S1 or CS on Eclipse?

Looking for your opinions. :)

I'm trying to decide between a S1 (aft corner sky suite) or a Celebrity Suite on the Eclipse. I know the CS is larger, but I really like that aft balcony... And I don't really like the bumped out balcony for the CS. Anyone stay in both and have a preference? Maybe some good pics?

We much prefer the S1 for it's open lay out and the terrific balcony. We were in 8345 for the 2013-2014 New Year's cruise. We liked this cabin enough that we booked it again for the 2014-2015 combined Christmas and New Year's cruise.

We have toured the CS but stayed in one. Our butler showed us one during the 2013-2014 cruise. We toured one again during the cabin crawl this year. Yes, the CS is bigger but the bedroom made us feel boxed in.

The S1's also have plentiful storage, more storage space than we could use. We didn't fill of the storage cabinet space on either cruise and Madam does not travel light. Think two semi's to haul her luggage to the cruise. We do bring eight heavy duty magnetic hooks and a multi-pocketed over the bathroom door shoe storage thing but really didn't need the additional storage. We used the magnetic hooks for things we wanted to grab in a hurry when leaving the cabin.

We are booked on the October TA cruise aboard the Silhouette. We thought about booking a CS but decided to once again book the S1. You guessed it - we have that same S1 relatively speaking but aboard the Silhouette. We simply liked the S1 enough better that we booked it instead of the CS.

I do have pictures around somewhere. When I locate them I'll post them here so you can see 8345. In the meantime enjoy that next cruise.

Overall, the view on an S1 on an S-class is a great view, and an nice balcony, with a nice table great for breakfast as you come into port.

The bathrooms are similar.

The S1 has more open space / feel, but overall less room.

A separate bedroom is a feature we like.

The extra perks and service you'd receive from having access to Michael's club are pretty substantial, but how you value these special services are really personal.

It may come down to price and where you're sailing, and for how long, at least that is what would matter to me.

Happy sailing,

Jenna

I'm so excited to see your post because we will be sailing in sky suite 8345, leaving in five days, on the Equinox. I'm glad to hear that you found the storage space to be adequate and that you liked that particular cabin so much that you booked it a second time. PLEASE POST YOUR PICTURES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Thanks!

We prefer the CS over the S1....for us it's all about the space and now with the added perks for suites at CS and above it's an easy decision.

The bedroom IS small in a CS but it's still a private room, enabling an early riser to enjoy the rest of the stateroom and not disturb someone still asleep in the bedroom. We also like the idea of the separate entrances to the bathroom from the bedroom and living area. All in all the CS wins for us on all counts...

But am sure you will enjoy your cruise whatever you choose!!!:)

We have formed opinions about which cabins we preferred before staying in them, based on tours and our perceived value of different features. After staying in the various cabins, our opinions of those perceptions and hence our opinions have changed. It's very different to stay in a cabin, vs tour it.

Happy sailing,

We did not like the CS as the bedroom was cramped and dungeon like...some like this...I was with my mother and with the beds separated one is directly under the wall lamp and actually kind if dangerous if you pop up for any reason...we went back to S1 and love the bright and open space! You will get so many conflicting answers to your question...for us Michaels club means nothing as it is empty most times and with 123 have the drinks package is included...again MANY people will debate this (for those people: no need to bother, I have already recognized you have a different opinion)

We love the spaciousness of the S1 too. We have toured the other cabins as well. We decided to try the CS after reading a thread about people sort of liking the CS angled balcony over the RS. I would have never considered this before. In addition I spoke to someone over the moon about her CS who like us, often stayed in SS.

I agree to tour that category, it seems a little cramped and the furniture looks comfortable but oversize for the space. Maybe that is the point, not sure.

I love listening to the ocean in the morning and it seems that will not happen while in bed in that category.

  • 1 month later...

Interesting debate about the differences between SS and CS. We are just off the March 1st Eclipse sailing and have booked an SS for next the same sailing next April. We did not tour this category while on board but were told that all of the SS are at the stern on each corner. We did look at the suite we booked from the dock in Antiqua and it appears that the veranda wraps around a little which would make the size considerably larger than the a Concierge Class balcony?

For us the access to Michael's is not relevant or worth the extra cost. As someone else said, it looked empty most of times we walked by on our way to the Ensemble Lounge and we prefer not to feel we have to use a particular amenity because we paid for it. Being on the ship to us is about freedom to decide on the spur of the moment where we will drink or eat. Heck, our lives are so structured when we are on land, having the opportunity to be spontaneous is what a vacation is all about.

We are looking forward to another glorious 14 days on Eclipse on the April 3, 2016 sailing.

The S1s are on the back corners (except for Relfection where there are S1s in other places). S2s which are also Sky Suites are located in various locations.

The balcony will be much better than a Concierge Class balcony, it will wrap around and in addition to the sliding door / window will have a LARGE port hole window next to the sofa. These are from Eclipse:

Thanks for sharing your pictures. No poles in your suite? I thought all the S1s had them.

I'm thinking the S1 on the lowest level(s) don't have the poles, that they appear on the higher decks.

If you look at the aft of the ships, they stair-step back, so I would expect the poles to go from top of ship to bottom of ship straight down, thus the reason they are in varying positions in these cabins.

Have I also read somewhere that there is a set of them that has 2 poles?

It's there, in the pic of the bed, hidden by the edge of the drapery and the window.

The suite was 9299

To the OP, you mention you aren't concerned about Michael's Club.

I used to think similarly until my last 2 cruses with access.

Besides the social aspect (it gets busy at dinner times just like all the other bars do, and is as empty as Martini bar mid day), there are just so many little things they do to provide service.

They actually walk you off the ship, and am hearing now that they take you straight to the customs officer, no more queuing on disembarkation. Speaking of which, if you like a late disembarkation, the club lounge is a great place to wait out till the bitter end to leave, enjoying espressos and mimosas as you do. And when it's time to leave, concierge jumps you to the front of the line to get off, no line or waiting.

If you have a tender port, they gather you all up in Michaels club then (on s class ships) take you thru a "secret door" in the club that leads straight to the stairs and off to the tenders. Absolutely the first people off ship, perhaps even ahead of X operated tours. But I know we left prior to tender announcements.

Club concierge will email you ahead of cruise to see what they can do to have things all in order for you, a simple way to organize dinners, excursions etc. Just email them, they will tend to it, no need to mess with website frustration.

Each evening they have some sort of special entertainment, and will host a gathering on a formal night that includes the ship's officers, captain included. Photographer will be taking pictures. I received a photo complimentary from the concierge taken in the club. On 1 cruise, I had 2 friends with me and she even sent the photo to all 3 of us, not just to me.

Zero wait to get a drink, unlike martini bar at the crush before dinner. Besides being complimentary, they will stocks the bar with your preferred brad, top shelf or whatever, regardless of drink package level or absence of one.

Have some travel plans you want to change, need quick internet access, the concierge in the club will tend to your details or assist (changing flights, printing boarding passes - that sort of thing).

All this said, on S class I do feel like the Celebrity Suite is a bit cramped, and the sky suite feels more roomier, (never stayed in one, but have visited a few along the way) but I do like to have a separate sleeping area from living space, but I'm one of those who likes sleeping in a total dark cave with no windows or ability to determine what time of day it is.

Another benefit, is the CS are centrally located elevators up or down to whatever you want to do, Aft cabins, always the walk back and forth from the elevators.

All this said, if budget isn't really the consideration, I'd take a Celebrity Suite.

I have a question about the S1 Aft Corner Suite Sizes: the deck plans seem to show that the suites on decks 10-12 (1198, 1403, 1663, 1666, 2146, 2151) are much larger than those on 6-9 (6304, 6305, 7307, 7356, 8336, 8345, 9299, 9374). Is that correct?

I have only personal been in the suites on deck 9 (both sides, different ships) but I have spent CONSIDERABLE time counting carpet circles (assuming the same carpet, had the same size design and the design was consistent) in lots of pictures to see if the widths were different. It shows some are wider and others are longer and narrower. Some have sofas in different configurations, and chairs in different places. Obviously these can be moved.

What I was told and as far as I could tell, they were all the same width and length, or if not the difference was pretty negligible.

The ONLY exception that I am aware of is the deck 6 balcony on Reflection which is MUCH smaller and should be avoided.

There are a few other decks I would avoid. I would avoid deck 10 on all but Reflection because of the window washing equipment. Deck 11 would be my first choice, then deck 9 (except Reflection).

Happy sailing,

Jenna

I like the S1 size a lot.

Now about being walked off and escorted through customs, I recall cueing up with everyone else, maybe that is only for PH? Not RS. Or it began after Christmas 2014. Or inconsistent.

It depends on the MC concierge I guess. We had it on Summit and mostly on Millenium, but did ask once since we had had it already.

Carefully, people will think that some of us [i am including myself in this] are just far to obsessive about cruising!

We are just back having done a week on Reflection in an AS and 2 weeks on the Eclipse in a CS.

We found the AS,which will soon be an S1, better laid out than the CS. The bedroom and closet are difficult to work your way around and there is a silly very thin cupboard in the bedroom that opens the wrong way and blocks out any light. Cannot see what is in it unless you open bathroom door.

In the AS there was a bank of 4 wardrobes with plenty of light and space around it.

While we thoroughly enjoyed being back in Michael's, we don't think that it justifies the extra £2000 or so just to get access there.

We have a couple of RSs booked over the next 18 months but most of our future cruises have been switched to S1 aft cabins (pole doesn't worry me as I am on other side of bed)

We have stayed in both on the Eclipse. S1 1666 and CS 1233, the angled hump one. Our preference is the CS, mainly because of that huge balcony. I am trying to post the pictures. I have to upload the CS first.

Let's see if this worked. Probably not, but I'm trying.
