How close to sailing do prices drop?

I keep checking our 3/21 cruise prices and the prices keep going up and down but the promenade rooms seem to stay the same. Was hoping for a drop. They are more than the ocean views.

There is more to see. Ocean view, pretty much gives you an ocean view, promenade gives you hundreds of people to watch, parades, shops, etc. In all seriousness, everyone has their preference of cabins, but mine is definitely inside or promenade.

The answer to your question is some cruises the prices go down others do not. I have been on 2 of the probably 15 or so I have been on where the agents at the check in counter were telling people that there were about 30 cabins not sold and if we knew anyone that could be at the ship ready to go within 4 hours that the fare was $99 a person. We paid about $600 for an inside. We knew of several couples that would love to have gone but couldn't take the vacation time. Others we have asked about upgrading and the ship was completely sold out.

The price drops occur based on staterooms availability as they get closer to sail dates. More available in a given category, the more likely of a late price drop - but not guaranteed to happen. You may already be aware of this, but if there is a price drop and you are already inside the final payment window, you cant get a price drop or credit. You may be able to upgrade to a better category if it's within your booking price. BUT, recently the last minute price drops are part of the going, going gone sale which is restricted to new bookings only. I experienced this today on my upcoming 4/26 cruise. My final payment date was last week. Price drop today, but only for new booking.:( As I told my DW, we were happy with the price and room we got when we booked, so :D.

Our best buys, after final payment bookings, were at the 6-8 week mark. I have seen some really good deals at the 1-2 week mark as well. If we are booking after the final payment, I put price checkers out for the cruises we are interested in then they email me when the price goes down. (no I cannot post any information on here on how) It's worked really well a few times for us.

I just checked the prices on your cruise. I see the promenade at $809 and the H category cabin (ocean view) is also at $809. The OV category I is at $799 pp.

I'm not sure if you are interested in an OV but I see the same price right now.

Keep in mind, the closer you get to your sail date, less cabin choices you will have.

  • 1 month later...

So my 4/6 cruise just showed up on the Going Going Gone sale, and I would have saved a nice chunk if I had waited! Nothing I can do now, just gets to me to think that I paid hundreds more than someone else in the same category! Wish I had never looked! Sometime ignorance truly is bliss! :D

I am still happy to be cruising with Royal again after some years away, first time since they changed the rules about price drops. So this is new to me, but love Royal no matter what so all is good! I am calling them to check to be sure that my OBC is showing up, so will not hurt to ask them about any upgrades. But if not, it will still be a great cruise!

...and sometimes they go UP !!!:D

Happened with my last sailing in August... Booked a year out, climbed in fits and starts until about six weeks out when there were maybe a a dozen cabins JS and below left and I stopped paying any attention to it.

Would you mind if I emailed you reguarding the price checkers?

Thanks

The cruise i'm leaving on this weekend dropped over $100.00 after I made the final payment. I called my TA, she got RC on the line, they wouldn't honor the price drop but offered me an upgrade instead (oceanview to balcony) for such a good deal I couldn't pass it up.

If you don't mind me asking did you get the balcony for less than what the website was showing for the price? I'm leaving April 3rd on the Liberty and the prices have dropped since I made final payment. I'm not sure if I should call and see if I can upgrade for a small fee.

As others have stated Price Drops may or may not occur. In fact for our upcoming Santos(Sao Paulo) to Barcelona there were no price drops and we paid the best price possible. The price went up. So this depends on the sailing and supply and demand.

Let's say you have X amount of Staterooms at $800 and if this category is not selling as expected they would lower the cost to get the sailing as full as possible. The intention is to bring more passengers onboard to spend money in the casino, specialty dining, shops etc. If the sailing is close to full the cruiseline essentially has no incentive to lower the price.

Also a geographic sell could be going on in Brazil but not here in the USA.

You may get an upgrade or upsell and while its a nice perk the cruiseline hopes in return you will spend more money and time onboard.

If you got a good location and paid more for it then I would stay with your location. If you do get a price drop before final payment your location can change due to booking into a lower category.

A lot of people get excited to save $50 per person but then end up in the worst cabin possible.

So in the end you have to ask before you agree to the price drop what location will I be moved to if I accept this before final payment and what category can you upgrade me to after final payment.

If you are upgraded you may still be in an Oceanview but on a different deck. An upgrade is not always from an Oceanview to Balcony and this is where the confusion often lies.

Just my 2 cents.

I paid one price for an oceanview room and after my final payment it dropped so I called my TA. She added RC online and because it was past the final payment time frame they wouldn't give me a price adjustment or an obc, but they did offer me the upgrade to a balcony for a small fee.

Totally worth it for us. I'd say call your TA and see what he/she can do for you. Worse case scenario RC says no and you stay where you are. Good luck!
