Trouble for Capt. on WC

I have been following several bloggers who are on the World Cruise. Their posts have been very informative and entertaining, each with their own style of writing and views. I am enjoying them but love reading Captain Jonathan Mercer's blog. His posts come from a totally different point of view as he Captain's the ship. You can read his posts at captainjonathandotcom.

Todays post gave another challenge for the captain and I'm waiting until he posts about the outcome. Here is what he wrote.

by Jonathan A day at sea today, we have the “Amadea” accompanying us, we are both making for Pago Pago although we are scheduled to arrive before her and are thus steaming at a slightly higher speed.

My day has been one of meetings and dealing not only with emails but other matters. I have almost 1,000 guests and over 600 crew on board and every now and then the law of averages dictates that one will have some sort of ‘personnel’ challenge.

My particular one is not a member of my crew, (I seldom have any challenges with them), mine is a guest. No names of course, not on this blog at least, although I am sure that guest ‘bloggers’ have already mentioned him. He is, how shall I put it, eccentric? Yes, that will do nicely.

He has bothered guests ever since we sailed from Florida and matters have come to a head insomuch that he now refuses to let his stateroom steward clean his room. That’s not all of it of course, there’s more, but not for these pages; I have a meeting arranged with him tomorrow, one which I am eagerly anticipating I may add.

The other bloggers have not mentioned this gentleman??? I wonder what the Captain will do..throw him off the ship at the next port, Maybe his family put him on the ship for the WC so they didn't have to deal with him for a few months.

I say that with tongue in cheek, sad for him and the passengers and crew he has acted out against. I wonder if the passenger will show up for the Meet and Greet with the Capt.?

Just a guess on my part  but I 'suspect' if the Captain requests a meeting with anyone aboard the ship, be it officer/crew/staff/guest, odds are really high that meeting will occur. ..... One way or another.

A shame it is necessary.

Back on the World Cruise s.s. ROTTERDAM 1995.

One passenger remained in cabin... never let him leave the cabin and never the steward clean it.

For over a week or ten the passenger stayed and did nothing but drink and send something through the door.

When the passenger put ashore... and into 'hospital'. The passenger had never in the bed for some days... NEVER.... not even to the toilet" Don't know what happened after he left but the cabin had to be completed redecorated.... new bed, carpets, furnishing etc.

Very sad.

Sad to the passenger on the present cruise. He should be either allow the steward to clean and either put him ashore. The cabin is property of Holland America, the passenger is just paying for the use of the space. If the steward is not cleaning then the result will be nothing than the furnished will be damaged and filthy for the next occuppant. Do you want to be in it? Or in the cabin next to it for THREE MONTHS?

Okay, now I'm REALLY curious...

Me, too! Not that it hasn't happened before, and maybe more frequently than I know, but we've only been on one cruise where a passenger, actually passengers in the one case I saw, were "invited" to leave the ship mid-cruise. That was several years ago on the Volendam and it involved a younger couple, in their late twenties/early thirties, who publicly had problems with over indulgence. After three or four nights in a row of really "in-your-face" public drunkenness that we witnessed they left the ship in St Martin with all their baggage. Interesting that a captain would comment, it must be more than just minor.

We had an incident on a HAL ship about 3 or 4 years ago. During Happy Hour.

4 young men can running into the Ocean Bar with towels wrapped around their wet bathing suits. They were screaming and yelling while drinking beer -- quite a few beers since it was at that time -- buy one bucket and get the other one half off. This went on for the entire hour. Security came right at the end and their were escorted away. The next day was a sea day. We were at the Ocean Bar for Happy Hour. Did not see the young men. But Security came several times -- walked through -- checking out everything.

I don't remember which port we stopped at the next day -- but they were gone.

And to think others may have blogged about occurances it must be fairly "public."

actually, none of the others that I am following have mentioned this person. The OP was wondering the same thing, why no on has mentioned it.

I will be curious to find out what happens. It must be pretty bad if Captain Mercer mentions it, even in the limited way he did.

I've been following all the blogs and haven't seen a mention of such a passenger. I imagine, therefore, the behaviour is not affecting most of the pax, just those in the immediate vicinity, and the crew.

Same thought here. Although I am surprised that the Captain mentioned it at all.

Perhaps this passenger is not bothering a lot of other passengers so they may be unaware of him but seems he is problematic enough for the captain to get involved.

I was happy to find Captain Mercer's blog. It was one I didn't know about. I have been following Jeff's blog, John and Diane's Blog and Treasures of the World blog. Any other's?

Esri is posting to this forum and to her "Go With Me".

We've got a couple months of great literature, eh?
