Boxed wine on X

I know you are allowed to bring two bottles of wine on board but do they allow boxed wine? I typically don't drink this but was asked by someone if they permit it and am curious. Thanks.

It's hard enough to chill a couple bottles of wine in those cabin fridges...not sure how you'd manage with a box...unless of course it's red and doesn't need chilling!

A friend told me that wine also comes in 500ml cardboard.

Take it out of the box, put the bladder in your carry on ( or in your checked luggage) walk on with it and add ice cubes in your room. Boxed wine actually tastes better with ice.

I will have to check that out. I can attest they are making more and more premium wines with screw cap bottles maybe premium in a box is next.

We were at a winery and as a joke I mention boxed wine and was told not to laugh as the wine snobs and expects are finding that wine keeps better in boxes because the bladder doesn't allow air in when pouring thus keeping it form becoming contaminated.

 

I have taken boxed wine on board as my allotment.

I brought 2, 1 litre tetra boxes of French Rabbit Chardonnay on Eclipse last spring without any issue. They are easy to store in the fridge (upright or on its side) and it's actually a very nice wine for $10ish.

A friend told me about a guy on his cruise who had tried just that, was called on the carpet, and the checker had the bladder leak as he was pulling it out of the passengers luggage. Guess where it landed. I have no desire to spend my cruise in wine stained clothes because of cheap wine.

As a professional wine judge (honest--see http://winejudging.com/bios/bob_foster.htm) let me comment that while box wines were originally mediocre at best, in recent years there has been a big jump in quality. The wines from Target and a brand called Black Box have been winning gold medals when judged blind against other U S wines at major competitions. Finally the plastic inner bag is not impervious to air. After a few months there will be air penetratrion.

We had no problems bringing 1.5 liter boxes on board in our checked baggage about a year ago. They may have clarified the policy at some point to define a bottle as 750 ml, but we had no problems.

I suspect the skill or interest level of the inspector enters into it. A $20 box wine might be worth the chance, but losing a $50+ bottle would hurt.

I've read comments by people who say cruise line employees are more strict than contractors. I have no idea if this is true. Maybe there's a bounty on the cap of every illicit bottle.:p

Why is it smuggling if your only bring the amount allotted on board. Does Celebrity specify how you are to bring your 2 bottles on board? Richard
