With Delta can you take a garment bag as a carry-on instead of a suitcase?

Yes you easily can...

Just a pet peeve...I fly DL often...and sorry to say I wish they were more stringent with how much/size/weight that some of the traveler's carryon..it's at times crazy what some get away with.

As long as it conforms to the dimensions listed for a carryon with DL. The dimensions are NOT just for a suitcase, but for everything anyone would want to carry on the plane.

(on soapbox)If your garment bag doesn't meet those requirements, and you persist in trying to carry it on, you are just contributing to the problem. No one is entitled to flaunt the rules. (off soapbox)

Yes, as long as the dimensions confirm to the carry-on size.

i.e. Be prepared to fold it/roll it to meet those dimensions. Also, unless you are flying first, there's no where to hang it, and the only way to lay it out flat in an overhead bin is to wait til the bin is full, and hope there is room on top of the other bags to fit it in flat. I saw someone board once with a garment bag, and they tried to lay it flat in the overhead and then keep others from putting bags on top of it. Needless to say, that did not happen.
