1st free upgrade-Thanks RCI

Recommended Posts

We returned from Radiance, Christmas and New Years cruise, yesterday.

All of our current and future cruises are JS, but we thought this one was too expensive, so only booked a balcony.

We did not know until we checked in, and were given a silver sea pass card, and the cabin number was not what we booked. We had to ask a GS what our new cabin was. :D

Thanks upgrade fairy.:D

Our 2nd cruise with RCI was a free upgrade to a GS....had no warning.

Cruise was Sunday, Friday night, before flying out sataurday morning, I checked "My Cruises" on the website one last time, and noticed we had a balance due of about $45....

Looked further and we were assigned a GS...paid that $45 as fast as I could!

Not sure, but I believe the $45 was additional tax....

We are now D+, and have never had an upgrade since. We have though, stayed in a GS every cruise since.

A Hotel Director on a cruise, after telling him our story, smiled and said "There is a method behind their upgrades, they do know what they're doing"

Maybe the $45 was additional prepaid gratuities?

That was my thinking as well, I assume they would have had the passengers pay this at the pier or onboard? I don't think I've ever checked after printing the set sail pass, usually a week ahead. Maybe this time I will as I'm almost diamond and the cruise doesn't seem to be filling up very fast compared to past cruises. I don't expect any price drops as we got one of the very early BOGOHOs when it was a good deal.

Woohoo. It's a good feeling, isn't it!

They're so clever at it too- the first time they upgraded us from Ocean View to Balcony... We haven't looked back!!!

Always in balcony rooms now, or JS if we can afford it.

We have been upgraded 3 times. The first was from oceanview to balcony on a B2B Panama Canal cruise, the next was from a JS to a GS, then years later from a JS to the OS. My, it was hard to go back to just a balcony!

Fingers and toes crossed for a first one in May. Booked an inside because it was cheaper than dirt for 10 days to Hawaii! Hoping we arrive at the pier and get a nice anniversary surprise to a balcony...any balcony!!!!!!!

You reading this RCCL????? LOL:D

I upgraded our booking for a trip last September, paid the difference and so on.

In November booked a last minute PR on Navigator 12/7 sailing at an excellent rate ( under $400pp). The next day I got an email offering balcony upgrades. I called and I could have the pick of any available balcony for an extra $120pp. I took it:) Got a D2.

I wonder if the offer came because I'd paid for an upgrade before?

Ours was 10 day to Hawaii $629pp!, if they offered that upgrade, we would snap it up too, keeping my eyes peeled for reduced balcony rate but so far, almost three times more!!

Guess we'll be spending a lot of time up on deck!

Hawaii was the one upgraded last Sept, There was a reduction a few weeks prior but it wasn't cheap. Just decided it was worth it and glad we did!

10 cruises and I have probably spent $50 total in the casino, that must be why I've never been upgraded.

Done! :)

To others that are reading this, Crown & Anchor announced a while back that they would only issue upgrades to people that had their upgrade preferences set on the website.

Also, the website preferences only affect Crown & Anchor upgrades. The Revenue Dept. does upgrades before Crown & Anchor and they don't use your upgrade preferences. They use some other criteria with the goal of maximizing revenue.

Ok, so the upgrade preference is nice. Didn't know about that.

Question, so the cruise I am going on in a few weeks is an incentive trip that I earned. My roommate is a friend and not a family member. If an upgrade were available, would we both have to have the upgrade option checked on our profile? I am also a Silver member and she is not.

Bob, can you clarify what you mean? What's the difference between C&A upgrades and regular upgrades? Thanks!

I believe they would look at preferences of the "primary" person on the booking, which is the first person listed on the booking.

The Revenue Dept. does their upgrades before C&A. Anything left over then goes to C&A to do their upgrades.
