Sorry Muffin Posted September 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2014 I have been checking on cruise that include Barbados, when I noticed something. Week long cruise that has a port of call everyday, and no free days at sea. I was wondering if anyone has been on a cruise like that? Since I mainly go to see the ports, maybe this is something I should try. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy my days at sea, but if this is a way to save money, I may try one Mary Louise

Pretty port intensive, and many of the excursions in those ports were all day ones, due to the distance to the actual city from the port area. We were glad to have our TransAtlantic B2B with this one to regroup on all the sea days. Edited September 9, 2014 by Shmoo here
Loving My Life Posted September 9, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2014 I cruise more for the ports than the sea days/ship. My Southern Caribbean cruise had 6 ports in 7 days (1 sea day) and it was fabulous. My upcoming Mediterranean cruise has 10 ports in 12 days. I'm sure it will be amazing! I'm not sure what you mean by saving money though.

I don't understand how you save money with more ports ?????? I always spend more on a port day ( tours, meals , transport , purchases , etc. ) than I would onboard ? hallasm Posted September 9, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 9, 2014 For my first cruise I couldn't get ports enough - so I booked a 7 night cruise with a port of call every day - I did find it a bit too hectic - so all other cruises have been with 2 or more sea days. Time to relax as well!
boogs Posted September 9, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2014 (edited) Our favorite cruise was a 14 night from Valparaiso, Chile to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida by way of the Panama Canal. It was an almost perfect schedule of a port day, a sea day, another port day, another sea day, etc. That meant a busy early rise port day followed by a lazy sleep in sea day to recover. It was this way for almost the entire cruise. That was nice! :D Edited September 9, 2014 by boogs

Dayenu Posted September 9, 2014 #10 Share Posted September 9, 2014 I think of sea days as "lost vacation days". I'd enjoy a cruise with all days at ports. Don't think I was on a cruise like this, but if I find one, I will definitely go.
cb at sea Posted September 10, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) You don't HAVE to get off the ship at every port! Make your own "sea days"! Hubby hates sea days...he'd love a cruise like that! Edited September 10, 2014 by cb at sea

Otherwise, you might as well take a train or bus to the next destination. :D

DonnaK Posted September 10, 2014 #15 Share Posted September 10, 2014 We've done two 7 day cruises that only had 1 sea day (southern Caribbean, and Canada/NE). Both were exhausting! And expensive, because we definitely spend a lot more in port than we do onboard. You know how people who spend a week at Disney complain that they need a vacation to recover from their vacation? Well, that's how we felt at the end of these cruises! Not enough downtime to relax and decompress.
Rare geoherb Posted September 10, 2014 #16 Share Posted September 10, 2014 I like sea days, but I also enjoy days in ports when we've been to them before--and can stay on the ship with more than half our fellow passengers gone. When we took our first 7-day southern Caribbean cruise from San Juan, I thought going to a port each day was too much for me. That's before we had been to any of the ports and still wanted to do something every day.
sail7seas Posted September 10, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 10, 2014 We have done b-to-b 7 day cruises (totaling 14 days) sailing Boston to Montreal to Boston for years. Each segment has 6 ports in 7 days with only one sea day per week. That is the closest we ever came to a port every day.

wacruiser77 Posted September 10, 2014 #19 Share Posted September 10, 2014 I won't book a cruise unless it has at least 1/3 sea days. Too many ports, too much money, too tired!

Try doing as you suggest in French Polynesia. Dumb example. Most cruises that go to your example port have multiple sea days in their itinerary. Next time, at least make an effort to use a better example when you are making a sarcastic criticism of another member's humorous comment. Edited September 10, 2014 by fortinweb
KBS1607 Posted September 10, 2014 #22 Share Posted September 10, 2014 I'm a little worried about the 8 sea days on our upcoming Panama Canal cruise. I've never done one with that many. New experience that I'm looking forward to. It's our 30th anniversary and our honeymoon was a cruise. Kim

It's very appealing to me too and I plan to book it sometime soon. I haven't seen an itinerary quite like that one; the one that comes closest is the Carnival Valor (soon to be replaced by the Liberty) that has one sea day out of seven. I've been on that one twice. It's exhilirating, yes, but in the best way. I can stay at home and relax, and I can do all the relaxing I could ever want when I'm 6 feet under. I don't think it's primarily a way to save money, but it IS possible to spend less money in port vs. at sea: * The souvenir prices may be lower in port * Drink prices may be lower in port * The port may not have a casino, and the ship's casino will be closed while in port I hope to see you around. ksqueak Posted September 10, 2014 #24 Share Posted September 10, 2014 I did a 14 day cruise that had 7 ports back to back in the middle. By port number 5 or 6 I was so tired of sightseeing I would have loved a sea day. My attitude has become never again, need a break to appreciate what I'm seeing. If I felt overwhelmed one day I would just simply make my own "port sea day". Happy sailing
