more illness outbreaks on cruise ships.

That's all. Just a little conversation starter/venting session.

I feel better already... :)

That is one of the reasons my DH and I try to be the first people on line for any buffet- we prefer the dining rooms or restaurants. Some people have very poor hygiene habits. Have been to ladies rooms and witnessed people not washing their hands. My DH also advised me that the same holds true in the men's room!.

Oh well, there are a couple of very simple solutions for people who are concerned about germs on a cruise ship.

1. Don't Cruise!

2. Find a cruise line where you can cruise alone! I think it's called The Robinson Cruise-so Line. :D

Or, maybe... and I'm just spit balling here...

We could expect grown adults to exhibit civilized behavior and not be complete slobs.

I know. I like to dream big.
