Is anything else old or worn out on Jewel?

Recommended Posts

There are several excellent reviews with photos posted on recent Jewel sailings. Thank you all for those! Radiance class ships are our favorites but I noticed in some of the cabin photos that the TV's are "old school" and not flat screens. That amazes me. Even on some of Princess Cruises older ships the older TV's have been replaced.

Are you interested in Jewel? She is a beautiful ship, and the last one in the fleet with the Sea View Café. We thought she was sparkling when we sailed her although her refurb is not due until 2016, we hear. Please don't let an older TV prevent you from cruising Jewel.

OK OK.... one more reason to cruise Jewel.... shower doors (not curtains)! For the win! :D

We have sailed on other Radiance class ships but its been years ago. As mentioned, Radiance class ships are our favorite...really don't like the mega ships being built these days. Sailed on Allure...will not again. We are booked on b2b's on the Jewel in August. TV's not a cruise killer but was just wondering if the fact that they have not been replaced is indicative of other things getting a little "tired" as she moves towards refurb in 2016.

You sound exactly like me! Love Radiance class ships, will not sail Oasis/Allure again. We had a delightful and adventurous B2B on Jewel during Hurricane Sandy. We loved it! I know you'll have a great time. :)

Flat screen or CRT...the same shows! The cabins are so small, it doesn't make a difference! I'm amazed that anyone actually cares about the shape of the tv! You won't get Hi def...even if it's a flat screen!

We like extra space so we book OS. We done all the typical daytime and night activities and never do those.. Also on for two weeks so having a nice TV is good, not a a make or break the trip issue at all. We travel all the time and never expect things to be perfect. Having said that I do care about TVs and everything else that goes with a cruise that I pay for.

My wife found this video of an OS on Jewel. Looks like there is a flat screen TV after all. And the room appears to be in excellent shape. As mentioned we love these ships. We find them the perfect size and so elegant. Pumped to go in August!

Jewel is the youngest of the Radiance class ladies - so she is the last to do an "enhancement" dry dock. That's not all bad.

You lose "something" in the enhancements IMHO.

Obviously, my favorite class.

Sorry but I did see a few things. The sports bar next to the casino was in really rough shape and smelled awful due to the lingering cigarette smoke. The "cinema" had the same problem. All the soft goods smelled like an ashtray.

I know Jewel is a favorite around here and she was my first Royal cruise but I'm a fan of the newer ships so far.

I get the smokey part - but that's pretty much the last sports bar in the fleet (sorry - the English Pub is quaint - but soccer & hurling aren't my thing and don't make it a sports bar).

I have been on Jewel 4 times and sailing on her in two months. She has not had the extensive refurbishment yet. Last summer we sailed her and I thought she was holding up great. Service was wonderful and I LOVE that class of ship. Been on all the newer ones too.

With that said, the T.V.'s are being replaced with the flat screens as they need replacement. Most, I believe, are still the bulky tube ones. But they work. And if yours doesn't work, then complain and see if they replace it for you. Like everything they have stock rooms full of furniture, carpet, etc to do such emergency replacements.

May I add....enjoy the Jewel and get out of the cabin and experience the ship!!!

We sailed on a b2b on Jewel in March, great ship, we've sailed on all the other classes and loved the connecton with the ocean on this one, our balcony cabin had a flat screen but we didnt watch it except for having it on for some background music when getting ready but it seems to be the same old programming anyway. We especially liked the open air area on the windjammer and the Seaview Cafe which i heard was changing to a pay venue when she goes for revitalisation. Would love to sail on that class again, only downside is that the solarium roof was never open and on the itinerary we were on there was one sea day which was fine as the pool area got VERY crowded.

I hope the refit stays at 2016. We are booked next for Alaska and LA. (Couldn't do a B2B due to the Jones Act)

We have only been on 1 Radiance class and it was just after Serenade was upgraded. I am looking forward to seaview café. They did have the windjammer outdoor seating area, but from what I read on here, seaview is the best.

They still have sports bars on Explorer, Adventure, and Voyager, but no smoking in those anymore.

I was recently on this ship and it is excellent condition.

The only negative thing I have to say is that someone was smoking an E cig in the Schooner Bar…….I mentioned it to the bartender and he said it was OK to smoke in there which I knew was wrong so I left………….

Most of you got my post wrong, but that doesn't surprise me on these boards! The TV was just an example of what MIGHT be indicative of an older ship. That's it. If the TV's are older tube types I just wondered what else might be old, outdated especially since the ship is scheduled for a refurb in 2016. After reading several recent post the ship appears to be in great shape. We are not rookie cruisers. We cruise 4 times a year two weeks at a time. Rarely on RCCL, mostly on Princess, Regent, and SeaDream. We definitely do not expect perfection and the moderate size ships are our favorites. And we do get out of the room...we take our bicycles (packable/travel bikes) and bike miles at every port (best way to see an island in our opinion), but when we do/choose to spend time in our room we like space and a nice TV. At least once a cruise we stay in the room, order dinner from room service and enjoy a movie...always enjoy that. Recently sailed on the new Royal Princess, never again. Sailed Allure, never again. Just too big, too many people...seem to seperated from the sea. Give me the moderate sized ships, like Jewel, anytime.

You realize that the "smoke" from an e-cig is just water vapor?

If you were on Jewel prior to January of this year, personal vaporizers were not prohibited in those venues. The restrictions went into effect on cruises departing on or after 1/1/14

We were on the Jewel of the Seas October 2012 New England/Canada Cruise. The day(Sunday) we got back to disembarked in Boston was the day that Hurricane Sandy came. We had an adventurous time going to New York that day and the following days. I'm glad you had a great time during that time on the ship. Was it rough seas? I'm sure the captain did his best to avoid unsafe spots.

Anyway, I love the Jewel and the Radiance class ships. I hate to see it taking Seaview Cafe out. It is one of my favorite things about RCCL. So sad to see it go in 2016.

Agreed the cafe was somewhat hidden in plain sight and quickly became our favorite. It was also a great place to grab a bite and watch the stragglers coming back to the ship!
