OK, it is time to ask about the new smoking policy now in effect!

There is an interesting article in the health section of the TIME web site saying that smoking rates in the USA are down to 20%. If smoking levels were still at the 50% rate of 50 years ago then this change wouldn't have happened.

As the daughter of a wonderful man that died from a smoke related cancer I just hope the smoking rates keep going down… :):)

I believe the balcony "rule" is for the first cruise Start Date after January 1 so it would not have impacted your sailing. the next sailing on Jan. 5 should be no smoking on balconies.

That's what I assumed.

Interesting. Very interesting indeed. I didn't realize a definitive cause had been identified (albeit unofficial.)

Thank you for sharing.

According to the Captain on the Explorer this past week, at the Captains Corner event he was specifically asked if the cause of the Grandeur fire had been identified. His response was he knows there is talk of it being a cigarette, however the cause was NOT identified whether it was electrical, an oily rag or a cigarette. If he was being honest - they simply don't know what caused that fire.

more bullcrap from sherlock. lets just see how much trouble they have selling balconys. prob the same drop celebrity has from their nonsmoking casinos. none at all. oh and about your misinformation go ahead and cite your source for central ohip restaurants closing because smokers were not allowed. what a load of crap.

come on.. you are going to hurt my feelings.

frankly I could give a crap if RCI sells balconies or not but RCI does. I never hang around the casino so not sure why you bring this up. if you want to see central ohio stories google is your friend. the next thing you banning people will want is to get rid of the hookers onboard.

what world do you live in just in central ohio a whole lot of bar and grill type restaurants have gone under. most of the ones that have made it added on an outdoor patio aand use those umbrella type heater because a large percent of their business is out on the patio smoking while the inside sits empty.

all the people that currently rent balcony cabins and don't smoke will continue to rent and quit the constant complaining. the folks who rented a balcony so they could smoke will opt for the cheaper inside/ov cabins. so who's going to pickup the slack of the smokers?

I live in the real world where the vast majority of people do not smoke. Maybe they closed because of the economy. Or maybe in OH there are more smokers than there are in the DC area and that's your issue there. You think? Here in the DC area where the economy wasn't as impacted overall, that is not the case. And, sorry, smokers don't make up enough of the revenue on a cruise ship to have that much impact. Smokers will still cruise and Balcony cabins will still sell. I'm not even going to get into the fact that the more educated one is, the less likely they are to smoke and the DC area has a ton of college graduates. Either way, I don't think your opinion on the bars has anything to do with the smoking ban. It's been reported many times that the smoking bans had no negative impact on revenue. Just because you don't like the ban doesn't make it wrong.

There will be no "slack" as the cabins will still sell and the ships will and are sailing full. So, your "logic" lacks any foundation.

And, I too will report anyone breaking the rules as I suspect many would. That is not being a tattle-tale. That's a term a 5 year old uses.

I was on the Explorer in December and had a corner aft cabin. I loved it. They still allowed smoking on the balconies and that was fine, even though I usually mind the smoke. The thing I did mind was the fact that we would have cigarette butts on our balcony that weren't put there by us. I believe it came from someone on one of the higher decks throwing their butts off the balcony. I think this is disgraceful and illegal too. If you are going to smoke, at least use an ashtray. Of course, now that smoking is prohibited, this shouldn't be a problem..... But, there are always those that will smoke. I just hope they are careful what they do with their cigarette butts. Maybe that is what happened on the Grandeur.

how many times do you think RCI will need to hear that before a light goes on?

I do believe the light did go on. The majority of people today, know and understand the dangers of smoking, and the effects of second hand smoke on employees working in that environment so RCCL went with the majority and restricted smoking.

You can argue the economic merits, but the law makers worldwide are by the majority making the areas available to smokers smaller and smaller.

This is true. I was in Jamaica last month and was told they had recently implemented a ban on smoking in all indoor public places. It's happening more and more. And I for one, am glad about it. Now I can actually enjoy my balcony without my neighbor's smoke.

As the daughter of a wonderful man that died from a smoke related cancer I just hope the smoking rates keep going down… I'm with you on this maam...Like it or not, my prediction is that cruise ships will be smoke free within a few years..I smoked years ago , but wised up knowing it would probably kill me, especially after witnessing an uncle in a VA hospital bed clawing the air with pain till he died a horrible death. His fingers on his smoking hand were yellow from the Camels he had to have. I will surely get flamed here but do not really care. I think what smokers do not realize is that if you smoke, it really bothers people who do not. Those who do not smoke do not bother anybody. We were recently on the Triumph and first thing some guy below us had to have a cigar in his mouth 24/7. It ruined our extra large balcony experience.I applaud RCCL for making this decision and hope Carnival and others follow suit. Why should I risk getting cancer because of someone's addiction ?Someone mentioned the flicking of butts off their balcony. I have seen this numerous times..This is inexcusable even where it is legal to smoke on a balcony or anywhere else...Guess I have said enough . Bring on the flames...

...snip...the next thing you banning people will want is to get rid of the hookers onboard.

As long as they are in their cabins "plying their trade" who cares. Again how does someone having sex impact me? A smoker affects me directly as I have to deal with the stench. Get it?

We heard those overly dramatic claims when restaurants and bars banned smoking here, in the UK, Ireland and elsewhere but the facts just don't support it. The percentage of smokers in the US and elsewhere is getting smaller thankfully so the so-called negative economic impact of banning smoking isn't anywhere as bad as you choose to believe. When we go out to dine, I have yet to find the empty dining rooms you see. In fact, even at the height of the recession the restaurant industry seemed to weather the downturn remarkably well. In not too many years I believe that it will be difficult to believe that the ban was not instituted even sooner.

On Brilliance, as the week went along, the number and location of ashtrays in the designated smoking areas noticeably decreased. By the last day, there were only two left on the pool deck. On the smoking side of the promenade deck, there was only one left.

No doubt said ashtrays were finding their way to people's balconies. Maybe they need to bolt them down.

On IOS now.

Not doing a very good job enforcing it. Disappointed and mentioned it to the front desk as we can smell smoke on our balcony.

It is Up to the cabin Attendant to tell them the new rule or you to let front desk know if you smell smoke. Then they will deal with it. They Have to enter your cabin to see where it is coming from.

Old policy forms were in our cabin and no mention at Muster drill either. just there is no smoking in the cabins.

No other mention in the Compass or notice in the cabin.

We are b2b so see how the next cruise goes.....

I'm on IOS on the 18th . . this is NOT what i wanted to hear . . . . hope it gets better!

Anyone who throws ANYTHING from their balcony has to have their head examined

That is possible for the little ones on the tables, but the 3 foot tall free-standing ones were also disappearing:eek:

It doesn't seem logical that smokers got a balcony room just so they can smoke.

Anyone who throws anything from their balcony is risking being thrown off the ship at the next port. It is not tolerated at all.

I agree with you 100%. As a matter of fact, I stopped getting a balcony cabin BECAUSE of smokers, I'm so happy that I can enjoy the ocean again :D

Sure it does. If I were a smoker and allowed to smoke on my balcony, I would spend the extra fare so I wouldn't have to go to a public deck to do it. But if I'm not allowed to smoke on my balcony, I might decide that the extra fare isn't worth it because I'd have to go to a public deck to smoke and wouldn't spend the time on my own balcony.
