klfrodo Posted January 9, 2014 #26 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Why did they throw out CNN? Are they that out of touch? Your comments are a perfect example of why they will most likely do away with both CNN and FOX. The fans of both networks can't play together very well. Even if it's for a couple of hours. EnTnSA Posted January 9, 2014 #27 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Maybe a forward view live from the bridge with some steel drum music in the background. Agree, this was annoying on our last cruise on the Dream. Hung out at the aft pool most of the time because of this. I agree. We very rarely hang out at the main pool on Lido. Typically wayyy to loud, and wayy too crowded.
halos Posted January 9, 2014 #28 Share Posted January 9, 2014 It's just one of those now numerous things, that makes cruising very much less like cruising. I hate them, loud or not loud.
minivintage Posted January 9, 2014 #29 Share Posted January 9, 2014 To the person who asked about the Olympics on the Jumbotron--I was on the Splendor during the Summer Olympics in 2012. I watched the Opening Ceremonies on the Lido on the Jumbotron with other fans--one of my BEST memories of the trip! At one point, the staff switched to a scheduled movie--there was a loud collective SCREAM from everyone in the Lido and they went right back to the Opening Ceremonies. Other than the opening ceremony, you pretty much had to go to the sports bar or your room to watch anything else; I don't recall any Olympic events on the Jumbotron, at least when I was around. awhcruiser Posted January 9, 2014 #30 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Is the Jumbotron area the only place to watch a ship go into or leave a port?
repo-cruiser Posted January 9, 2014 #31 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Yes, they did for us on the Lido deck Jumbo. One thing is the Dream is NOT set up well at all for watching sporting events. They have the Lido and then the casino bar (1/2 smoking- 1/2 non-smoking). Otherwise they did set up the Burgundy Lounge one mid-day for the Rose Bowl. You don't have much else. They also carry ESPN_Caribbean - ? Not regular ESPN (but reg. ESPN 2). I only know this because there was not 1 TV on the ship the carried the Ohio State/Clemson bowl game. The Ohio State fans were going bonkers. I would too. The version of ESPN they carried had on a Dallas Mavericks NBA game that night? I would have preferred the Dallas Maverick game over watching Ohio State choke another Bowl game. Go Mavs! gracie65 Posted January 9, 2014 #32 Share Posted January 9, 2014 I don't like it loud but certain things like football, movies when it's dark etc are ok. Just wish it wasn't on so much during the day would prefer the steel drum bands while laying out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Prphan2 Posted January 9, 2014 #33 Share Posted January 9, 2014 If there was a football game on I bet there would not be a complaint... (the exception to this is if there are 2 different games going at same time and the other game is the one you wanted to watch) i don't watch it and I could careless.. but no complaints from me. Yes at times there will be things on the Jumbtron that someone does not like, now we are coming up to the winter Olympics and the requests are coming in ... are we going to be able to watch them on the jumbotron. Sorry it bothered you so much but you can not please everyone.... It's not about what's on, it's about the extremely LOUD volume!!! Read the original post... Aplmac Posted January 9, 2014 #34 Share Posted January 9, 2014 It's not about what's on, it's about the extremely LOUD volume!!! Read the original post... Yes it's the Volume on the Audio, not the visual content! You shouldn't have to "tune-out" the NOISE. You shouldn't have to escape it, and invent work-arounds and alternative places to avoid what is essentially noise pollution! By all means please show big events like Olympics and big ball games we have nothing against that but geez Louise, it's the incessant never-ending noise-blather that most folks are objecting to. Is anyone in charge of this??? .
hattack Posted January 9, 2014 #35 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Interesting....on our Jazz Charter, the jumbo screens are only on when there is a concert activity on the lido deck or main showroom, , the NFL Tailgate Party, very late night film festival or a Thursday Night Scandal (tv show party) Rest of the time Jumbo screen is turned off and we hear Jazz streamling live on Capital Jazz Radio So it can be turned off
BenjiRodney Posted January 9, 2014 #36 Share Posted January 9, 2014 Never found it to be too loud on any ship I have been on, Glory, Victory twice or the Valor, I find it is a nice distraction while waiting to disembark for a tour.
ready2cruzagain Posted January 9, 2014 #37 Share Posted January 9, 2014 It was so loud on the Conquest last month that you could not even carry on a conversation! I hate it and cannot figure out why it has to be so loud. We were on the beach at Mahogany Bay and you could hear the thing blaring while on the beach! Ridiculous to have it that loud! rs12065 Posted January 9, 2014 #38 Share Posted January 9, 2014 I just posted a review of our 12/29-1/5 sailing on the Valor. One of our main complaints was that damn Jumbotron. You could not carry on a conversation anywhere near it on the pool deck and are forced to listen to the port shopping show and the idiotic chatter of the Cruise Directors' early morning closed circuit TV show. To respond to one poster here...no, the pool deck area isn't the only area to view sailaway or coming into a port, but why should passengers be forced to find another area to do so because the Jumbotron is usually acting like one big unbelievably loud Carnival commercial? Butterbean1000 Posted January 10, 2014 #40 Share Posted January 10, 2014 honestly, it doesn't bother me that much. We don't hang out on lido that much. We're either just passing through, serenity or inside the ship. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Rare crewsweeper Posted January 10, 2014 #41 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Why did they throw out CNN? Are they that out of touch? it was one thing back when HLN and CNN were reporting news. Now that they're 24/7 repeat opinion programs or self infatuated talking heads, I hold no interest and I'm not out of touch. CNN's ratings are almost a bad a MSNBCs menaing no one else is watching either. I would have preferred the Dallas Maverick game over watching Ohio State choke another Bowl game. Go Mavs! Off topic...I'm sure you still held that preference after the "choking" the Mavs had against the Spurs the other night.:D Back on topic. I'm deaf and the noise off the Jumbotrons is way too loud for me in the early mornings. But that's why I use a streamer for my iPod and let my own playlist come directly to my ears. I always thought that they didn't turn the volume down from the previous night's activities. In part the loudness in the morning is due to the lack of people and competing noise fro other activities. There's a building hum of noise that naturally comes in any environment as more people are present. Restaurants and bars are notroious for this. Music is going to be loud. Movies and sports are going to be loud. Daytime activities are going to be loud. All are loud because of the number of people and competing noise present. asalligo Posted January 10, 2014 #42 Share Posted January 10, 2014 I have always avoided the ships with the large screen on the Lido. I cannot imagine much they could play on it that would not be an intrusion on my vacation. I do not need a TV in the room or the deck.
Rare richstowe Posted January 10, 2014 #43 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Sorry it bothered you so much but you can not please everyone.... It's not about what's on, it's about the extremely LOUD volume!!! Read the original post...It is odd and ridiculous when the volume is cranked up and playing to absolutely no one.We were on a Glory cruise this summer sailing through heavy heavy fog. You could see the giant glowing screen but it was more then odd. The pool desk was absolutely deserted. The giant screens are OK but lower volume and more limited hours would be even more OK. vwrestler171 Posted January 10, 2014 #44 Share Posted January 10, 2014 I guess that I've been lucky. In my. 2 cruises with the seaside theater, we didn't have any issues with the volume.
winddawn Posted January 10, 2014 #45 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the nonstop noise from the Jumbotron (or whatever Carnival calls it)? Yesterday we were pulling into beautiful St. Thomas on a lovely morning - most of the pax were lining the decks, admiring the scenery - and blaring from the Jumbotron was an episode of Everyone Loves Raymond, soundtrack - and laughtrack - blaring at full volume. Really? Is that necessary? How about the sound of silence so we can appreciate the beauty of the ocean, the scenery? There was not a single person watching the episode, but many complaining of how intrusive and annoying it was. Please Carnival, use that stupid thing a little more wisely. (I realize I'm a cranky 50 year old, and it will be used more than I would like - which would be never - but it doesn't have to always be blaring!) How do others feel on this one? The only thing I've ever seen on the big Lido screen that interested me was a Kenny Chesney DVD show on Sunshine on New Year's Day. Sunshine was parked next to Conquest in port, and you couldn't even hear the Sunshine big screen because the screen blaring on Conquest next door was so loud. It is very annoying and obtrusive. And yes I agree. Carnival needs more Calypso/island music at reasonable volume levels.

I wish the Splendor would schedule their Latin live band to play in the LIDO. Those guys are too good to be tucked away in the Robusto Bar where there are too few people frequenting it. askimdog Posted January 10, 2014 #47 Share Posted January 10, 2014 I also have never been on a ship with one. Don't think I would either, don't have TV at home, don't want it on a ship. I admit, I may go watch sports in a sports lounge a bit, but overall it seems silly to have that thing loud enough for others who care less for that sort of thing. I got rid of the cable bill and the TV 13 years ago....life has been better.
fourkittys Posted January 10, 2014 #48 Share Posted January 10, 2014 We have spoken about this repeatedly and at lengthbut it falls on deaf ears. Carnival wants you to have fun, even if it kills you. Or deafens you! They're going to stuff their noise down your ears, dammit! I've been out on Lido at 0600 hrs. when I'm the only one around, and that stupid Noise Machine is going full pelt, catering to absolutely no-one! You wonder if anyone's in charge!! Maybe Carnival wants to be tacky and low class! :) . [/quote Boy do I agree with you 100%. We have even heard it when we are on other cruise lines in port and it's disgusting. Talk about Walmart of the Seas and Red Necks, they are very close to this terminoligy especiall since Carnival lets our complaints fall on deaf ears. Is it too much to ask for them to show just a little class.
