What have you seen from your balcony?

We saw some men being rescued from a small boat that had capsized not far from San Juan.

We saw three men being rescued from a small capsized boat after our ship, the Independence, left San Juan. One man did not have a life vest and was clinging onto the side of the little boat. The rescue was amazing! Maybe we were on the same cruise?

Whales, flying fish, goats, seals, migrants, other ships, sunrises, sunsets, a bale of weed, mountains, a police chase, pier runners, glaciers, bears, pilot boats, thunder/lightning storms, stars....the list goes on and on. I've seen a lot of interesting things while sitting on my balconies.

 

Ditto to what they said................I was going to post these same things and found out you did it for me :)

In the souther Caribbean the ship followed a commercial fishing boat long line for it seemed miles and miles. It was the first time I have seen it in person, and as a old fisherman, I do not care for this type of fishing, it can take everything that swims by, not just the legally marketable fish in the US.

I also wondered how Cruise ships actually avoid cutting the lines if traveling in a different direction. I wanted to ask the Captain at his Q&A session, but could not get a question is side ways for the usual questions.

 

PS I love watching Thunderstorms any where and a cruise ship is a great and probably a safe place.

Small foreign submarine which followed us a long way on the way to Norway

 

Huge military presence including serious guns and fighter planes at Naval Submarine base in New London Ct

We always book a balcony or junior suite. We love spending time out on the balcony.

 

Some of our favorites spotting are whales, seals, fish flying and the birds flying all over. We also enjoy our fellow cruisers running to catch the ship (sometimes successful, sometimes not). We try to get up early on port day to see us sailing into port on our private balcony! In the Caribbean, we like to see all the ships heading back on the last night of our cruise. It looks like a parade. On embarkation day, we like to sit on our balcony and watch the crew bringing on our necessities for the trip and also our fellow cruisers hoping aboard. My husband is always looking for Navy and Coast Guard vessels.

 

That's why we love our balcony!

Saw a boat full of people refugees that our ship sent a boat out to them. they refused help probably knowing that if we took them onboard the coast guard would take them back to their country. pilot boats, coast guard boats, police boats with guns mounted. snow covered mountains in alaska. runners are the most fun. pulling into port inthe morning is the best and sunsets from the balcony are so beautiful.

We have seen flying fish, Mahi Mahi chasing those flying fish, turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales and even a small craft over turned in the Pacific two and half days out of Hawaii. Guess I did not mention the hundred or more stingrays while the anchor being dropped in Cabo.

We always bring our bino's. That way you will get to see a little more from the balcony that others may not see.

!. Last April as we sailed away from Granada, I witnessed the most stunning rainbow show I have ever seem in my life. There were multiple rainbows and the colors were so sharp. One rainbow even worked its misty way up to the edge of our balcony. I'll never forget that sight.

 

2. One night after midnight a flock of white birds flew along side our ship for hours. They were almost ghostly. They were so close to our balcony, we could almost touch them.

 

3. One afternoon at Labadee I watched a jet ski tour stop in the waters near our ship whie the guide talked. Just then a guy on one of the jet skis spun his jet ski in a wild circle and his lady companion flew off the rear of the jet ski and into the water. The tour guide blew his top and was yelling. Luckily the woman managed to get back up on the jet ski unharmed.

 

4. From my balcony I have watched numerous unfortunate crew or passengers being unloaded from the ship and onto ambulances at various ports of call. At Fort Lauderdale, we hadn't even left port when police officers escorted a man from the ship in handcuffs.

 

5. Nights in the Southern and Eastern Caribbean are amazing as our ship passes many sparkling jeweled islands with their lights. They are so beautiful, it makes a special and memorable part of these itineraries.

 

6. One night I went out on my balcony just as a shooting star shot right past the edge of our railing. It was both surprising and amazing.

Not off our balcony, but last year in the Carnival Breeze MDR we were near the windows and saw two water spouts form and come out of the clouds into the sea. A spectacular sight but frightening at the same time. The water spouts seemed to be close behind the ship and half the people in the dining room left their meals to go to the windows to see the sight.

In Jan. 2003 on the Adventure the day after leaving San Juan our ship was buzzed by a coat guard jet. I didn't recognize the markings and my dh thought I dreamed it until later in the week we saw the US fleet, aircraft carriers practicing takeoffs and landings. A neighbor asked if we saw the coast guard plane earlier in the week! Btw whem I say buzzed the ship I mean we are on deck 8 and it was on that level!

 

Of course we've seen the runners, beautiful sunsets, glaciers, etc., but no naked people!

Not sure what a water spout is. Love the photos, but that rainbow one...my, my, my, spectacular!!!

 

A water spout is a tornado over water. Not something I would stand by a window to watch.

We went on a whale watch on Maui only to return to find that my Dad had been watching the whales from their balcony, right next to ours. I know it may not appeal to everyone but I've seen some amazing thunderstorms with lightning. We've seen sea lions on the dock and we love watching the "running of the drunks" from our balcony when the ship is getting ready to pull out and late arriving guests make a mad dash. We saw the lava from the balcony as we were leaving Hawaii, flowing into the water and the steam rising. THAT was amazing. It was dark and our video is a little shaky but it's unbelievable and we were in awe.

when we were in Auckland I got quite a fright when I opened our curtains to see a man standing on his balcony next to the boat. He was so close we sat and had a conversation. We could have shared our breakfast. Also when we were on our first cruise we had spent a few days out at sea then we had a port day it amazed us that we had not seen any fly's or birds for days and had not noticed until we saw them again. DH loves to watch the pilots pull up and hop on the boat while I like to stay on the balcony and watch us pull into port
