Liberty engine issue

Wow. Unfortunately, the reliability of software programming is not what it used to be. I see it every day.

Most times it works just fine. I remember back to the old electro-pneumatic engine controls, and one piece of rust in the air system could shut you down. What I really cringe over is having that young kid come out with a flash drive to install the "latest and greatest" update and not knowing what it actually does, and how it does it. I love PLC's because I can access their logic ladders and actually see the system working real time.

Actually, for our Easter cruise, If they just want to push the Liberty out to about 50 miles off the coast and drop the anchor right there... As long as they keep bringing me my drinks, I'll be OK with that. Oh and a little bit of OBC would get me a few Johnnie Walker Blue.

Not to mention that PLCs are generally highly reliable.

Wow, I'm quite impressed with the technical knowledge posted on this board! When I read it all and my simple brain translated it, the output = Liberty is broken. :o

I'm sorry for anyone whose cruise is in jeopardy. I've only had one cancelled and that was when Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. We were scheduled on Carnival (can't remember the ship) out of Mobile (no longer a cruise port) and Carnival cancelled the cruise in order to provide emergency housing for those displaced from the hurricane. We got no compensation at all, but it was kind of hard to complain given the circumstances (although you may have to live in a hurricane-prone area to appreciate it).

Were you not even reimbursed what you paid for the cruise? Or do you just mean you received nothing over and above that?

Oh Boy.... Not what I wanted to hear as I finish packing my suitcase.. We re leaving _well, maybe_ on Liberty of the Seas tomorrow.......

I'm sorry you all missed your ports...I hope it's still enjoyable for you..

It's -6 here in the Buffalo Area... I'll even be happy with sitting on the deck of a limping ship at this point.... :(

Yup, -5 in Chicago this morning, and we are supposed to sail on March 9. Would you be kind enough to keep us posted on what you learn of your cruise. I have a call in to the travel agent. Good luck.

Our cruise is really sold out? Wow! Will be my first full cruise :D I am just praying to at least just bob around the Caribbean. Who cares of we stop anywhere!

The cruise lines do 4-day cruises to nowhere. Wonder if this will be one of them. It beats the -5 degrees that I woke up to this morning.;)

Saw this pop up yesterday, but was travelling, and couldn't respond till now.

hales1284: While you are quite correct that a fixipod is less of an issue than an azipod, even if one azipod is down, they may not send her for docking right away, even if they could schedule the dock (the Freeport docks are usually booked solid nearly a year in advance). Loss of one azipod is no different in terms of speed than a fixipod, but because one of the redundant steering methods is out of commission, it will generally require tugs for docking, and the USCG will require a tug escort from the sea buoy to the dock in case of failure of the remaining steering (azipod).

From what I see, the 4 night to Cozumel is likely doable, maybe loss of an hour in port, as is the 5 night Cozumel and Belize. The Labadee and Ocho Rios 5 night might require a bit more rescheduling, or a change in routing.

Right the loss of one azipod in terms of speed loss is similar to the fixipod however it becomes a safety issue considering a primary steering method is down. Hopefully this is not the case so the folks scheduled on her next voyage can enjoy their cruise. Otherwise Liberty will be headed to dry dock for emergency repairs.

See above posts about the generator problems.

Though even loss of one azipod would not require immediate drydocking. That would all depend on the class society and flag state. Some ships have operated quite a while (I remember the NCL Star in Hawaii back in 2004) on one azipod. At sea, it is totally up to the flag state and class whether the ship is considered to be "safe to navigate" with one pod (generally, each pod has two hydraulic pumps to rotate it, so that becomes two means of steering). Once the ship enters territorial waters of a country, it is up to that country to decide whether or not the ship is safe to continue in their waters. Generally, even the USCG only requires a notification when a ship enters US waters with one steering down. When the ship enters restricted waters (entering/leaving port), it then falls again on the port state to decide how the ship proceeds. The USCG will normally require a tug to escort the ship from the sea buoy to the dock, and back to the sea buoy as a standby method of steering. The Star went a few months with only one azipod, and Carnival has had ships escorted all the way down the Miss River due to a pod failure.

You might not be to thrilled on it being sold out, that is a lot of people on board and a lot of lines to stand on. I didn't realize it was spring break, I wouldn't of book it for that week. We were on a cruise during spring break at it was crazy with the college kids, don't think you will ever get a spot at the pool. And all the bars at night are packed. But I have a balcony to sit and relax and just enjoy. I know I will still love it, you make your own fun. So lets hope that we can still enjoy and not be disappointed.

Omg how long freedom was running like that?

We were on Freedom in July 2012, and they had divers down at every port fixing something with the propulsion systems (not sure whether it was what ultimately broke) but definitely something that was affecting performance.

Is Cody 13-15 with dirty blond surfer style hair? Skinny too? HA, I wish I stilled looked like that. If he is who I think he is, we sailed with him in November, and he won the BOB. Haven't met Pezz, but with our love of the Oasis Class I am sure we will one day.

In November, the Cody that I met, was first time flowriding and maybe first cruise too. We were on Oasis and he rode more like a stake boarder. Really lose and used his hands on the surface of the water help. Very much like the movie "The Legends of Dogtown".

Good luck with Cats. We made it intermission and my wife said we could go. Really well done, and we felt bad leaving but we were spent after a long day.

This Cody is 19 from Vermont. He is similar style to what you describe. I think he rides motor cross dirt bikes and is very very good on the board. His third cruise.

I'll have my daughter and her friend with me, both on college spring break. I expect total craziness, but I'm sure they'll have a blast. My Kindle will be ready to go. I plan on spending time in the solarium and my balcony. I'm sure I'll have fun, it will just be a different cruise than the one I'll be taking in September.

Crowded ship vs. staying home and working out in the cold???

We haven't gotten anymore info .. All I know is that appears the ship is going a little faster .. But still slower then normal . We have been assured that we will make it to Fort Lauderdale in time , if not a little early . There is a very long line at guest services where people are asking a lot of questions about future sailing etc as there are back to backers on the ship . People are also complaining about the credit etc .. I am happy with the $250 and won't be complaining . I heard the captain talking to someone and he mentioned 10 knots and something about the engine problem causing a tilt ? The captain has been very available to people's questions ..

Jules we are on the same sailing. I think the college kid craziness will actually be entertaining to watch. (As long as they don't wake me up in the middle of the night). I like lounging by the pool with my kindle and people watching. I also have a balcony assuming we get to sail somewhere. I would be ok with even nearby Nassau.

Any news yet? My niece is on the cruise that is supposed to leave tomorrow and she said that all of her friends are freaking out right now! They're worried the cruise will be cancelled.

I really doubt the cruise will be cancelled. It may be shortened, or it may have an itinerary change, but I doubt it will be cancelled.
