Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Um, lots of non-smokers gamble too and some avoid the casino altogether because of the smoke. No offense, but you really have no idea how many people will return to the casino if it's smoke free so cruise prices are not necessarily going to rise.

 

Lots of assumptions.....

 

We avoided the casino at night in the past. Last cruise on Splendor they had a non smoking section in the casino. (YAY)

Just got the "official" CCL announcement in my e-mail this a.m. I am sooo happy! And I WILL call Guest Services to report any smokers on any balcony near mine! I always end up getting "smoked out" by a cigar or cigarette smoker next to me.

Ok, so a recurring comment throughout all of these threads has been "so you're whole vacation revolves around smoking - how sad" and yet one after another after another after another posts about how the "can't wait to turn someone in if they smell smoke" -:rolleyes: Never have I ever felt the need to "report" anyone on a vacation no matter how much they annoyed me. I have always believed "live and let live" and "they paid for their vacation too" and simply went about my business and stayed out of theirs.

 

LOL - you must all be those tattle tales that got beat up in grammar school :p

 

This is truly simple. The following planned cruises - 7 day Caribbean on December 14 for 3 in balcony $2500; 7 day Southern in May for 4 $3500+; and was hoping for a 12 day Euro on the Vista in 2016 in 2 balconies for 5 which would have easily been $15000; all not going to happen. My dollars go elsewhere. I don't give a damn if it impacts Carnival's bottom line or not and it is not a "threat" or a "tantrum". It is a simple reality and a sad one as I have been a regular, brand loyal cruiser.

 

I will sail NCL as long as they allow balcony smoking and if/when they change that, I will switch to all inclusives and land tours.

Just received an e-mail from our TA. Starting in October, smoking will no longer be allowed on balconies:). Gratuities will also be raised to $12.00/day/person:(.

 

I would go to my online check in & check to see if they added the no smoking clause in it yet, they have to abide by the contract you signed. If they allowed smoking when you signed it, they have to honor their agreement. I would print off multiple copies and when you are out enjoying your cigarette & the smoking police report it, just hand a copy off to whoever knocks on your door.

It cracks me up that smokers are convinced that non smokers can't really smell cigarette smoke. Uhh, yeah we can. Our senses haven't been damaged by all those toxins.

Things change and for some this is a big issue BUT we are well before final cancellation date !

Certainly they should allow those who booked with early saver program to cancel if they wish.

They do not have to allow you to smoke but I welcome you and anyone else to "insist on your rights".

Good luck. I will enjoy watching like I enjoy the running of those late to the ship down the pier.

I would assume that since those impacted by this change haven't been issued cruise docs yet, their contract will include the updated policy (as shown online http://www.carnival.com/about-carnival/legal-notice/ticket-contract.aspx).

if you have not paid the full fare yet, then your statement is not correct. here is what is at the beginning of the ticket contract

Thats probably why they waited 90 days.

 

I am sure there is a clause somewhere for people that paid in full more than 90 days out.

Actually, after 35 years of teaching in elementary schools, we still try to instill that following rules is a very important fact of life. If a rule is made, there is usually a good reason behind it. (safety) Fire on a balcony cruise ship is dangerous to all. Maybe cigarettes and matches have been flying off balconies, causing potential hazards. (BTW - we also teach students not to "tattle-tale" unless there is a safety issue/bullying involved) If I pay for a non-smoking ship balcony, that is what I will expect to get. On almost every cruise I have been on I have had smokers affecting my ability to enjoy my balcony. As of October, this will no longer be a concern on CCL!:)

Without being able to smoke how am I supposed to cover up the smell of drug vapor (coffee), perfume and the guy who has too many beers and bean burritos out on his balcony next to mine ?

 

I also feel sorry for the poor peanut allergist who is downwind from a disgusting balcony peanut eater.

 

Everything that has an odor or could set off an allergic reaction should be banned from balconies ..... Git er done Carnival

I am one who is happy about the ban, but the whole take take mentality is a little childish dint we think.

Perhaps it's been addressed, ( haven't read through entire thread), but is the $250 fee it??, i.e. if you're willing to pay the cleaning surcharge will Carnival allow you to carry-on with your balcony smoking??...That's actually not that much as long as you're not going to be harassed by Carnival employees or others.

 

Here's the way RCI does it.

 

First offense - Warning (followed up by a letter to your cabin)

Second offense - $250.00 fine

Third offense - Removal from the ship

 

I'm sure Carnival will be somewhat similar.

I have always been respectful of other people when I smoke to make sure not in their face I feel carnival will loose alot of business banning from balcony rooms I would think that a better solution they could come up with making one side of the ship smoking only but people always have to complain about something. I guess I will no longer pay extra for a balcony room

A capitalist corporation has made a policy change at the behest of a vocal majority and after careful study of similar businesses with similar smoking bans. All of your varied arguments are for naught, it does not matter about canned corn or burning wood chips, there is no relevancy whatsoever. People did not want smoking on balconies, they got that policy now. Can't please everyone however and I doubt any single policy has 100% approval from all guests.

 

It is done and final. This is all just post mortem and though you may be objectively correct in some of your statements it will change nothing. The old way is not coming back. Smoke in designated areas on the ship and not in others. It's just that simple. If you feel so strongly that you can not enjoy a vacation with Carnival, do not book one and set yourself up for disappointment. Vote with your wallet. With the cost of cigarettes going up and the number of places you're allowed to smoke going down you might look at this as an opportunity for other actions, but that is again entirely up to you. I used an e-cig for about a year or so when I quit smoking. I stopped using it because I was getting scratchy throat and never could quite figure out what was in the juice.

 

Do I think people would notice others vaping on a balcony? No; practically speaking.

 

Do I think more research needs to be done to determine what is in e-cig liquids and if they are harmful to ingest and if vapor itself is harmful? Yes.

 

Do I believe Carnival is erring on cautions side with the vape policy, yes.

 

Am I offended by that? No. But I can understand why some would be disappointed. Most vaporizer users are doing it as an alternative to smoking...seems odd that they MUST vape in the same area as designated smoking.

 

If conclusive evidence from the FDA shows that vapor is not harmful then I might change my mind.

I totally agree that my opinion is a drop in the ocean but I am still entitled to it. And you can be assured that I will not be booking any more vacations with Carnival, which is a sad state of affairs as we had several planned and were greatly looking forward to them. I do tire of people trying to tell me how to live my life (why don't you just quit?) and feeling righteous in doing so though. I mean honestly, would those same people walk up to an obese person and say "why don't you just diet?" I think not and yet they feel completely entitled to tell me how I should live.

 

I also tend to disagree with you "majority" statement. This was a small group of rabid individuals that could be found on these boards on any given day dedicated to letter writing campaigns and internet posts as if this were their only reason for existence. Many non-smokers could not care less. Smokers have been conditioned to simply accept the every increasing hand of big brother and tend to quietly move on. There has been talk of a poll or questionnaire Carnival supposedly sent out yet no one opposed to this new ban had even heard of it. Of the 20+ people we just sailed with in May, no one was polled. As a family of 6 regular Carnival cruisers, not one of us received a poll or email. I would be interested to know exactly what people they sampled.

 

Like a lot of things happening right now in or society - it is the one who makes the most noise that gets gratification. We will see how this affects CCL. It might, it might not. There really is not a direct comparison to RCL as their demographic is very different.

 

I have already had to change my short term and long term plans for vacationing, which is sad because I genuinely enjoyed Carnival and cruising in general, but I am certain the zealots have their sites set on NCL next. I will return to land based vacations but will certainly miss the sea. And I am sure there are many like me. And for what? So someone doesn't sniff a bad smell for 1.2 seconds which apparently ruins their entire cruise experience?

 

It really is sad that others feel so justified in imposing their will on others. It kind of makes you wonder where it will end? Because rest assured, this is just the beginning.

Yes, I have and I can tell you it is not at all the same thing.

Again, I am a non smoker but obviously one of the less dramatic. Look, I don't like smoking. As a child I got to ride in a car from Texas to Kansas and back with my smoking parents and grandparents - that is truly awful. But never once has someone smoking on a balcony affected me ever.

 

 

Did you ever sit in the back seat of a car with the windows down and someone in the front seat smoking? Same thing. At 20 knots he smoke will be in the next balcony.
