Hi seasoned cruisers. Myself, DW, DD4 and DD7 will be cruising for the first time in January aboard Carnival Legend. If you can only share one piece of advice that you think is essential and all cruisers must absolutely know. What would it be ?

Thanks for taking the time to educate us novice cruisers :)

MDR. If you like 3 appetizers on the menu, order all 3. If you like two dinners, order both.

You don't have to do everything! There's always another cruise.

I'll second that. Each evening, you'll get the Fun Times paper delivered to your cabin, with a list of all of the following day's on board activities. Don't try to do everything, or you'll wear yourselves out. Allow yourselves time to just relax and be lazy bums for a while. Try to make your vacation as relaxing and stress free as possible.

On port stops, if you get off the ship, make sure you are back in the ship more than 30 minutes PRIOR to its schedule departure time or you will get left behind.

The most important thing to remember is that any advice you receive from other more experienced cruisers is exactly that--advice! Not an order, ultimatum, edict or rule of law. Once you are onboard you will find what aspect of cruising delights you the most, and stick with it. Do not ever second guess any of your decisions--choice of cruiseline, ship and cabin class; dining preferences; favorite activities; what you choose to do in port; or anything else--based on what you read on this or any other anonymous message board!

That was exactly what I was going to say ... especially in ports.

People often plan to do way too much in ports and end up not fully enjoy any of them because they are so rushed.

I can do two of those three. It's the last one I have the problem with

If you don't drink alcohol and you just stroll around at ports, or make your own excursion reservations you don't have to spend much more money and still have a great time. Heck my S&S bill was less than 80.00 and that was auto-tips and we had such a great time we are going back.

Bring along lots of smiles, a good attitude and an open mind and you will have a great cruise.

Don't go in with expectations of what you think a cruise should be, go in with

the idea that this is a new adventure. :)

In every port always know when you are supposed to be back on the ship and head that way a little earlier. Most of all enjoy all the new things you are going to see and do! :D

Welcome to the wonderful world of cruising.

Don't forget patience and manners.

Have a great time.

Wow, this must be the most helpful advice on the boards. I don't know what it is about a lot of people, but travelling seems to bring out the worst some people...

I hope you don't mind me asking a question in your forum but is it cash only in Carnival's casinos?

I am hoping some of the people can answer this. I didn't find my answer when I searched Carnival's website & someone told me we can just charge all of our casino spending on our sign & sail card. This really makes a big impact on how much cash a person has to bring on a cruise!

Bring a small stash of common over-the-counter medications. It's expensive to buy these things on board or in ports (if you can even find them). You know your situation, but I bring a small quantity of meds for: headache, cold, heartburn, nausea, anti-diahrrea, etc. You know your life and your needs, so pack what you think you might need - not a lot, just a little of each, to tide you over.

If you're flying...come in a day early

Take some time to enjoy being on the ocean....pull up a deck lounger and just watch the beautiful blue water and think how blessed you are to be on a cruise.

My first advice to anyone planning a cruise is to arrive at their embarkation city ahead of time. The night you stay at a hotel near your port is worth it. The morning of your cruise, you're there and refreshed, and not stressed out hoping your flight will be on time.

I know one! I know one!

There really are no stupid questions. If you wonder about anything, if something happens you do not understand, ask someone. The crew on a cruise ship knows they are dealing with a huge range of guests - everyone from former crew to 10,000 hour cruise-a-holics to newbies who have even seen the ocean before - and - at least on every cruise I have taken - they are glad to answer questions or find someone who knows the answers. So, if you got 'em, ask 'em.
