Would it be rude?

I pretty much just smile through the spiel and order what I already planned to. The "recommended" dishes are usually the ones they made the most of anyway. It's a way to make sure they don't have too much left. :D

We've had the new menu at least 3 times already and know what we like and don't like and how everything is served. We also always sit at a large table (8+) so it's not our decision whether or not to let him finish his recommendations.

Are the menus *always* repeated or might you be possibly missing something special if you can't take the 30 seconds to hear the updates? Saying, "I go on so many cruises I know it all by heart..." sounds kind of snooty to me :)

:rolleyes:Where did I say I know them by heart? Where did I say I don't listen? I specifically said, we do. You're reading what you want to into my post. Don't you think your post might be a bit rude?

Also, when you use quotation marks, you are saying that that's word for word what I said. It's not now is it?

And, there are a limited number of menus, something like 14, but the reality is on a 7 day cruise you get certain ones, on a 10 day, you get the 7 day plus 3 new ones, etc.

Oh, and in this PC, socialist world some want to live in, I guess I'm supposed to apologize for cruising as a vacation.

I didn't read where anyone said that, and if they did, doesn't sound snooty to me. Just sounds like someone who knows what they want.

What's wrong with that?

Sorry, I put the happy face hoping to indicate it was tongue in cheek. Didn't mean to offend. I guess my jealousy is showing.

Wow, I must admit to being one of the annoying people that haven't decided! I never, ever bother to check the menu before I go to MDR. I am so busy (or napping) and I just know they will have plenty I will enjoy. I never knew that was so annoying to other people I also like to hear the recommendation as I figure it is going to have good turnover, and also they wouldn't recommend something horrible as they wouldn't want the double trip to go back for another dish. I enjoy relaxing and reading the menu and discussing with our friends what we all think would be nice.

Different perspective on the same activity I guess.

I too never bother to check the menu before we go to MDR - I guess we are so busy enjoying our cruise. I also enjoy relaxing and reading the menu and discussing with our friends what we all think would be nice & interacting with the waiter about recommendations and choices.

As you say, a different perspective on the same activity. Perhaps some would prefer to select their menu choices for the entire cruise on-line ahead of time :D

Anyway, OP there is no problem with what you proposed.

I think you're misreading this thread. Who said it's annoying? It doesn't bother us at all, we just don't need the waiter to tell us their "recommendations". This thread was about whether or not it was rude to stop the waiter from giving his recommendations, not about those that want to hear it. One of my issues, is that the recommendations are overwhelmingly seafood and I'm allergic so it really holds no interest for me, plus as I said above most of them are items they're trying to push due to the amount they have and how well things are moving.

I think several posters are missing the point of this thread. This is not about having to know what is on the menu ahead of time at all.

I don't think it's rude, but it takes him <60 seconds to give his recommendations.

Usually they say, for the app I recommend x, for the entree, y, and for dessert, z. They don't go on and on describing them.

I've never had a waiter argue when I made my choice. I should have listened to them a few times, though. The same item can vary between ships.

Agreed. I, too, have with interest read the menus and know what I would order - probably for most nights. Think it would speed up his job. Personally, I find those who can't make up their mind rather annoying. After all, menus are posted so you can read them beforehand.

Psst...it's up there. ;)

I don't read the menus ahead of time because I like to go to dinner and be surprised. :) however I may have to change that when we sail the Allure as I need to know if we should dine elsewhere.

I have cut and pasted the menus to my ipad/phone so that we can check them from our cabin earlier in the day. Or we just take a look at them when we are checking out something else on one of the smart kiosks near the elevators. Or should I say my easy eating husband checks them out!

I have some serious food allergies to a couple of fishes, and some serious food avoidances to stuff I just don't like!! That really limits what I can order. For a seven night cruise I always end up with horseradish encrusted salmon (the one fish that I can eat), beef tenderloin, turkey, chicken marsala, and two other salmons, and one chicken off the everyday menu. Boring I know, but I literally have only one thing that I can eat on the menu each night. Hence not needing any kind of waiter recommendations! ;)

Well sure the OP can quite the waiter at any time and do it politely.

However, to pretend you know what the waiter is going to say, well we don't know what he is going to spiel. If he is going to spiel at all. He may be suggesting Lobster or something wonderful the Chef is testing and only a few waiters are allowed to serve it. The suggestions and introductions are also the time you can use to get to know the waiter.... he is usually too busy to talk once the meal has started.

Is the waiter told what to recommend by the chef or supervisor, or is he giving us his opinion?

On ocassion, we have questions about ingredients of some dishes. The staff has always been very knowledgable.

In my experience, they are giving you their opinion. They know what is popular and what gets sent back. Over many cruises, I think they have been pretty accurate. They aren't really trying to sell something; they want you to be happy.
